I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. Not sure what "advances" you expect, but there have been massive software changes/improvements since iOS4, even though it may look superficially similar on the surface. The 4S was a massive tech update and a complete internal redesign although the body stayed the same. The iPhone 5 was a complete rebuild of the phone, from the inside and out, every single component dramatically improved or changed. Yeah it has the same general shape, but that's about it. There's nothing "awkward" about it, it's an extremely clean device with brilliant build quality. It's also insanely light. As for the 4S being better looking..no.
What "major advances" have there been between Galaxy S3>4? What about Galaxy Nexus>Nexus4? At this stage its all about improvement and refinement.
Honestly, the whole Apple Maps fiasco really rubbed me the wrong way. Combine that with a sort of lackluster update in the iPhone 5 made me for the first time really look at the alternative.
Three things off the top of my head that I would like to see in iOS is being able to set a default app, scheduled tasks/updates for apps, and a quicker way to gain access to key toggle settings.
