COD 4 Beta Thread

Went 37-11 in a game at Vacant at little while ago. Was pretty nasty. I need about ten more headshots with the M4 to get the Red Tiger camo. My roommate and I are still having some odd connection problems but...Nothin we can do for now.

still getting connection problems at my brothers house. the other night the game was freezing for several seconds, which was a bit new. normally it gets jerky and you'll pulled and pointed all over the place. even going through walls. somehow it also kept making him the host and he has a crap connection, so everyone in the room but one other person had red bars.

Do you mean Blue Tiger or is there another camo after that?

Wait; because the player doesn't directly control any vehicles in MP, then there shouldn't be any vehicles at all?

Players don't get to directly control 3-story buildings, either. Or sheet metal. Should those be taken out? =)
There's no reason to have heavy ordinance in a 6v6 ground combat game with maps as small as these. It makes game balance a virtually impossible task.

There is a Red Tiger camo available from the final marksman challenge (if I remember correctly).

I should be on in about an hour once I get home from the office. Any gaffers wanna get a game going? (Haven't been in a gaf game since the good old counter strike days)
If not, I'll also be on in the late, late evening, so feel free to send me a friends request (and please do!)

I disagree. These features do not imbalance the game play, as every individual has equal opportunity to call the 'heavy ordinance' in. If anything, it offers a higher level of strategy, and rewards those who seek preservation; users of automatic weapons such as M4 think twice about suicide runs to refill their ammo: instead this encourages them to switch to a sidearm and seek out replacement ammo or weaponry.

This also furthers strategy in team tactics. If a party can position themselves to cover their primary assassin, they have a good chance at reaching the air strike and helicopter first. This does, however, lend itself quite well to the sniper class, while discouraging a more 'run and gun' tactic.

A friend sent me his code but the website says registration is down:(

Will it be back up?

if you have the code just go to Marketplace and input the code. It should then let you download the beta. I dont think you need to do anything at the web site at all.

I've been playing the beta since Saturday and have been following this thread since long before that. I typically start playing around 11pm PST.

GT: Tetris Attack

Can't connect to a team deathmatch game! None of my friends got in on the beta, so can any gaffers out there add me and invite me to a team deathmatch for some free frags? Maybe if I'm invited it'll work.

GT = bvowles

I'm sick of free for all. You're my only hope.

Hey, if anyone wants another for a gaf team, shoot me an invite (GT = Kthreev). I'v been playing since saturday, and I seem to do terrible by myself, but whenever i party with my friend I always do better :)

Ah, yep, I see it. I got the Blue Tiger the other day and thought that was it so now I'm going back to get me the Red. :)

yeah shotgun seems like the most useless weapon in the game. And I dont like the rocket launcher much, other than for shooting down helicopters. Its way too slow. People that complain about grenades or grenade launcher or c4 being too powerful probably dont use them often, because if you miss, reload takes forever, or to throw another grenade. Also if you are in too close and someone comes up on you quickly which happens often, those weapons are useless. Still they have uses, which makes them balanced in my mind.

C4 is the only one that remotely takes any skill to use out of the side arm type weapons. You get a game on Vacant with more than 2-3 people using the grenade launchers it is one of the most miserable experiences ever.

It's not that these weapons are unbalanced I guess, it's that they result in so many noob kills that it kills some enjoyment of the game.

I know this problem isn't limited to COD, but I'm getting really sick of hitting people 3-4 times dead on with my sights up, only to watch the kill cam and see that on their screen I shot maybe once, and then I watch them kill me as they wildly fire from the hip.

Where abouts do you hail from? If you're playing on a host close to home this rarely, if ever, happens.

Agreed. I know this may be unpopular with some, but I think this Beta has shown that blending RPG elements in multiplayer FPS games is admirable but in the case of COD4, it is a broken mess. With the perks, you have no idea that the guy you have just been stalking is capable of taking more damage than you and when you start to shoot at him, he turns and fires from the hip and kills you. I have nailed people multiple times only to have them turn around and kill me instantly. Makes me yurn for a more realistic kill system like Rainbow Six.

The shotgun is totally useless; it's slow, innacurate, weak and has poor range.
When you add perks it can be a decent weapon but there's no point in using it when the knife can do a better job without perks etc.

rofl if it's so crayap then why do people bitch and cry when i use it.

"ohhh all you can do is camp in buildings"
"ohhh all you do is run at people and shotgun them"
"ohhh you don't have to aim with the shotgun"
"ohhh all you have to do is hit people once"

The wierd part is, i never talk trash. I just have a good game with it and people are on my back right at the turn. Fars as i'm concerned.. if you get stomped by a shotgun on overgrown or crash it's your own fault cuz my skill is in knowing where to be not swinging the boomstick.

I agree with everything you wrote, especially the last part.

The shotgun is awesome, especially on these small beta maps. Every team needs someone who throws most strategy out the window and just goes headhunting and that's what the shotgun is good for. Lead people into your crosshair and get one good shot off. Dead. Anyone complaining about shooting someone multiple times, either aim better and hit them where it counts or stop playing shooters because those situations happen in every shooting game.

The situation with COD 4 is different. Shooting someone multiple times and hitting them and them surviving because they are protected by an invisible perk is different. And I know how to play FPS.

But you also have perks. I don't see how it's any different than playing Halo and getting killed by someone who grabbed an overshield.

Overshield is a bit temporary and you can tell by a visible cue that they have one on when you shoot them.

If anyone wants to get some games going this morning (Thursday Sep. 6th) send me a message/invite. I'm gonna be on for a while!

GT- Teen Ape

And you can tell what perk an enemy has when they kill you.

What "invisible perk" is there that would protect someone anyway? If you can fire at them and "hit them multiple times" and they don't die then you need to aim at their head or their chest. There is always a way to counter whatever the other team is doing.

I've had over 35 kills consistently with the shotgun and 3 special nade perk (stun) on Vacant. You just suck with it.

Wow welcome to the boards. You sound like a nice guy.:lol
Edit: "...nice KID."

You and me both. We know nothing about shooting people in FPS and working as a team, do we? ;)

Who was talking to you? Your problem AKAIK is, as you said, a problem that is in a lot of shooters. My posts were directed towards the guy talking about invisible perks protecting someone he has shot 3-4 times. I know of no perk that would allow you to survive 3-4 good shots so the simple advice would be to aim for parts of their body that will bring them down. That or maybe switch to a more powerful weapon.

Bottom line is, in the beta at least, the perks offer you no ridiculous advantage that makes you invincible or almost impossible to kill. The gameplay is balanced, the fact that with 5 kills you can send in an airstrike really helps against camper problems that plague other shooters like Halo or R6. Games can constantly swing hundreds of points with smart play and good teamwork. My only problem with the beta are the spawn deaths and that isn't a big issue and is surely magnified by the fact that all 3 beta maps aren't that big, especially Crash and Vacant.

Why not some tips if you rule at shotti?
Okay...

I only use it on Vacant since you can easily surprise people around corners. Stay indoors. Always keep moving and watch the radar and never stay in one spot too long. I weave in and out of rooms to stay out of the long hallways (where the shotgun is useless at long range) and hunt for people.

Instead of using the grip, I use the 3 special nade perk in its place. I think the other perks I have are steady aim and deep impact. You have to be close to kill with the shotgun anyways, so you shouldn't need the grip to help you. When I see someone at a distance, I'll use a stun nade to close the gap and get close enough to kill them before they recover. This is also a chance for you to approach them from another angle other then the one they saw you at before they got stunned.

Always aim for the upper chest.

Learn the map.

Awesome thanks! You're not so bad.:D
Stupid question since I never thought about changing my weapon, can you change weapons once you see what map you are playing?

This game is awesome for people who suck at FPS games.

Which is why I love it. Best game ever.

Also, SAW with red dot is now my weapon of choice. Squeeze off 3 shot bursts and you are a killing machine. Also, go spray and pray at close quarters with the steady aim perk and you've got devastation both far and near.

I actually find the RPG-7 to be complete shit. WTF, this is the weapon that the U.S. military fears so much? lawls, etc.

I am also seeing some of that killcam inconsistency where I know I fired off a few bursts at the guy who killed me but from his POV I barely got off a shot. Grr...

The "WHAT THE FUCK, I EMPTIED A CLIP INTO THAT GUY'S HEAD AND I ONLY GET OFF ONE SHOT IN THE KILLCAM?!" situation is more an unoptimized netcode issue than reason to condemn the perk system, yes?

But what if said guy is using the invisible Lag Thy Enemy perk?

yeah that shit really pisses me off too. I'll be aiming right at him and my kill cam will show me shotting the other way!
