Reddit's looking a bit funny lately too, lots of "you can't trust this guy" messaging going on with the weird common phrasing. Quite a bit of downplaying NeoGAF itself too (as a biased source). Feels like we're in the middle of a cold war spy novel.

The PS4 release date for me was always difficult to accept as truth fact. It seemed rather early. What could have happened was that Cboat sources were very optimistic about PS4 dev tools, the state of the software/OS and told him that it could definitely launch in October considering the maturity of the software development environment. Hardware global availability though would be impossible to achieve at such an early date. Has he posted yet?
 
CBOAT could get 99 leaks out of his next 100 wrong or inaccurate, and I'd still believe just because that 1 accurate leak would be either a magical or hilarious thing.

The fact that its mostly juniors is because juniors have a vague understanding that you can get banned quickly but don't understand the criteria for it (e.g. talking about banning people).

It proved to me that CBoaT (and to some extent verendus) don't have inside sources at Sony. I was told pretty categorically that it would be impossible for them to launch in October. But the rumor was EXTREMELY widespread. Every avenue that rumors spread through included it. I'm assuming that boat heard the rumor enough times from enough people and believed it. Honestly I did also for a while until someone spelled out pretty in depth why it wasn't going to happen and I accepted that the rumor was wrong and decided to risk my rep on it.


I don't think it means CBoaT isn't trustable. I think he is connected and may in fact have inside knowledge somewhere (MS it would seem). I think his PS4 release date info was just him passing along rumors that were repeated a trillion times. I leaked quite a few xbox exclusives before e3... not because i know people at MS but because it's what people at sony had heard. I was lucky and mostly right. In this case BoaT was wrong.

I'm not terribly familiar with CBOAT, but I've picked up a few things across GAF.

So, a Microsoft insider was wrong about...Sony inside information, and people want him banned? Uh, what?

It sounds to me like he has a rock solid track record for MS stuff, but his Sony stuff is less certain, because he's not a primary Sony insider, and got some Sony stuff incorrect. God forbid, he was off by two weeks for the PS4 launch! HANG HIM!!!

This seems like a non-issue to me, and I have no idea who CBOAT is outside of a quick rundown of his credentials. If you don't like CBOAT rumors, is it really that hard to just ignore threads started by him, or ignore posts by him if you come across them? I guess it's more fun to let your disdain be known by all than to just shut up and move on...

The calls for a ban are ridiculous. You really want the voice for rumors that turn out to be true more than half the time to be silenced? Shit I would take a 20% track record if that 20% included real shit nobody could have guessed. And Crazy Buttocks is better than that my a decent margin.

Do your sources approve of your posts here? Or know about them?

You've never hidden your real identity (unlike the rest) so surely people talking to you know it is not stopping with you. That is, unless there are things you can and can't talk about. Then they definitely know what you're sharing and they're in control.

Do you aspire to work at Sony? I'd love to see you there in a community aspect.
 
I still appreciate CBOAT's posts and info, but this is exactly why his stuff should still be considered rumor and not fact like lots of people like to push it as.
 
No insider even with trusted and reliable connections can be 100% right. Cboat like others is just a messenger, his sources might have been told something subject to change, inaccurate or plain wrong.
It happens. Glorifying first and hating later is not a really coherent thing to do. Take the rumors/leaks for what they are and enjoy that you might get to know things in advance albeit with a probability of being wrong.
Of course this situation has showed that 'truthfacts' do not really exist until they actually happens or they are proven.

CBOAT isn't/wasn't just an "insider". His word was taken as gospel and truth, if he said something then it was so. When CBOAT said MS were having yield issues the thread title was changed to say TRUTHFACT. When CBOAT said the Family sharing was 1hr trials, the title of the thread was changed to reflect that. CBOAT was given a level of faith and trust I haven't seen given to other "insiders".

Only CBOAT knows what CBOAT knows and he chose to say that Oct release was a truthfact. He used that label. He now put a HUGE seed of doubt into every time he previously used that label. He now sullied his reputation is a way so direct, no amount of re-translation and reinterpretation can fix his statement.

CBOAT is still a person with clear insider connections, but there are others with insider connections with GAF but their words are not taken as anything more than rumour, and I now put CBOAT in that same level.

CBOAT has been right most of the time so he should get some slack for the ones he gets wrong. If he starts getting something like 5 things in a row wrong then his credibility will suffer.

I (typically) don't post anything unless I have two sources on it.... for two reasons. One - I can be more certain it's right. Two - it can't be traced back to the person telling me.


Most of the stuff I hear I'm told "don't say anything about this" and then I don't say anything about it. A lot of it is rumor though. Like people actually working at Sony saying "I heard blah blah blah" and then cross checking that with other people. It also becomes a rich get richer type of thing as I leak more good info it makes more people tell me more things. But of course the act of separating the truth from the fiction gets tougher.

I don't worry about Sony tracking down my sources because, frankly, there's too many suspects. I'm very friendly with many people there. Heck, Adam Boyes follows me on twitter... MAYBE IT'S HIM! Nicolo Accordino is a longtime friend and is the reason i'm in the Knack friends list. I'm mentioning him by name, of course, because he doesn't tell me shit. But if sony was to start looking into who I talk to at sony it would include many people - some of whom talk and some of whom don't. So I don't worry about it too much. At the same time, there's some fairly huge info that I know that I don't post because it is the type of thing that would get far, far too many eyes on me. I get really uncomfortable when i stumble across some random gaming site that cites me as a source. When that shit happens I start to worry about my friends.


I would like to work in the industry. I've worked in human services (taking care of autistic adults) for 15 years now and am a bit burned out. Gaming is obviously a passion and I feel like I'm a talented writer and good with messaging. I talked to Sid Shuman about the social media specialist spot that opened up a few months back but he wanted someone with media experience (and hired Clements...). I tried to convince Adam Boyes to hire me even though I have no experience in dealing with third parties... he politely declined. I'm near NYC so I keep hoping a spot opens up at Kotaku. But as of now... i'm just a dude with a podcast and a blog and an insane addiction to neogaf.
