Congress Deluged with 1.5 Million calls per day coming in, most about DeVos

There are lots of people who like her. Her lack of experience with the system is an asset to them - she brings a fresh and outside perspective. Her money is also an asset - she isn't susceptible to the same kind of corruption as people who aren't financially secure. She works is business - this means that she is better able to bridge academia and reality.

I don't like it but that's how it is. NeoGAF is an echo chamber that will be surprised when the Republicans crush the Democrats even more in 2018... Trump supporters are absolutely thrilled at everything that's happened.

I know this all worked out for trump, but I just can't wrap my head around "Look at how rich they are, they are above corruption!" without understanding that they are the corrupters.

WTF? So anyone in power can go against what the people want by claiming any dissent they hear is "paid protestors"????? This country is so messed up...

Yup, we elect people to represent us but they don't have to. Make these assholes pay In Nov '18 if Republicans win big in '18? Well..

Also, I don't see 2018 being super easy for republicans as long as this anger keeps up.

In terms of the Senate, the problem is that there are a few vulnerable Democrats up for re-election (basically Dems in states that went for Trump), and not as many vulnerable Republicans. It's going to take the Republican party doing something pretty stupid (and given that it is the Republican Party, that is entirely possible) to swing things enough for Dems to take back the Senate. Now, if the base can stay fired up for the next 2 years, and we can do a better job of finding local candidates, the House could be in play.

This is actually the canned response, it's not specific. Democrats are more educated around the picks due to the nature of the situation, and the aware Trump supporters that I do know do not support her (but they work in education). At work (Trumpland) no one knows anything about her except for the possibility of bringing business sense to the white house. So yes, it's steeped in ignorance versus actually knowing what she stands for. They all went to public schools (so do their kids), and if they knew her history they'd have doubts (but would likely still support and hope for the best since it's a Trump pick).

Calls are working. A nominee having to squeak by on the Vice President's tiebreaker vote is *humiliating* and historically unprecedented.

Results are the same until we get a change in government.

Doubt the "swing voters" pay attention to this stuff but we'll see.

"This is working"

Sure it did.

People always say that when they disagree the best thing to do is to contact your representative. It's finally happening and I doubt that Republican reps will bother changing their vote because fuck the people they represent.

The protest against DeVos was never going to be measured by getting her rejected. Anyone who thought that would happen was just being naive. The real measure is the response to her confirmation as well as reminding senators that people are paying attention

Yep. And reminding them people are going to remember this and be out for blood in 2018. Even with the hard house and senate races, Democrats are going to make big gains by the way things are going.

Yup.

People need to realize that calling does jack shit. Theyre in power right now, a phone call isnt going to give them a conscious.

It will remind them there is a big chance they won't be in power soon. It's a fine way to speak up. Them ignoring the concerns of citizens is going to bite them in the ass hard.

I don't care how humiliating it is, we are still stick with her. Fuck these small victories this is horrific and we have the majority on our side.

So in the end the calls meant nothing. Democracy is fucked.

Important to keep calling though because then when people realize their own reps aren't listening to them those assfucks will get voted out quick.

The response of the current administration and the republican party to people preassure and protests has been "fake news" and "we don't care" basically.

Preassure only works when the leaders care about it. They know they have half of the country against them, they don't care.

Yeah, I doubt it. They'll gerrymander and suppress the shit out of the next elections.

You can't Gerrymander the Senate. You can't gerrymander at all if you don't have control of the state legislatures. So instead of complaining, why don't you try to get bipartisan redistricting laws passed, and voter suppression laws repealed.

Clearly, you must be joking. We've had appointments outright denied before.

No, it's actually the truth. Usually candidates never even made it onto the floor, and a vote to confirm a cabinet position has never in history been this contentious.

They don't care because they haven't faced any consequences. Today's GOP senators only fear report cards from right-wing interest groups.

but the reality is, Democratic voters hold a lot of power, even in deep red states. Ask Thad Cochran. They need to be reminded of this fact, and that is where calls help. None of this matters unless people actually vote in 2018 (and the local elections before then), but we'll see

Yup.

It broke two of them. And it's important for people to see not just that they're voting for awful shit, but that they're willfully ignoring the will of their constituents when doing it. That's important for making the case to vote them out in 2018 and 2020. It also slowed things down. Every extra day they had to spend on DeVos was time not dedicated to doing other awful shit. At this point in 2009 Obama had almost his full cabinet in place and had already signed major legislation.

Also, it's just good to make their lives hell. Don't let their office have a second of peace, don't give them space to breathe.

Clearly, you must be joking. We've had appointments outright denied before.

Nope. People have withdrawn from consideration before due to pressure, but no one has actually gotten to the vote and come this close.

There was literally a big blow made against gerrymandering made a week ago.

I'm noticing you posting defeatist rhetoric in every single thread, even with positive news. Please stop.

The calls absolutely mattered. Never before has a VP had to step in on a confirmation. This entire thing is a massive embarrassment for the GOP.

Exactly.

Oh just you wait. Next up: a concerted effort to repeal the 17th amendment.

Of course the calls didn't matter, the GOP doesn't actually care about their constituency. They get the vote from them because of propaganda regardless of how much they harm the people they represent. The USA's government is breaking more and more every day.

I do feel like these call mattered still. I believe our base is now fired up again in a big way, and DeVos will be a powerful focus point for protests and other actions to fight back against this administration.

So yeah, she got in, but I believe this will fire people up in a big way to Primary these fuckers when they've got the chance.

PEOPLE!

Listen.

2018

2018

There will be a reckoning.

Remember every day: Dems need 24 seats to win back the House; almost exactly that many Republicans hold districts that voted for Clinton.

She was always going to get confirmed because the GOP does not care about what the people have to say. They have power. They will just push through w/e bullshit no matter what. But at least they know people are watching their bullshit right now.

It won't because Democrats don't vote in midterms, and conservative voters have routinely and historically shown that the Republican party can shit on them, destroy the economy and their local community and the voters will still fall in line and vote for Republican nominees.

Democrats don't vote in Democratic midterms. Republicans won't vote in Republican midterms. The only time in recent history the opposing parties haven't gained during a midterm was in 2002 and 1998, both for obvious reasons. Unless a major terrorist attack happens, expect democrats to gain.

The thing about the next four years is that Trump's gonna get some W's, big and small. The question is will he pay any price in public opinion for them?

Imagine a world where the left collectively sighed on November 9th and said "gg guys, see you all September 2019 for the pre-primaries!"

Trump's got historically low approval ratings and is having to fight congress on routine stuff. His biggest Executive Order is snarled in the courts.

Alternatively, picture it like the French/Polish/Yugoslav Resistance. Yeah they won and there's nothing we can do about it, but we can sure as heck upset the Axis Powers and keep everything askew until the Allies come.
