"Exactly games like UT/Cal, USC/Nebraska and Arks, Texas/OSU, OU/Oregon Louisville/Miami would never happen. OOC games would turn to shit."

I call B.S. Look at Wisconsin. One loss all year and they had no shot at the national championship. Why? Because they had a powder puff schedule outside of playing Michigan. Teams that seriously want to contend need at least one top 25 non-conference foe in their schedule. Either that or they have to go undefeated.

Nope Wisconsin didn't have a chance because they started the year unranked, had they been in the top 10 to start the year they would possibly be playing for the title. Which brings up another point drop all polls before Nov.

Who says it has to be 'fair' for the number one team? That's ridiculous-- the polls shouldn't make a national champion and in certain years, with multiple undefeated teams, why shouldn't it be decided on the field? What was Auburns reward for going undefeated 3 years ago?

Just cuz a team is number 1 doesn't mean they're the greatest-- they should have to prove it on the field, just like every other team that would be in this playoff.

I heard that Jimbo was a Bowden (married in) and that is who Bobby is picking to replace his son and then take over the program is there any truth to this?

I'm not sure if he's married in or not, but he played under Terry in the 80s and then coached alongside him and Tommy at Samford as well as later at Auburn where he stayed until Terry resigned. He joined LSU when Nick Saban was hired and has been there since, but he's reportedly been unhappy and has been named as one of the top candidates to replace Jeff for the past month.

Nothing's public, but with our big push in LA, it certainly wouldn't surprise me if there was some truth to it all. I'd imagine whoever is named the new OC will be first in line to replace Bobby when he does retire.

pxleyes said:
I mean no offense, this is honest, but you guys still have great recruiting? I didn't know Bobby could still pull that kind of weight with all the talk from your boosters.

Recruiting is definitely off this year, although we did finish up #3 last year. FSU is typically a slow starter, but we've been particularly slow this year and only have 20 scholarships available. I imagine this year we'll end up somewhere in the teens, but be much improved next year after we hopefully bounce back with a more capable OC.

Bowden is probably the best recruiting finisher out there, even in his position now.

I think that your recruiting wouldn't be down this year if your admins would get on the ball and hire an OC already, unless they are doing what I think they are doing, and that is not only looking for an OC...but an eventual replacement for Bobby.

heh, we will certainly see how true that is in about a month.

OT:

It was 2 years ago to do the day from the BCS selection that Urban Meyer was named head coach of the Florida Gators. In literally 2 years to the day, he brings us from the Zook era to the National Championship game.

Should we win, Meyer should be coach of the year. He or Schiano.

I'm of the same opinion, but at least it's out there that Jeffy is gone and someone else is coming in. Personally, I think that's one of the main reasons the Boosters paid him off.. to let offensive recruits know they wouldnt be squandered.

Well, to be honest, Skip said he'd replace Wisconsin with Oklahoma. He just went off the end of the year Top 10 poll.

Anyone citing anything from the mouth of Skip Bayless is automatically wrong.

For pxleyes-- the Pac-10 homers at Anderson & Hester explain better than I do what I was trying to say earlier about SOS:

This is what I was trying to say-- your opponent's W-L record should be weighted according to who they played.

Also:

This is why I said earlier that the reason for the Pac-10 having such a high SOS is the extra conference game. It basically feeds back on itself, since they all play each other, boosting the SOS for all the conference teams (whereas Florida, for example, is hurt by Georgia playing Colorado, Auburn playing Buffalo, and Arkansas playing LA-Monroe and SE Missouri).

That makes sense. At least one of the polls has the balls to reveal a little more on WHY their formula is what it is.

Yeah dude seriously he went to Vanderbilt what the hell does he know about sports. Woody Paige went to a real school he knows his stuff :D

pxleyes said:
Why shouldn't it by Boise St.? They went undefeated, didn't they?

No no .. I was saying that it was Boise St this year (which is an ideal #8 to have to play). But most other years it's going to be a second place team from the PAC/BIG10/SEC. That sucks!

For example, it was Miami FL in the #8 spot in 2005. That's not fair to make a #1 team play them, then go on and have to win two more games.

Here's how last year's mythical tournament would have shook out:

USC
Miami

Buckeyes
Oregon

Penn State
Notre Dame

Texas
Georgia

On the outside: LSU, Alabama, Auburn, V Tech, WV, TCU

2 Big Ten's, 2 Pac-10's

Every year you would have that, overrepresentation of Big 10 or Pac-10/SEC and other deserving teams getting shut out. I

Ironically, WV wound up beating Georgia head to head in their bowl game. Oregon lost to Oklahoma in their bowl game.

In truth the money is divided (although not evenly teams that bring in more get more) between all 12 of us so

SEC total= $50,175,000/12 teams= minimum of $4,181,250/team

Take into account that teams like Vandy will get less and you will get the most.

The first two of those things are getting built anyways though, so I can only hope we get the new screens.

Don't the teams participating in the bowls get two shares?

Hey have they announced what players get to go watch Troy Smith win the Heisman this year?

Chris Leak :)

Anyway...should be Darren McFadden, Ray Rice, Mike Hart, and maybe Steve Slaton and Garret Wolfe

Baby Quinn will no doubt be there, unfortunately

Calvin Johnson should be there - it's not his fault that his QB is a joke

Battlezone said:

Yeah, something like that. The money for every bowl game is seperated into 14 shares. 12 Shares go to the 12 teams, the 13th share goes to the team that went to that bowl, and the 14 share goes to the SEC front office. That's how I remember it working, for the SEC anyway.

It's pointless to have six or four when you can have eight and take the same amount of time. I'd settle for six but four isn't doing anything that you don't have now. these things need to be as inclusive as possible for the sake of having the best quality of champion.

USC the 7th toughest? GTFO here. I agree with weighting the games played, but there's still no ****ing way USC's schedule ranks that high. The weighting is clearly biased...to the Pac10, obviously. That extra conference game shit is a copout considering it's only a two or three team conference. That extra conference game is a gimme for USC considering the composition of the conference. PEACE.

I can see the USC thing. When you're comparing USC's opponents, you have to remember who they played. Even teams like Stanford, which went what, 1-11?, played a full schedule of sweet teams.

With the SEC, Florida plays sweet teams, but a) Those teams don't necessarily play sweet teams, and b) The crappy teams that florida plays end up scheduling REALLY crappy teams, which hurts Florida.

Yeah but I was willing to let it slide when they had a chance to go to the national championship because they had the hardest OOC in the country.

if Miami was smart, they'd go after Mike Leech at Texas Tech.

he proved himself at Kentucky by making that shitty QB there a #1 draft pick, he proved it at OU by completely revamping their offense and taking them to win the National Championship, and he's proved it at Tech imo b/c they're a middle tier school that gets 4th'zies at best in recruiting their own state [behind texas, ou, and a&m] and still mounting some impressive wins every year.

it would be scary what he could do with Miami level talent.

In the event of an oversell, UF uses a priority point system to determine which fans get tickets. Fans get one point for every $100 they give to the Gator Boosters program and point for every year they've held season tickets. For last week's Southeastern Conference Championship Game in Atlanta, UF had to refund more than 8,500 people. Fans with fewer than 126 points were all turned away, and that will likely be the case for the National Championship Game as well.

Well our wealthiest boosters (Bull Gators) will certainly be represented.

Spurrier on his BCS vote:
"Heck, I'm a Gator," he said. "I went there. So I had a lot of reason to vote for them right there. It just appeared they're 12-1, the other team is 11-1, I guess that's about it."
:lol you HAVE to laugh at that. The man is great.

if Leach goes to Miami, lookout. there's no way he won't turn it around there. his offensive schemes are incredible. just look at his resume. i hope he don't go just b/c i fear what miami will become.

it would be cool for OU though, less worry about Texas Tech. :D

OSU: About that bowl thing...

STUDENTS GOING TO BOWL GAME NEED TO MAKE
ARRANGEMENTS WITH FACULTY TO MISS CLASSES

This year's football bowl game is different from previous appearances
by the Buckeyes in that it occurs while classes are in session. Students
planning to attend the National Championship game in Glendale, Ariz.
on January 8 should keep several points in mind.

- No changes will be made to the Winter Quarter 2007 academic
calendar in response to the game. Classes begin January 3 and will be
held on January 8 and 9 as scheduled. Students are particularly
reminded that they are expected to be in their classes January 3, 4 and
5.

- It is up to each instructor to determine whether he or she will excuse
absences and/or permit make-up work by students who miss class to
attend the bowl game. Students planning to be absent for the bowl
game should make arrangements in advance with each instructor.
Faculty are not obligated to make accommodations, and their decisions
are final.

- Students who do not report to the first class of the quarter for each
course in which they are enrolled may lose their places to those on
waiting lists.

- Those thinking about driving to the Phoenix area should be realistic
about the time and distance. It is about 1,900 miles from the OSU
campus to Phoenix. This is, at optimum conditions, a minimum of 30
hours of driving time, and more likely 35 hours or more. Bad weather is
likely to be encountered on parts of the journey and could significantly
extend the travel time.

The overwhelming majority of students (as well as faculty, staff,
alumni and other fans) will be cheering the Buckeyes via television.
Those who will be there in person should include coursework
arrangements in their pre-game planning.

http://www.topix.net/content/trb/2013522936148605983125910787782958401178

For the first time in nearly two months, middle linebacker Christian Taylor made it through a full week of practice. Taylor has been playing on Saturdays after sitting out some midweek workouts to protect a nagging ankle injury. But the extra week off - UCLA had no game last weekend - gave him enough rest to fully prepare for this afternoon's game against No. 2 USC at the Rose Bowl.

:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol Stephen Colbert just explained the BCS. It was absolutely brilliant. I need a youtube of that.

At halftime in the UCLA basketball game tonight the team and Dorrell presented the Victory Bell to everyone and Dorrell gave a speech to the crowd. He was cracking cocky smiles and being generally energetic. I have not seen shit like that from this guy, ever. Who the hell kidnapped the real man and replaced him with this pod person? Because I would like to give him, her or it a medal!

Oh yeah, I'm watching the ABC broadcast of the game and y'all missed out big time during the TV timeout around the 5 minute mark of the fourth quarter when both teams got the unsportsmanlike penalties. That was probably my favorite part of the whole enchilada and it probably happened while everyone else in the country was viewing one of those ****ing "THIS IS URH COUNTRYYYYYYY" commercials. The "highlights" of it when they come back don't capture the moment at all.

Au Contraire!

From AOLSportsblog's favorite college people this year

6. Reggie Nelson. I love Reggie Nelson. I love his dreadlocks, his impossibly deep pass drops, and his tendency to separate tooth from jaw whenever a receiver is foolish enough to approach the Reggie Nelson Demilitarized Zone, which extends from the deep middle of the field to Pyongyang. Fear him. Love him.

:lol

Looks like the FHSAA will be investigating Lakeland (school from Central Florida that one of the top High Schools in the country) due to some comments that their star RB Chris Rainey made recently (copy of the audio interview here: http://www.miami.com/multimedia/miami/news/archive/audio/ChrisRainey.html).

It is this kind of success that has turned Lakeland football players into local celebrities, instantly recognized and constantly praised.

'People come up to you like, `Hey, great game on Friday,' or, 'Great catch,' '' said senior Paul Wilson, a wide receiver who also will play for UF next year. ``You don't know who they are, but they know who you are.''

Then there are the rewards that come with recognition. Rainey said a local clothing vendor recently gave him a bag full of sports jerseys and jewelry in exchange for his autograph. Another time, an elderly woman approached him at a restaurant, gave him a hug and handed him a wad of cash.

''I didn't even count it,'' Rainey said. ``When I walk around, people are buying me food, giving me money. I'm like, damn, I'm glad I'm Chris Rainey. It's real nice to be me.''
Miami Herald story
FHSAA Commissioner John Stewart contacted Miami Herald Executive Sports Editor Jorge Rojas on Tuesday morning to verify the authenticity of the quote attributed to Rainey.
“We stand by the reporting in the story,’’ Rojas said. ``It’s all on tape.’’

In a letter sent to The Miami Herald, Stewart said, “This office is notifying Lakeland High School that the FHSAA is beginning a formal investigation into this matter.’’
He later said, ``We’re looking at it and talking to Lakeland people to see what is going on. . . . We have to prove that [Rainey] accepted gifts. It’s going to be his word against the reporter’s.’’

No. 1-ranked Lakeland (14-0) is preparing to play Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas in the 5A state championship game. The Dreadnaughts, who are ranked No. 1 in three national rankings, are trying to win their third consecutive state title and sixth overall.

It could affect his eligibility for the final and potentially for going to UF.

http://theledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061205/BREAKING/61205004

What a dumbass. Yeah, UF should revoke his offer just because he's not that bright.

Of course this stuff goes on in any area where high school ball is big. It's nasty, but it happens.

Either way, we don't really need widereceivers, they might get a total of 10 catches all of next year once Tebow and Harvin start lining up back there:P

He's actually a RB -- probably the best in the state behind Noel Devine. I'm not sure why he's listed at WR on Rivals and Scout. In the semi-finals against Daytona Mainland, he ran for 326 yards (they apparently averaged 57 allowed per game and he picked up a 72-yard TD run early on :lol).

I feel bad for the kid to a certain extent.. he's clearly an amazing talent and it's not like this doesn't always happen. I'd hate to see his whole football career go up in smoke over this. It's not like he broke the law or anything. If you listen to the audio interview, he's kind of goaded into saying stupid stuff too.

MIAMI (AP) -- Former University of Miami and NFL quarterback Bernie Kosar would like to return to the Hurricanes -- as their next coach.

Miami television station WFOR reported Tuesday night that Kosar would like the job, and The Miami Herald quoted Kosar in its Wednesday editions saying "I'm interested."

"UM people knew that I had been offered the president of the Cleveland Browns job," Kosar told the newspaper. "They knew I wanted to get back into football and asked if I'd be interested in the UM job. At first it was just flattering, but then I thought, 'Yeah, I'd really like to look into it."'

Kosar, who told the newspaper that he's had preliminary talks with university officials about replacing Larry Coker as coach of the Hurricanes, did not immediately return e-mails or phone messages from The AP on Wednesday.
