COD4 PC Screenshots

Does anyone actually miss the pacman hunt for health packs? I just want to cut off those complaints at the pass.

I was re-playing CoD1 a few weeks ago; trying to get past an encounter, I couldn't figure out why I was dying in one hit. Finally realized that I was walking into the fight with ~10 health. D'oh.

Regen health can obviously ruin a shooter if not done well (lord knows), but I'll take it over magic health packs any day in a modern-combat game. Hunting for little white boxes in-between fights is a buzz- (and immersion-) kill. It was cool in Half-Life for me, because you at least had the fiction that your suit is tending to your medical needs, and just needs supplies (like from the wall plugs) to do so.

So anyhow. CoD4 is regen, but it's more sophisticated (behind-the-scenes) than CoD2.
I'd prefer no health regeneration at all, not even health packs. Like in CS, Red Orchestra, SWAT 4, COD, Raven Shield, etc. It's strange to regenerate your health after getting capped by a M4 Carbine.

Regardless, it might be a server option if it is even in the PC version. I know you can turn perks off, I don't see why this would be any different.

So pressing F5 and F6 is a skill now?

What's up with the over-the-top HDR? I hope the hdr intensity is tweakable, because in some shots is really overdone.

It's not strange that you are still running around alive, period, after being capped by an M4 Carbine? :lol

Exactly, you should be dead, or near death. Not regenerating your health.

Not pressing the button is but not having access to health anytime anyplace and having to play accordingly. Regenerating health is basically free lives.

That's why I love the Quake series TDM so much. You have to actually develop a strategy for maps and have tactical skill as a team because you have to shut the other team out of health, armor and weapons. This of course makes for a very unpleasant experience for anyone not as skilled in those regards. You get owned plenty of times.

In games nowadays everyone stands a chance because you usually spawn with your weapons and then even your health regenerates.

Hardcore mode.

I can speak on what's in the beta. There's a hardcore mode for the highbrow gamer. I've had a lot of fun with it. It's a bare-bones realism mode. The weapons are very effective, there's zero HUD. We listened to gamers [who created similar mods on PC] by putting it in the game, and giving it to them off the shelf. Hardcore mode can be layered over any gametype.

I doubt they would allow health regen in such a mode.

I think it makes for more compelling gameplay, particularly in COD4 where you can't hide behind just any wall to re-gen. And not having to hunt down health packs lets the player get back into the action quicker.

I can't wait to play that mode. I've never been a big fan of radar. The health regeneration issue never came into mind, but that's cool too. It's going to be very tough to pull off kill streaks in that mode.

Any systems (regen, packs, medic, etc) that let you take an M4 to the face and regain your full combat effectiveness in under, say, six months are going to be unrealistic to a point. =)

However! Like No_Style is hinting at, that's what Hardcore modes (MP) and Veteran difficulty (SP) are for. Masochists like us.

The radar, health regen and good starting weapons... FPS games are so easy these days. I remember evading other players in dozens of PC shooters just to grab a few medkits behind their back and shooting them from behind with the shotgun, instead of following dots on a radar with a sniper to kill enemy's on the other side of the map.

Hardcore mode sounds boss.

I hope they have it on the PS3 version.

I hope the PS3 version supports mouse and keyboard too!

PC shots look amazing though.

Well im glad it looks better then the half baked COD4 MP Beta.
Cause it looked horrible... comapred to the SP.

If you have a PC that can handle it, has to be a PC buy.

I rather stick to Mass Effect and Orange Box :lol

Will try the demo. I guess regenerating health and the "take your stupid ass AI buddies from checkpoint to checkpoint to stop infinite respawning enemies" gameplay make a return for this one?

It did? Looks good but not really stunning. Maybe it looks a lot (like a LOT) better in motion?

Just curious what games look better?

Looks like MGS2's holding of the "Best Rain" award might actually be at risk.
the whole reason MGS2 tanker rain sequence is still considered among the best ever isn't the complexity of the rain itself, or how good the rain coming down looks but rather the fact that it splashed on the environment, it's props and the character models. From the sense of best looking rain falling down in the space between the camera and the stage/actors, then there are plenty of games that do it better, this one included. In terms of best looking/feeling rain scene, then it still stands.

But I really want to see some next-gen rain, which not only looks good coming down and splashes when colliding with objects in the environment (even if it has to be faked) but also has proper visual occulsion as distance and intensity increases.

Did you miss hardcore mode?

Crysis for PC, hell even QW has better textures and is at least on par in regards to complexity. Here, taken from the official thread, taken in demo mode, hence no HUD but not doctored:

Oh and these are from multiplayer.

KZ2 for consoles.

@Phife,

Nice try, but to me, the COD4 shots look a hell of a lot better than those QW shots.

Hopefully the PC version will have good performance, IQ is a given over the 360 version, but the 60fps is appealing.

I agree on those and I'd add Halo 3 to that list.

I've played QW. It's nice but it just looks like an upgraded Quake 4, which means some of the effects are starting to look dated. COD4's lighting is much better. The only thing Halo 3 has over COD4 is art but that's not completely fair since COD4 is going for realism. I'm not surprised if some console fans want COD4 to fail since it was the only game, other than Crysis, that was mentioned at E3 as having graphics that are comparable to KZ2.

Awesome, can't wait to play this in 3 years time. Hopefully people will still be playing it online.

Why would console fans want Call of Duty 4 to fail when it's coming to consoles as well? Most Xbox 360 owners have already played the game and there's an entire thread full of praise for it. Take off the goggles.

I've been saving for an HDTV (having both ps3 and 360), and it's hard coz my bank account tends to decrease a little during the month, go figure. However, Crysis and now this are seriously making me think about spending probably less than half the price of an HDTV and upgrade my pc to Crysis-worthy-status (almost). What should I do GAF? HDTV (eventually) + COD4 360/ps3 and no Crysis, or no HDTV for a looong time, and COD4 PC+Crysis?

Oh the humanity! :(

:lol What? You're insane dude... Between this thread, the Uncharted thread, and Halo3 vs Resistance thread, someone needs to give you a nice snug white jacket... WTF would people want this to fail as they get to play it as well? If there's people out there that are dying to show PC gamers what's up, then they have issues just like you...

Anyways, I think the screens look really nice... I can't wait to play this again... I'm really missing the MP from the beta and want to check out the rest of perks, maps, and weapons...

360 gamers are different because they're also hoping that COD4 will be comparable to Killzone 2 visually. I didn't want to single out anyone but it's clear which specific console fans are downplaying COD4's graphics. They don't mind saying that Halo3 looks better since it's already accepted that Halo 3's graphics aren't even that impressive technically.

You must think a lot of people are insane since few are as fanatic about Sony as you are.

Let's go through what I said in the other threads: I think that 1) Uncharted will be an AAA game but it's not the best looking game in the world. MGS4's characters look better to me. 2)Resistance's graphics are better technically than Halo 3's but Halo 3 has better art. Also, Halo's SP is better but Resistance's MP is better.

If you think that's insane, then I'll rather not be sane by your standards.

I officially announce that this Call of Duty 4 thread is now overtaken by console fanboys.

Everybody that wanted to discuss Call of Duty 4 can go home. This is now about which games for which consoles look better.

It's sad that people have to come in with their hidden agendas. I liked Halo 3 very much but it's just plain ridiculous to say that it looks better than COD4. Not only does COD4 look better, its framerate is also twice as high with barely or no slowdown. I mean, Halo 3 has been called Halo HD while everyone at E3 was just awed at what the developers of COD4 were able to acheive for a multiplatform game.

The ramp up in visuals on the PC has been exceptional since S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Too bad it costs so much monies to keep up with the scene or else I would be fapping even more.

are you serious?

About which part? I don't see what's so controversial about what I said. Many reviewers have commented on Halo 3's lack of stunning technical acheivements while praising its artistic direction. It was pretty much the other way around for Resistance.

Anyone that has played the COD4 beta knows this game is absolutely fucking amazing. I'm jizzing my pants in anticipation of hardcore mode. The game runs beautifully at a rock-solid 60 FPS - I can't even fathom how it will look on a powerful PC (well, those screenshots do look incredible). I don't have an up-to-date PC at the moment, but all my friends are getting it on 360 anyway. Both PC gamers and 360 owners should be agree on the awesomeness that is COD4.
