"Its funny and that's all that matters" really isn't that much better as a defense
It seems plain as day to me.
What's funny about racial humor a century ago? "that minority has laughable traits"
What's funny about racial humor now? "Racism is laughable"
The butt of the joke is on a completely different subject.
I always thought she was a parody of white people...
I did not know that about her comedy. Like with Stephen Colbert I know he's faking being an American conservative to point out how dumb those guys are but I never figured this about her.People didn't get Inception and that movie was like 50% exposition.
That's the idea. She's created a caricature of the white person who is completely oblivious to racial issues and then makes them look like an idiot for laughs. The joke is, "I can't believe that some white people are so oblivious and say shit like that in this day and age." The joke is at her, her character's, expense.

I've seen a lot of her standup, and she doesn't really have a "setup" for these kinds of jokes. She usually uses them as buffers between longer jokes. She just puts on the "valley girl" voice and says something awful in a sentence or two and moves on.I did not know that about her comedy. It appears there is an directly proportional relationship between A) how many people are offended at a joke and B) how funny I think that joke is.
Who are you talking to here? Who's not doing this?Amy Schumer shouldn't have to defend herself, but I'm glad she did. Like Noah, C.K., and MacFarlane - hyper liberals who have nothing better to do go to the airwaves, blogs, and Twitter are utilizing their self-appointed heightened sense of morality to fuel some idiotic backlash.
Look, if you don't find an act funny - feel free to be a critic. Everyone is. Then simply stop watching.
There is far more thought put into these criticisms than you're willing to accept. Almost every criticism I've seen, both here and in links around the Internet, understand racial vs racist humor and how to craft a responsible yet irreverent and "offensive" race joke. However, using racial sensitivity as the as the sole barometer by which entertainment is worth tearing down or not is narrow minded. Doing so makes you no different than the suburban housewives with nothing better to do than write to ther local FOX affiliate about Bart Simpson.

Kill comedy. PC crowd won't allow for it any more.
So a bunch of old bad jokes that play on stereotypes? Yeah I don't get her appeal, none of that shit was remotely funny or clever.
The issue is likely that she's not always in character like Colbert is, she can shift in and out but if you pay attention you can see the shift pretty clearly. It's not the sort of thing you can spot in a short youtube video.

I get what she's doing, but that "consensual" joke could use a lot of work.

Yeah that's the motivation. Damn all those racists.Look at the crowd. Her appeal is to white people who are glad they can laugh openly about racist stuff.
What difference does it make if people criticize a bad joke even if the comedian's otherwise on point with their acts? You said people should criticize. That's what happened. Someone who writes for the Guardian wrote an editorial. Witch hunt, lol. What this essentially boils down to is racist jokes are not funny...unless they are to the critic. Which is what I'm saying. I'm just commenting on the way hyper liberal critics love a good witch hunt often over one joke, even if the comic has a 90% chance of being just as liberal and tells controversial jokes their entire career.

Yes, I said people should criticize. What my problem is the inconsistency and overreaction to blue comedy. Suddenly morality becomes the primary issue (not the joke) when the act doesn't seem to land. It really is to the point to where there are witch hunts, yes. Witch hunts. On top of what Schumer is responding to, when Noah's being told by hyper liberal commentators via blogs, Twitter, and TV that he shouldn't take Stewart's chair due to a single joke - I call that a witch hunt. Or when Louis C.K. is called a Misogynist Bigot - I call that a witch hunt. When Seinfeld (a relatively clean act) takes heat over race remarks.
It really is liberals cannibalizing each other. It becomes unnecessarily political.
So when the Guardian posted a single article criticizing a comedian, they were overreacting and going on a witch hunt?
I'll say what has to be said many times in every thread:
the most outrage over this subject is coming from people who defend the comedians. This wouldn't be as big as it is if one single article wasn't blown out of proportion.
Lord knows, the criticisms have destroyed Schumer's career.
That was never the point.
Then what is the point? That her being criticized is unfair?
Agree. Chappelle tackled more offensive material and did it funnier. She really isn't funny. That Chapelle male rape joke is far more controversial, but you know he's actually funny and stuff. Her jokes are lazy, but nothing to talk about.

Way to get it totally wrong bro.Look at the crowd. Her appeal is to white people who are glad they can laugh openly about racist stuff.
She calls out a series of tactless jokes Schumers made, including the line, I used to date Latino guys. Now I prefer consensual
Dr. Patton said a few things that surprised me. For starters, she said shes not a specialist on comedy or humor. While she does enjoy comedy she told me that watching comedy isnt something she gets to do often.
Despite seeing the quotes out of context, and without the benefit of knowing anything about Amys comedy, she was comfortable making judgements about whether Schumers comedy was or wasnt racist. She also was comfortable deciding whether Schumers audience was or wasnt racially diverse (she characterizes Amys following as predominately white).
And so when I kind of looked at some of the coverage on Schumer, I initially thought meh. This woman is joking. You know, myself and a lot of people are still grieving the lives of those people in Charleston.
But then I thought about Donald Trumps remarks and then the fact that a few days later Dylann Roof stands up in a church and before shooting nine people says, taking over my country youre raping our women despite the fact that most of his victims were black women. And then it was Schumers comments about Mexican men and rapists. And I thought, see, thats when I had to say something.
Patton has made presumptions regarding the racial composition of Schumers audience, and she has also made presumptions about the effect Schumers comedy has on her audience. Those presumptions are made without any real information, and seem to be based on nothing more than speculation and her own social media following.
Based on the images that Ive seen, photos of her again, I have not watched any of her videos but if I look and I see a predominantly white audience that tells me something right there. And based on what Im seeing on social media and I have a huge social media audience myself, most of the black people that are commenting actually all of them that Im seeing have been reacting very negatively to her. So that tells me that shes not very popular among people of color. The vast majority of people of color who watch comedy dont watch her. They watch the Queens of Comedy or the Kings of Comedy
I asked Dr. Patton how she would feel to find out that people of color laugh at these jokes. She told me that there have always been all kinds of black people, including those who are self hating, or disagree with affirmative action, or were overseers on the plantations.
Comedians should get a free pass. Russell peters would be out of a job if we take sex, race and stereotypes away.
I guess that's what you get when ask a doctor of history to write an article about a up and coming comic. We really need to start asking people what their humor qualifications are before letting them blather on about who should be offended and who is a "overseer on the plantations."
They don't really need a free pass. Offensive jokes can be great. People just want to know they're not laughing with an asshole.Comedians should get a free pass. Russell peters would be out of a job if we take sex, race and stereotypes away.

A free pass to what? A career with out criticism?Comedians should get a free pass. Russell peters would be out of a job if we take sex, race and stereotypes away.
Well-thought out criticism is fair and comedians don't necessary deserve a free pass from being critiqued, like anyone else who says anything.
However, understanding context before you critique is equally important and LORD IN HEAVEN AT LEAST WATCH THE DAMN THING YOURE CRITIQUING.
