I've recently begun reconsidering the monetary value of comics. Over the past few weeks I've been going to the CBS and buying whatever looks interesting/exciting. It's not unusual for me to spend $20-$30 on purchases, go home and crack them open, and then realize I'm done with all the books in an hour. It was fun, until I did the math.
I spend $60 on 2-3 hours of entertainment in the form of comics. Or I could spend $60 on a 30-hour RPG (hello Mass Effect 3). Or I could spend $4 to rent a 45-minute TV show. Or I could spend $6 to rent a 2-hour HD movie. Or I could spend $15 on a book that will take me 10 hours to read through.
As sad as it is, I think I'm going to have to cut back on comics. I can't abide spending that much money week in week out on something with such a short shelf life. I'll probably just stick with the bare minimum comics that I've consistently enjoyed (Batman, Justice League, Winter Soldier, Secret Avengers, Supergirl, Catwoman, Memorial).
It was fun while it lasted though!

The Marvel app has been my ruination recently too, I started adding up what I've spent in the last couple months since I got the phone and the Galaxy Tab, and stopped counting when I hit $100.
Probably better off buying a website subscription, but its a shame that isn't as 'mobile device' friendly as the apps are.
I'd just started reading through the Civil War saga, buying each title from the Marvel checklist, and that's cost me like $40 already, so I think I need to go about it a better way.

I never put a cost/entertainment hour on anything.
It's total worth to me, and comics easily supersede any other form of entertainment for me in that regard.

I swore off Deadpool comics after Way's 3rd arc. He's a horrible horrible writer and ruined my favorite character. I can't wait for him to be gone from the title.

Comics became my new addiction when I gave up smoking and drinking. I read a whole hell of a lot of comics and still spend far less than I did just on whiskey and going out to bars a couple nights a week. I'm sure they're marginally better for my long term health as well, but I couldn't cite a scientific study or anything. Could I be spending my money on something more productive or saving it? Sure. Do I give a shit? No. I don't think anybody will argue that comics are a shitty bang for your buck value proposition but I get more joy coming home with a stack of comics every Wednesday than I did during all but the first few of my hundred+ hours playing Skyrim.

And that's fine, if you enjoy it and are happy spending money on it, then all the more power to you. But I don't see things that way. To me all entertainment is equal, and it's a question of how much entertainment can I buy with a dollar. That's just how my brain works, and while I love story-oriented forms of entertainment, and I love the characters in comics, I just can't in good conscience keep spending so much money on this hobby.

Is it impossible for a modern comic to go back to the old, verbose narrative style of pre-90s comics? I love new comics and their cinematic feel and fast paced action and stuff, but reading through old 70s X-Men comics and the first Hellblazer trade have kind of given me an appreciation for sitting down with a comic and actually feel like I'm reading something substantial.

True that. Except I don't have an antenna on my TV, nor do I have a public library nearby. What I meant was, I don't have a preference for one medium over another when it comes to my entertainment, so I'm willing to spend money on whatever I think is the best bang for my buck.
Of course I realize you were being somewhat facetious, but I thought I would explain nonetheless.

As a Punisher fan, that run of Punisher comic has been ZZzzzzZZz-inducing. Nothing really interesting happens, EVER. It also features the most typical punisher memes ever.. Theres yet another detective who regretfully approve of what he does, a sassy reporter, another marine who had her family wiped out and bla bla bla.. Even the current punisher max run is kinda dumb.

No, that's Bryan Hitch. And yeah, Rucka's run bored the FUCK out of me. I dropped it ages ago, and I'm picking it up again because its crossing over with Daredevil and Avenging Spider-Man.
If only there were a netflix equivalent for comics. Closest is Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited and it's a mixed bag at best, it feels like eating comic table scraps while occasionally getting a good piece.

Can you not just get a Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited subscription? $60 a year, and it has most of those books plus thousands more. I know it works with the Google Chrome app. Not so sure about an Android phone/tablet.
EDIT: I have been reading comics for over 15 years (started in grade 9) and the few times that I did take an extended break from the medium, it was always due to cash. It's an expensive hobby.

There's quite a bit of good about MDCU, unless you want the new stuff now now now. There's decades of stuff out there, and much like Netflix - if you aren't looking for first run stuff immediately there's a lot to enjoy.
It's by far the best model for digital comics along with Archie Digital, and more publishers need the monthly fee buffet model if they want to keep at the DRM bullshit.
Fortunately I don't look at the cost of the hobby since it's my favorite hobby ever. It's film without a budget restriction. It's art that you can see and isn't filtered through hamfisted polygon models. It doesn't overstay it's welcome like a video game that may be fun to play for a few hours, but to complete it once you need to suffer through 10+ hours of bullshit.

If not Marvel, then maybe IDW will do an Artist's Edition down the road.

Guys, can you recommend a good origin comic for both the Joker and Silver Surfer? In regards to the joker, one that focuses on the narrative involving his pregnant wife. I need to order these, new and preferably would like to know how many pages they consist of.
Also, any great comics/graphic novels that tell a great backstory of any figure in Marvel/DC

Done. Also picked up the first two volumes of Irredeemable as that looks interesting. Anything else? Also, about that Joker comic, some say its 64 pages and others 23..
Monthlies are too expensive for what they are. $4 a pop is just nuts. I've primarily switched to trades (on sale) and Half Price Books comic bins. I still pick up a few monthlies (it's a hard habit to break entirely), but I don't buy nearly as many as I used to during the '80s and '90s.

I have a lot of friends who use DCB Service and they get the amazon level discount except on monthlies, the only thing is that they don't deliver usually till friday.
But if you love monthlies, there really is a cheaper way to get them and still actually OWN them (as opposed to digital comics)
