Congress Deluged with 1.5 Million calls per day coming in, most about DeVos

much love to guek (sp?) for putting me onto 5 calls, please believe i've been hitting rubio's office like i found that dude a spine

Sigh. Ben sasse on Nebraska tv just said most of the callers were paid to bother him. He's supporting devos

WTF? So anyone in power can go against what the people want by claiming any dissent they hear is "paid protestors"????? This country is so messed up...

Even if she doesn't pass the vote, i'm sure Trump will nominate someone worse than her

I honestly don't see how he could find someone worse for this position. I mean, there is probably many other there just as bad, but she's easily at the lowest floor.

I'm honestly surprised it's DeVos and not Sessions or Tillerson that ended up being the focal point for opposition to the entire slate.

I think it's a combination of things. Sessions is very experienced, he's very nice, and he mostly aced his confirmation hearing without a lot of major issues (he's still a racist shit, but it's easier and easier to mask that it seems). Tillerson had a decent hearing, and a lot of people, unfortunately, still think that being a businessman with foreign ties is someone equal to having foreign policy experience, even here at GAF I hear people echo that nonsense (I also don't think a lot of people really understand what the Secretary of State actually does, or how important of a position it actually is).

DeVos, though...man. I mean, everyone has a basic understanding of what education entails, and her confirmation hearing was a massive disaster in just about every way. It's just so incredible how horrible she is for this position on every level. I can see how she got latched onto.

Of all of the dumb fucking people Trump decided to put in charge, she is by far the most dangerous pick.

She will do more long-term damage to this country than anyone else in that god-forsaken hell pit that is the GOP could ever hope to do.

She is dangerous to our kids, and our future. This cannot stand.

Brother, this ain't even the Obamacare battle. Hopefully Republicans are getting spooked.
By a few phone calls? Do you think they're Democrats? They won an election that nearly every pollster predicted a landslide in the other direction. They can and will do anything, and they will get away with it. Not saying people should stop trying, but I honestly don't expect them to suffer any real consequences until 2020, if then.

I'm surprised as well. I think both Sessions and Tillerson have the ability to wreak far more havoc than DeVos, but I'm glad at least something is helping rally democrats. I've already gone through 8 years of this kind of BS with Martinez and Hanna fucking Skandera, trying to sabotage NM's education, though, so maybe it doesn't shock me as much.

I'm worried that so many calls may be crossing the line from free speech into a form of violence. Maybe we need to just talk to these people instead of talking to these people so much?

They don't care. Betsy DeVos is a terrible pick and literally bought this nomination. If Republicans had any spines or a conscious they wouldn't vote for her.

And if my grandmother had a willy she'd be my grandfather.

Ain't happening. Spines and conscious are against traditional values!

If Republicans had any PR sense, they'd pull the DeVos nomination, put in another less batshit and terrible charter school pusher (like the charter school guy who himself said DeVos was unqualified), and claim that they respond to the American people, just to pre-empt any possible shitstorm concerning Gorsuch.

I mean, it's the Secretary of Education. Obviously it matters, but of the members of the President's cabinet that he actually gives a shit about, it's going to rank way below Defense, State, etc.

Hell, at this point, you could nominate another old white guy just to assuage Trump's country club mentality, and I'm sure that pick would be better received than DeVos.

Senators no, they have term. House Reps, absolutely. Ryan and co have to be thinking about 2018 from day 1. Hence why they've backed off the Obamacare fight a couple times now.

I suspect your average voter cares way less about rights for minorities or foreign policy than they do about their child's education.

This is something they actually view as impacting them.

Agreed, and I've mentioned before it's something that would go a long way toward turning my very Republican family members against the Trump administration and possibly their congressional representatives that vote to approve her. Unfortunately they don't care about things like the Muslim ban, suppressing free speech and the press, gutting departments like the EPA, etc. They do care a lot about their kids' and grandkids' education though. Having several teachers/retired teachers in the family probably goes a long way too.

Getting 1 more republican shouldn't be that hard. Isn't there over 200 of them in the senate?
No. There are 100 members total in the Senate, 2 from each state. You may be thinking of the house of representatives, which is the other part of Congress.

Rubio is going to be a lost cause. He's the senator who has the received the most in donations from DeVoss. If he can't find his spine over something he truly claims to have conviction about (i.e., his "party of Reagan" suddenly becoming the party of Russian appeasement), then he sure as shit is not going to suddenly find it at the cost of a stack of cash.

Unless there is a large dissent in the Republican Party and a bunch of them get together and say no, then she is getting through. You don't want to be the 3 only republicans to say no. It would end their careers in Trumps world.

There's already 2 that have said they won't vote for her. You'd only need one more, but they aren't going to get it (more than likely McConnell let those two say they were voting no to appease liberals in their respective states, even though both of them voted to let her out of sub-committee onto a whole Senate vote).

I'm looking forward to all the faith based learning the next generation will be taking part in. I wonder if kids will be praying five times a day.

Agreed. They are only voting no because they know it is going to pass. It's a shot across the bow to Trump. If it actually had a chance of failing, the Republicans would band together. It's stupid politics to gain brownie points in their states.

Oh god, secretary of education, I just had terrifying thoughts about the training of 8 years worth of Trump youth.

Besides Sessions and Tillerson(they're awful too) she is the worst pick by far. Some ultra rich woman that never went to public school, nor her kids.

Pruitt is pretty bad too. Not caring much about the environment it seems, and suing the EPA multiple times yet he's gets picked for it. He couldn't even name anything that he liked about the EPA. Hope he gets denied.

As a father of a 6 year old and a huge proponent of education she and her policies scare the shit out of me. Defunding public schools in favor of private schools that can make up their own bullshit curriculum. Ughhh.

Almost makes me feel bad for DeVos. You're in a group of the shittiest, most evil people in the world, who all get to do whatever they want with barely any opposition, except you. That illiterate four year old who spends his days coming up with ways to ruin people's lives and then crying about people not loving him? Let him do everything he wants, no questions asked.

But not you. You are deemed too stupid.

I think the main thing is that the average American doesn't really have a firm grasp on what most of these positions do or what reasonable qualifications for them are. Most voters probably couldn't tell you what the last Secretary of any given post did or said (Clinton aside), and probably couldn't elucidate a set of minimum qualifications for a prospective candidate in a Secretary of State or similar position.

However, with DeVos the average voter is probably more qualified for the job than she is, and has at least a vague enough concept of what the job entails that they know or at least strongly suspect as much. That makes it an entirely different ball game.

There are lots of people who like her. Her lack of experience with the system is an asset to them - she brings a fresh and outside perspective. Her money is also an asset - she isn't susceptible to the same kind of corruption as people who aren't financially secure. She works is business - this means that she is better able to bridge academia and reality.

I don't like it but that's how it is. NeoGAF is an echo chamber that will be surprised when the Republicans crush the Democrats even more in 2018... Trump supporters are absolutely thrilled at everything that's happened.

No, she deserves no sympathy from anyone.
Until they're dragged into the streets.
With the way things continue to escalate, I honestly wonder what will end up breaking the camel's back.

She didn't and doesn't want the job.

There was this one guy who did want the job though. He was a lot like Warren. He even ran in 2016. I forgot his name though. Probably no one important, amirite?
Oh hey look, we're back on Bernie Sanders in another thread that has nothing to do with him.

You people have learned absolutely nothing and have become as insufferable as Trump's supporters.

So you mean she is everything that is wrong about education?

Money avoiding corruption? I guess all those donations to Republicans to smooth this confirmation is not corruption?

Why don't you not pretend you aren't a Trumper by using them in the third person?

The points by the poster shouldn't just be thrown out. GAF is on the left, there are no questions about that. Just because GAF is on the left does not mean that the criticisms of DeVos aren't warranted. They are extremely warranted.

Also, I don't see 2018 being super easy for republicans as long as this anger keeps up.
