FiringSquad just posted my summer LCD monitor round-up. We've got a $350 beating a $600 monitor, and a $700 monitor w/10-bit internal gamma beating them all.

nice roundup.. the NEC definitely sounds like a good panel, if only it was widescreen..

btw any good ways for the end user to do color calibration without expensive hardware?

If you have Photoshop, Adobe Gamma isn't a bad place to start. The software that came with the Samsung and LG monitors were better though. If you don't have either, try
