Cops shoot and kill man holding toy gun in Walmart

What does 'alarming other customers' mean? Was he pointing it at them and saying "bang"? But even if you're completely blameless and you're holding what appears to be a deadly weapon and the cops tell you to put it down - put it down. You can go to the civil rights group after you don't get shot.

I see nothing in the article stating he was pointing it at people?

Another article:

April and Ronald Ritchie, of Riverside, told WHIO that they were in the hardware department Tuesday around 8:20 p.m. when they saw a man walking the aisles carrying what they thought was a real gun, pointing it toward the sky. The couple called 911.

The couple said they followed Crawford at a safe distance. "Anytime I saw people walking his way, I would get their attention," April Ritchie said. She said the man was cradling a cellphone between his left ear and shoulder while he messed with the rifle.

"He just kept messing with it and I heard a clicking," April Ritchie said.

Ronald Ritchie said Crawford "was just waving [the gun] at children and people...I couldn't hear anything that he was saying. I'm thinking that he is either going to rob the place or he's there to shoot somebody.

"He didn't really want to be looked at and when people did look at him, he was pointing the gun at them. He was pointing at people. Children walking by," Ronald Ritchie said.

The station reports that police arrived and told Crawford to put the weapon down. The Ritchies said two shots were fired, knocking the suspect backward. When Crawford reportedly tried to get up, he was tackled by an officer who then handcuffed him and turned him on his back.

It's amazing how many people missed this. Gaf gonna' gaf,

I see nothing in the article stating he was pointing it at people?

The article basically made it sound like they didn't even give him a chance to comply with ANY request before being slaughtered. I hope those morons who called the police are happy.

Also, Walmart should probably change their policy of selling these guns by not selling them at all or at least saying "we will put this in a box for you and meet you up front so you can pick it up."

Context. Those people aren't waving the guns at people.

If he was pointing it at people, as it says, then he got what was coming. It's happened a lot here in the UK over the years. It's why they tell cosplayers to be careful.

You can immediately comply with everything police tell you to do and still get shot. There are as many examples as you could ever want posted on this forum alone.

Where in the article does it say he was pointing it at people? I read it twice, it never said anything like you are accusing him of.

Cops, man. Fucking ridiculous.

That said, I can't help but think that some of this will fall back on the manufacturer. According to that article, the victim had a MK-177 BB/Pellet Rifle, which looks like some variation of this:

Why BB/Pellet guns are allowed to be sold looking like this, I have no idea. All "toy" guns or "non-lethal" guns (such as this one) should be sold in bright colors to clearly distinguish them from real guns.

In this situation, does it matter? Ohio is an open carry state.

probably shouldn't have been black while holding a toy

racists gonna racist

"and the police start shooting and they said ‘Get on the ground,’ but he was already on the ground because they had shot him"

hmm. I think there might be something wrong here, but you never know in America
It's worryingly common for the witnesses in these situations to say that they shot first and asked questions later. The police reports always disagree though.

Ban these fucking toy guns already.
I'm going to have the biggest fucking grin on my face the day that the US bans toy guns before real ones.

Wait, so the source is the people that called the cops on him?!

Yeah, this needs to change some Walmart policies.

Seriously?, your calling people who to them saw a man pointing a gun at shoppers (including children) morons for calling the police?.

This is just a tragic shooting because of toy guns looking like real weapons. There is no way to know if someone brought in a real weapon to the store and then masking it as a "toy gun". No, the problem is the fact that there are childrens toys and soft-air guns looking like real ones. You don't disarm someone non-lethally when they're holding what looks like to be a high-caliber rifle.

I think you are targetting the wrong things for bans.

Wait, so the source is the people that called the cops on him?!

Yeah, this needs to change some Walmart policies.

Why is it Walmart's responsibility to police this and no the shoppers?

Some of us actually just disagree with your premise that waving a toy gun around in the store you bought it deservedly leads to being murdered.

If someone waived a believable replica of a gun at me in a threatening manner you best believe I am more than legally justified in responding with deadly force.

Heard about this a few days ago and the fact more has not come out given that Walmart most likely caught it all on security cameras tells me there is way more to the story.

It's amazing how many people missed this. Gaf gonna' gaf,

What the fuck is this shit? That information is not in the article in the OP. It's from elsewhere, and the source is the people that called the police on him. They are not going to present the most accurate tale. Take that GAF gonna GAF bullshit and get the fuck out.

Why is it Walmart's responsibility to police this and no the shoppers?

...You probably want Walmart to handle it vs the shopper's discretion

Why are you such a weak anti-justice liberal pansy? He deserved to die. You can't play with toys in a store like that. It has nothing to do with race. He got what was coming, and what was coming was cops interested only in protecting people threatened by an aggressive hoodlum.

Yeah, this needs to change some Walmart policies.

There was also another victim that ended up dying to a heart attack because of the chaos:

BuYN8-WCcAAs4Eo.jpg

Angela D. Williams, 37, of Fairborn, collapsed as she fled the police confrontation with Crawford, and died of what is believed to be a heart attack. According to the Greene County Coroner’s office, Williams was “apparently running from a dangerous situation inside the Walmart store when she collapsed. She was taken to Soin Medical Center where she died at 9:14 p.m.”

Williams was to be married Saturday and had children from the ages of 10-years-old to 18-years-old.

RIP

No. I'm sorry I don't know how to say this without being incredibly blunt. This happened because it was a BLACK MAN holding a toy that happened to look like a gun. Why weren't all those white dudes pictured earlier in the thread holding actual guns shot down in the middle of a store?

The problem is that most likely the reverse is the case.

Yes, I know. That's why I used the term 'brainwashed'. We've seen lethal force as being the first option when they are dealing with 'angry black man'

I was under the assumption that you did have to have 'orange' on the gun because of this exact thing happening in the past.

In this situation, does it matter? Ohio is an open carry state.
Absolutely it makes a difference, especially if the reports he was waving it around and pointing it at people were true. If the gun were easily identifiable as a "non-lethal" gun, then it may have given every person involved reason to pause and reconsider their actions.
I was under the assumption that you did have to have 'orange' on the gun because of this exact thing happening in the past.
I don't think that BB or Pellet rifles are classified as toys because they shoot actual projectiles.

...You probably want Walmart to handle it vs the shopper's discretion

Nope, I'd rather leave it up to the shopper. There are far too many chances for Walmart to be negligent with their own implementation of these plans, and the chances of failure plus the rights of a supplier of goods to sell this kind of product outweigh the chance that some idiot will waive around a toy gun.

Well done.

You've got to be fucking kidding me.

Why weren't all those white dudes pictured earlier in the thread holding actual guns shot down in the middle of a store?

I'm assuming those pictures were taken in open carry states, and I don't believe Ohio is one

Fake Edit: WAIT, IT IS!?

All they would really do is ring you up at a spot, take you to another area with better security at the exit, and hand you your item. It's not really that big of a difference from what they do normally.

I know this sarcasm, but I could totally see Red Chocobo saying it with a straight face. At least one sentence at a time.

How wold it be worse for Wal-Mart to have a "guns only sold inside boxes" policy? Anyone who immediately assumes a black guy with a gun is a thraet in a store that sells guns won't change their thinking because of this.

*Guns drawn and pointed*
"Sir, drop the weapon"
"Of course, officers. It's only a toy, anyway"
"Okay, be more careful in future, it's quite realistic and people thought it was real"

OR

*Guns drawn*
"OH SHIT HE'S GOT A GUN, SHOOT TO KILL. I REPEAT, SHOOT TO KILL."

This is why it's so fucking inexcusable. Words could have resulted in a man not being killed. For fuck's sake, police/America/humans.

Pretty much. Being it was Wal-Mart we should have more than sufficient security footage to determine exactly what took place. What is the process for making that footage public?

First it has to be presented as evidence at trial through a lawful subpoena, and then shown in open court.

If he walked into the store with it I could maybe underrated the paranoia.

But he picked it up in the store FFS.

Also why is it legal to manufacture 'toy' guns that look almost identical to their real life counterpart.

The article in the image is from the Daily Mail, so take it with a pinch of all the salt you can find.

Doesn't Walmart sell actual guns and ammo now?
I'm fairly sure they do, and what this leaves law enforcement officers with is the increased possibility that anything with the appearance of a gun is actually a real one.

I'm assuming those pictures were taken in open carry states, and I don't believe Ohio is one

Fake Edit: WAIT, IT IS!?

Yep, it is. I don't think we see it as much as say, Texas. But a few months ago with that whole go to Chipotle with your guns thing was going around I saw a few (white) people exercising their right.
