Although I just saw him yesterday on CNN, I thought he was getting his own show on TVOne anyway. I guess he would have kept both.

the fuck? he shouldn't be apologizing for those tweets. from the looks of this thread, he should be apologize for a lot of other things he said, though.
Yup. Were it not for his previous statements, I'd be saying this is much ado about nothing. But it appears to be a continuation of bad sentiments...

well i must be homophoibic too because im struggling to see what's wrong with those tweets.

some of those other comments? a little more sketchy.

I was strongly suggesting that poster buy a thicker skin :) you too.

I have a thick skin. I've had to deal with this bullshit for years. I've been called faggot, pussy, weak, etc for years. I've dealt with that and more with a "thick skin"

I have a zero tolerance policy for any disrespect coming from a homophobic place.

Fuck anyone that uses this as humor and thinks it's ok. I'm happy that this is now punished as the hateful speech it is. When you tolerate, or support, or defend this, you are fueling the atmosphere that teen suicide comes from.

I don't understand why people feel the need to share their private thoughts that might get them in trouble on various social networks, where everyone can see them. You're not talking to just your friends anymore, you're sharing this with the whole world (unless it's G+ and you share it just with people in the circle ;).

I agree with this, although I don't think I would have been NEARLY as upset if he hadn't used the "homosexual lifestyle" phrase earlier.

No, genius, you don't tell people that are offended by bigotry to "grow a thicker skin". You tell bigots to grow up and learn how to use their brains.

Initially I didn't find the tweets to be homophobic which is why i said grow a thicker skin, but after reading the other things he said I do agree he's bigoted.

I don't understand how people can say the tweets are not homophobic.

Who would one expect to be excited by an ad with David Beckham in his underwear? Women and gay men. He said any dude (not person) excited about that ad should get slapped. Thus, anyone acting "gay" over that ad should get slapped. Not that hard to figure out.

There's only so much Backham a man can take..
I'm seeing this several times a day atm:

Feels bad :(

That H and M ad was pretty strange though
Were they targeting woman to go buy Beckham underwear for their spouses/sig. others?

It's pretty damn hard to defend this guy. Even if you argue this is the PC police throwing a fit...the guy has a long history of far worse statements; this is just an appetizer of his bullshit. Perhaps I could give some dudebro a pass for something like this, but there's too much history here

His "apology" wasn't really an apology either. Rampant homophobia within the black community and especially the black church is nothing new and needs to be addressed

He shouldn't have said it and his punishment seems appropriate. I wouldn't flip out and march down to the Courthouse demanding justice be done. Pick your battles and save the fights for issues that really matter. So I hope everyone doesn't lose scope of the story and blow it out of proportion.

I think it's homophobic to imply that a man who wears a pink suit is gay.

That would imply the person who said it is homophobic. Of course Martin could well be homophobic, and I'm not saying you should say those things, but when I have heard similar things said, it is usually more an attack on a person's masculinity or lack of. It would be like calling a man 'a big girl'. It is more about behaviour or traits that you would usually associate with femininity.

It doesn't necessarily mean the person is really that concerned about it either. It could be just used as a form of banter.

Is Don Lemon gay??

Yes, and he came out publicly as such

It does no such thing. A comment can be homophobic whether or not the person means it that way or is simply ignorant.

so they're an effemiphobe?

saying a man shouldn't wear pink is homophobic?

Okay, let's work this through. What reason would a person have to suggest that men should be mocked for wearing pink?

When you're doing so because it's something "girly" considering the history of considering gay men effeminate? Yes. I can see why the connection might not be obvious to a person at first blush but it does speak to the same attitude that contributes to that. Although I have to say in fairness I wouldn't assume if that was ALL a person did that they were homophobic.

I think the most generous defense one can offer for such a position is that they are strong believers in traditional male gender roles. Which isn't necessarily homophobic -- although it often is -- but even if on its own, it's not a good thing. I am also rather disgusted by the "men should be real men" line of thinking, although not to the same degree as I am disgusted by homophobia.

Also, on Al Sharpton - I obviously have some issues with him on some policies but he's always seemed to be a THOROUGHLY decent and dedicated man.

Seriously? The guy likes sports. He's spouting off during the biggest annual sporting event in america, who cares? I see nothing wrong with what he said.

"Manhood" and "man cards" have nothing to do with being gay, and I take his comments as poking fun at that rather than the sexuality of anyone. I agree with him in his questioning of men that don't like sports. I find those people weird. I don't care who they are fucking.

I suppose so. I think the term has always been wrong to be honest.

by definition

irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals

Sometimes the words people say are subject to interpretation or intention. If we give homophobia a broader term rather than what the word actually suggests -- which would be an irrational fear of -- then yes, I suppose you could call the comment homophobic.

so they're an effemiphobe?

Not necessarily no. Again if used as a form of banter.

Wow, I had no idea. Him and Cooper are two of my favorite newscasters. What's awesome is that miscellaneous anchor women on CNN are always flirting with both of them, too.

Same here. I used to watch Cooper on ABC world news now when I was up in the middle of the night and couldn't sleep. He had a lot of fun in that time slot...

Words acquire a meaning based on the way they are used, not by what their root words historically meant.

I might agree with you if Martin didn't have the history he did.

Keep telling yourself that. You'd be shocked at how common the belief that gay men aren't real men is.

How do you feel about people over 18 who play video games? Borderline pedophiles for playing with children's toys at that age? I mean video games (over 18) are just so weird...
