COD 4 Beta Thread

one question though. i've noticed the whole online interface and workings is very very similar to H3 (a good thing IMO), the lobbys, the partys, the matchup. did they do this on purpose or is it part of some new set of APIs from MS? i jut found it a little odd that it's so close to Halo 3, not that it's a bad thing, as i liked the additional features of partying up and enhanced matchmaking with ranks and all.

i finally got into some less laggy games and i enjoy it. my brother and his wife have played the beta for probably about 17 hours now in 3 days.

I stopped playing, the maps got old fast and im sick of getting shot in the back half the time because the maps are pretty small:(

Overgrown is a really intense map. It has more of a Call of Duty feel than that god awful Vacant map. I swear I hate vacant. Always some asshole running around with nothing but a grenade launcher and others just throwing grenades.

You know, Vacant isn't bad at ALL until you get those jerks running around with a grenade launcher. If you take that out of the equation, you have a really fun map on hands. It's just that too many people spam the crap out of the grenade launcher on that map, making it near impossible to have a good time.

got sick of getting your ass kick already, eh? it's okay, i understand cause i suck at this game as well, but i still like it.

i really like overgrown.
lately i´ve changed from rpg to c4 and it's been more fun, setting the trap and waiting :D

I'm a bit iffy with the respawn. I mean, it's nice to spawn with your teammates, but if they're holed up in a house and getting spammed by snipers and LMGers outside, it's not very fun to spawn, die, and respawn right where you died. Not to mention spawning right where an airstrike is about to land.

I hope there are more maps that are a bit more team-based, in other words, I hate getting shot in the back when originally there was no one there.

Oh, and also the attachments, I think allowing either a silence or a scope is kinda silly. I mean, I will almost always take a scope over a silencer. I think they should just have the silencer reduce range a little more, and reduce damage, and let you use it with a scope. Same with the hand-grip for the LMG

One thing about balance...

In Search and Destroy, when it goes into overtime, it should be a two round overtime. I find that if the teams are closely matched it's generally easier to be attacking than defending. Each time i've seen it go to OT, the attacking team in overtime has won. Its fine normally since each team gets 3 rounds, but OT isn't balanced.
I believe it's whichever team had the most kills from those previous 6 rounds gets to be the attackers for that last tie-breaking round. It's a sort of "sudden death".

Wasn't sure what the final say was on that re: bannage.

Also, IW folks, is this frowned upon?
To officially condone it in any way would probably be career suicide. If nothing else, it'd be disrespectful (of IW) towards MS and all the people who are (and have been) waiting patiently for their turn to get in.

(.....)

Overgrown >>>> Vacant

I definitely feel like Overgrown is the most Call of Duty-like map, and I haven't had a bad game on it. Sure it's possible for an organised team to dominate a team of random people, but that's the nature of the game.

On the subject of Call of Duty maps, I wonder if we'll get remakes of Carantan and St. Mere Eglise in the final game, even if they're not set in France. I love those maps and IW put them in both COD and COD2.

Yeah, I was just with a team of organized people on Overgrown for Search and Destroy, and while we started off rocky we eventually just took them to town. They apparently all play in a clan as well, so that was an extra nice touch. Also, getting 3 knife kills in one game? That=YES.

I'll borrow a bit of Ayn Rand philosophy from Atlas Shrugged, I imagine many of us are familiar with it now.

"Never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine."

By camping, you are demanding that other players make the game fun for you. If everyone was to camp, obviously everyone would sit in their place, kill no one, and nothing would happen until the timer ran out. Camping requires a sacrifice on the part of your victims to willingly go along with your strategy to make it work. This is why people don't like campers, because you contribute nothing while expecting others around you to support you. Essentially, you're a looter.

Ironically this requires the sanction of the victims to work. People wonder why people camp, but it is because they are willing to deal with it. Take away the victims and the campers are left with nothing.

I came to this realization a while ago, and now I only play FFA games since camping is not a realistic tactic to win in those sorts of games.

the first mistake in overgrown is camping in the attic of the farm house. That's a noob haven I get sooo many knife kills there. The second mistake is running across either of the bridges. Always stick to the canal.

I was wondering the same thing. They are way to similar to just be coincidence. I think this is a part of the new API.

If I wanted to spend for an hour talking to a bunch of dudes I didn't know and then getting fucked in the arse I'd go to a gay bar.

COD4 Beta sucks, you shouldn't be able to place C4 at spawns...

I've gunned so many people down in the canal :lol

I try to get out of the canal as quickly as possible because the line of sight there is for shit. There are tons of places to snipe down into the canal. I'd rather haul ass across a bridge, which at least has boxes to crouch behind.

And yeah, the attic in the farmhouse is pig-sticker heaven. I killed three in a row there the other day, all with my knife. One was using the machinegun, one was sniping out the window, and one was sniping out the hole in the side. Stab, stab, stab.

I find Crash to be the most fun personally...Vacant is ok, but too many deaths by nubshits just sprayin' N' prayin' round corners. Overgrown is ok sometimes, it's a pretty miserable map if you're stuck on a team with people that suck.

Ramirez you should play with us sometime, me and the rest of the gaf shadowrun crew are pretty good :P

But yeah, crash is the best lvl :)

When the match starts, the canal is like shooting fish in a barrel, but as the match progresses, the bridges are covered pretty well.
I can see your point (later on people tend to forget about the canal as their attention is on the bridges) but you're still way more vulnerable down there. The bridges at least have some cover (FWIW) and it's a straight dash across so you know where you're heading if you get spotted.

When I've played Overgrown the fights tend to be centred around the gas station, the two-storey house with the hole on the top floor across from it, and the house next to the bridge with the steps down into the canal. Of course some make a beeline for the attic but as was stated before a stun grenade up the stairs before you run in makes for easy knife kills. Plus I don't find the attic there nearly as effective as certain elevated positions in COD2 - too much cover for approaching enemies on the way there and no way to cover the canal entrance.

In any case, I don't think anyone's arguing that Crash is an amazing map. I see plenty of Crash-only servers in the future.

Yea, don't think I'm being rude by not accepting invites, I was in a game with Luke/HG and some other GAF guys last night.

Ahh allright, no problem :). Next time bring Luke as well ^^

The campers laugh at us while it is us who feeds them.

I vaguely remember the camping in GRAW 2 driving you nuts too. Something about thermal vision if I recall?

Yep. The thermal vision was my only recourse against the lay on the ground campers in GRAW1 and they fucking gimped it to uselessness in GRAW2. Guess who doesn't play GRAW2?

My impressions so far:

1. The radar is very well done. I like how it does not track in real time, but in waves every several seconds coupled with running it leads to a nice game of cat and mouse. Also knowing when the enemy has radar or not is a big boost to strategy especially when you want to stealth flank enemy position, which doesn't work as well when they have radar. Sneaking in te side and knifing 4 guys is great fun.

2. The weapon balance is pretty good, weapons get knocked for being overpowered but I dont think that's usually the case. I will make exception for the automatic sniper. For example a guy killed me with once, he fired and missed, fired, again and missed, and then he sprayed and prayed me and missed half the time:lol .

3.Maps seem well designed there are multiple ways to enter an area, and good cover in just about every area.

4.Sometime I find it a little diffiucult to enter the windows, especially the houses hopefully IW will give a bigger berth for for entering.

5. Airstrikes, are well done nice little to tool to take out the campers. Helicopters are also great not too overpowering, and acts like a seventh man giving your'e team the edge.

That's about it so far I'm pretty addicted to this game can't wait to play it again. I love the three stooges moments the most though. I saw a couple of enemies one trying to enter a door, and one trying to leave the door, they got stuck I threw a grenade and killed them both.

one really positive thing about cod4 is how fast you can find a game. faster than halo 2/3 even...which is nice because it would take 5-10 minutes to get games in GRAW

after a bit i think some of the scoring is still a bit off. i think kill scores should be split based on damage and not simply be 10/2. i also think last stand kills shouldn't count for 20 a piece. i would say 10 at the most and i'd guess maybe 5 or 8.

I just got the red dot for the M4 and I'm starting to get the hang of things. Just finished in first place on two straight maps (Overgrown and Vacant).

One of the touches I really like is the kill cam; I've found that I can learn a lot from seeing how I died.

I was also in the Halo 3 beta, and right now I can't really say which of the two multiplayer parts that I prefer. They're both great and I can see myself in the future having a hard time deciding which to play.

Does anyone have a way to get into the beta? I'm supposed to be in the beta...I just never got a token.

I'm really desperate guys :(

Still waiting for my token too. From the sounds of things over at the charlieoscardelta forums, there are a ton of people that haven't received theirs yet. I emailed after not receiving it over the weekend, just like the blog update told me to, and nothing has happened.

But not desperate enough to read the whole thread, wherein a way into the BETA is revealed and discussed by gentlemen of exceptional taste and good grooming?

Fie on thee, sirrah.

I read them, but even that would require another person to get me into the beta :p
.

Guys, if ther eis a GAF game... I BEG YOU! INVITE ME!!

GT: Lord Relix

I wanna see how I stand up! Hahaha (I am always in the top 3)

Any word on if there will be a beta for the PS3 version? Just curious.

Also: will it have a party system like the 360 version?

I hate how using other scopes automatically removes the front iron sights on the M16/M4. It's a small thing but it bothers me, it's not very realistic.

I really feel that respawning needs 1-2 seconds invulnerability
Same all FPS's could learn from this. At least give me time to find cover.

CoD4 respawns aren't TOO bad but I did get spawned on a grenade, spawned in the heat of battle on rare occasions and only the slightly more often (and equally annoying) enemies spawn behind me.
