Here's a question. Where the hell did the term "Upset Special" come from anyway? When you think about it, it really makes no sense. "I have so-and-so on upset special this week". I do like the sound of it though.

Jimmy the Greek, maybe? Probably doesn't even have a real origin, just something that happened.

The Montana Project.

Obviously a lot of people knew the “G”. However, it was hard to count people who said either “Georgia State” or “Georgia Tech” as a no, because they knew the “G” belonged to a-Georgia-team. That said, it was hard not jack slap the people who said Gators.

The “control questions we asked were”:
1. Are you a college football fan?
2. What does the University of Michigan helmet look like?
3. Do you know the official title of the USC cheerleaders? NO ONE KNEW THE ANSWER!! NO ONE–I REPEAT NOT ONE–HAD HEARD OF THEM REFERRED TO AS THE SONG GIRLS!
4. Can you tell me something, anything about college football.
5. Do you know what team this helmet is affiliated with.
We didn’t ask everyone all of those questions, but that is pool we chose from.
The bars we went to had casinos, so some people were wary about being filmed in a casino. Some people were really genuine, chatted, wanted to know how we were doing and wished us luck. I didn’t meet any Dawgs fans though, which I was a little surprised about.
Honestly, I expected higher numbers, but that’s what we got out of three weekends.
Thanks for this opportunity–it was a fun ride!

Basically, Stewart Mandel said a few years ago that if you took a Michigan helmet to a sports bar in Montana, that if they were football fans, 100 out of 100 would recognize the helmet. If you showed them the USC Song Girls, all 100 would be able to say that name. If Joe Paterno walked in, all 100 would know who he was. But if you took a Georgia helmet in, the majority wouldn't know what school it was for. So a Georgia fan in Montana took a Georgia helmet in and did an experiment to see who recognized the helmet. The results?

I bet the Gators would do alright!

I wish he had actually done a Michigan helmet as well. Some of those "No" people seemed clueless in general.

edit: I see that he actually asked them to describe it, but since it was a control question asked rather than a test question, I would still like to see it.

I don't really think that the song girls are common knowledge.

Me either. I wouldn't have known their name if you showed me their pictures. I would have maybe guessed USC cheerleaders or something.

Same here, I guess they just did this in the interest of time. I guarantee you that some of the Gators responses would not have had Florida as the team. Some of the people in that video weren't real football fans. I still thought it was a pretty cool experiment.

I wonder how many people would assume the Oregon helmets are for Ohio State, or vice versa. Yeah, you think people know colors, but some of the people in this video also thought Georgia's red and black helmet represented the Packers.

As someone who's undergrad was spent at Berkeley, spent 7 years in Wisconsin and now works at the Univ. of Southern Cal I can say with some certainty that almost no one outside of Los Angeles would recognize the "Song Girls" as hot as they are.

Wonder how recognizable the old fashioned helmets are, specifically Alabama and Penn States.

Would OU's helmet (that just has OU on it) or Southern Cal's strange looking trogan man on the side, be any better?

I only know of the Song Girls, because of how much the USC guys here talk about them. I'd just recognize them as attractive girls with dresses on that play up to their legs and ass.

I'd still like them as much, Song Girls or no Song Girls.

I doubt hardly anyone would get those because they're just two colors, there's no logo for the school. I mean, most real football fans would. I know I would get them, but if you did this same poll at a sports bar on the far side of the country, a lot of people would be wrong.

I'd hope the white stripe would help.

Not sure what kind of change would even be possible. I know I wouldn't use the new Alabama logo. Maybe that old kick-ass one.

Just look at it, majestically kicking your ass, knowing that you're better off dying by the Elephant, than it would be waiting on the Bloody Ocean Water.

There's always stupid people in every large group. I bet you could show a UCLA helmet to some people and they wouldn't know what school it belonged to.

LOL this shit just gets more crazy.

http://espn.go.com/college-football...ence-divided-14th-football-member-sources-say

The Big East is divided over whether to pursue Air Force or BYU as its 14th football member, while another option the conference is considering is creating a 16-team football league by adding Army, Air Force and BYU, industry and league sources told ESPN.

On Thursday, recently hired Big East commissioner Mike Aresco reiterated in Tampa, Fla., that the conference will add a 14th football member, echoing comments that former commissioner John Marinatto made months ago that it would add another member from out West to get to 14 teams.

I'm guessing 16 teams to try the shitty strategy of quantity over quality to salvage anything.

Damn, I loved that logo.

Damn, I loved that logo.

That Nike swoosh to the left of the elephant always bothered me.. but besides that it was an epic (if somewhat busy) logo.

I love Cal's classic logo. I think they're pretty easily recognizable - it'd be more recognizable to the average college football fan if they won a few more games over the years.

Just 12 years ago the WAC had ~16 teams. Next year, the WAC won't exist. You can prolong the inevitable for a little while, but in the end the result will be the same

The irony is, they basically just changed conference names and nothing else. The MWC teams were ex WAC teams anyway, now the rest of the WAC just moved over.

That's not a nike swoosh. We were with Russell during the years we had that logo.

Might have secured tickets for the the FSU vs USF game next Sat.!! It's a real difficult & expensive ticket to get since Tampa is like the #1 or #2 city for FSU alums. Going to be at least 40% filled with Noles next Sat. :lol

My bro says he has them, but I want to see them for myself before getting excited.
