Corporations trying to abolish paid sick leaves

I can understand why most fast food employees wouldn't get PTO. That's considered a benefit, and even non-service companies tend to not give benefits to part-time employees or even full-time temps.

If they give PTO, then the push for the rest will follow.

Can I get a 3 piece meal?

2 Breast and a Wing

Yes I'll pay the $0.80 surcharge for switching it

Side Orders?

How about that wheezing cough the cook is having and the runny nose/flu symptoms the girl at the biscuit loading area has

Thankies <3

Fast food companies have fought paid sick leave across the country.

This will be great for the economy! People will show up at work, at restaurants no less, while still sick, and they'll make their coworkers and the customers sick as well, and the later will make their own coworkers sick as well, who will make their families sick as well.

Money saved! Fight the deficit!

And at my job we can take sick days any time, paid. No limit per month or year. And people use them responsibly to my knowledge, so no abuse:)

When there are people lined up out the door for a job, why should you pay someone to sit at home sick? Much cheaper to fire them and hire on the next guy. And then when gets sick just keep moving down the list. Sad little society we have build for ourselves.

Keep going corporations! Keep piling on the bullshit and get people desperate and pissed off! Eventually people are going to start sharpening the poles of their protest signs and your heads will soon be mounted upon them. *shakes fist*

In capitalist America: If you get sick you lose your job. If you lose your job you lose your insurance.
Heck, you lose your benefits if you fall below 32 hours a week on a lot of policies.

It costs more to hire and train someone than it does to pay someone to be sick.

You also get more repeat customers if your food doesn't make them sick.

This policy is just fucking dumb business.

my girlfriend who works in geneva literally went to the doctors, cried, got a note excusing her from work for a month and spent the entirety of that time in dc with me, all while getting paid. by law they're not even allowed to question her on why she was missing work or punish her in anyway as long as there is a doctors note. this isn't unique to her or her office.

just thought i'd share.

One of my best friends works for Yum as a Market Leader, which means he runs about 50-60 restaurants in a large metro area. I almost laughed when I saw that Yum, Inc. had anything to do with this plan to abolish paid sick leave.

Do you guys know how little Yum values sick days? There are literally ZERO sick days for anyone at the rank of store manager or below. In THEORY there are sick days, but listen to how this works.

Two years ago Yum decided that sick days would no longer be built in like vacation days, but would instead be a direct charge against the restaurant itself. Every manager at Yum works a 50 hour week. If they miss one day due to illness, the store is charged for those 10 hours.

Why is this a big deal? Two reasons:

1. Stores absolutely MUST have a positive labor number at the end of a 4 week period. If someone has, say, the flu, and misses 3 days, that's 30 hours, so your store starts in a 30 hour hole. Like anywhere else, Yum schedules to the absolute minimum, so trying to bounce back from that -30 with the labor tables as they are is next to impossible unless you sacrifice customer service OR force other managers to work beyond their scheduled 50 hours.

2. When someone gets sick it is not unusual for the above restaurant leader to encourage them to TAKE THEIR VACATION DAYS so their absence won't bounce back on the store. My friend recently fired a district manager for doing this, but it is NOT unusual.

So what you end up with is people blowing through all their vacation days if their kid is sick OR coming in sick because they have a trip planned and can't afford to blow a vacation day. What's even worse is bereavement is treated like sick days, so you'll have people have a parent pass away and they are pressured to come back to work or use vacation days.

Now if push comes to shove and someone has a hissy fit, they won't be FORCED to use the vacation day as a sick day, but then their whole restaurant hates them because they are working short handed for a week because Sally had a cold. Of course, this only counts for salaried managers. Hourly workers get zero sick leave, but I don't think that's entirely unusual.

It's a nasty, horrible system. I can't believe Yum gets away with it. Especially considering they are serving food to literally millions of people every week.

Trying to? My last one already did. It was called PTO, included sick and vacation all rolled into one slot which is the same amount of time just vacation used to be.

Well, it is to be noted that this is for paid sick leave. There are federal laws mandating unpaid leave, such that you can't get fired for those things.

Right, this isn't about firing people that dont show up for work, it's about not having to pay them when they don't.

What the fuck? America has the least amount of paid vacation days, and now they're trying to abolish being home while ill?

This country seems to be blossoming further into some hilarious nightmare every single day..
while it's tempting to giggle at americas plight while I enjoy my 30 days paid vacation an unlimited sick days, I actually can't imagine living like that at all. What's the point of living in the richest country if you're at work all the time?

I think I'm a bit at odds with the whole 'prove you are the best by working' thing that America has going on.

It's pretty well proven/known that if you're a sick day abuser, you'll fuck yourself out of employment eventually. nobody I've ever met abuses the sick days idea in my 10 years of working office jobs, because not showing up irritates people. On the other hand, when I had tonsilitis the other week, knowing I could take 3 days off work and be paid to rest, well that's satisfying.

Are companies run by monkeys now? Really?

You let people go on sick leave because you don't want them spreading it to everyone else around them!

IF EVERYONE ELSE GETS SICK.

PRODUCTIVITY PLUMMETS.

STOCKS DRIVE DOWN.

ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE.

THE GAYS WIN.

Someone tell me something: Why in the fuck are FOOD companies meddling in the affairs of workers rights? They're there to sell and market FOOD, not influence policies, right?
Because they employ people.

Also... fun fact: the likely lead lobbyist on this is a college buddy of mine. I should ask him what the fuck is up.

EDIT: Interesting... he edited his LinkedIn profile, it still shows his current position with Yum, but no longer lists his past work with ALEC.

Doesn't matter to me, I get 1 week paid sick ,4 weeks paid vacation, 3 floating holidays and I work from home. I take time off all the time, sick, vacation, game release or whatever and my boss has never once, not a single time deducted any of my time from our system.

I'd be shocked if this was true at fast food/cashier jobs. After a day it's hard to screw shit up.

I say let this one go through, as long as those companies are willing to pay for the externalities that they create - i.e. pay for the sick leaves of the millions of employees from other companies that will inevitably occur if they're allowed to pass something like this through.

Maybe I'm misreading this but companies are fighting against laws that force PTO on part time workers. Currently most of them don't have it.

Corporations... just... stop, please. For fucks sake, we're trying to make a living here. How are we supposed to find the time and money to BUY YOUR PRODUCTS

mmmmm, mucus riddled french fries!!! So good.

Seriously, I don't even think that fast food employees and other unskilled jobs will ever get any kind of job security. They're considered expendable and in this country that means one-step up from criminal. A lot needs to change in this country, but I have my doubts it ever will in our lifetimes anyway, but who knows?

I work for a small LLC that doesn't give sick leave. Everytime I tell that to people they wonder how it is legal.

We also have some piss poor number of vacation hours and they denied us time off for Thanksgiving this year.

So yeah I come into work when I'm sick and I don't feel bad when my coworkers get sick.

When are these companies going to start pushing lawmakers to abolish paid national holidays and vacation days? 5-10 years?

well we aren't talking about you are we? we're talking these people in the food industry.

BTW America, this is the kind of thing that results when you frame hardwork and personal responsibility as the ultimate virtue.

"What do you mean you can't work harder? Why do you think you're entitled to sick leave? Why do you think you're entitled to a holiday? Why do you think you're entitled to a life outside of the one we give you? Why do you think you're entitled to anymore than $5 an hour? We pay our indians and chinese less then that, and they do better work for us."

Meanwhile in China

“你的意思是你不能工作更难?为什么你认为你有权请病假吗?为什么你认为你有权假期呢?为什么你认为你的生活以外的题为我们给你?为什么你认为你有权了超过5美元一个小时不到,我们付出我们美国人,和他们更好地为我们工作。“

"You mean you can not work harder? Why you think you are entitled to sick leave? Why you think you are entitled to holiday? Why you think your life other than the entitled us to give you? Why you think you have the right to of more than $ 5 less than an hour, we pay we Americans, and they better work for us. "

These aren't entitlements - they are what society needs to ensure to provide a progressively better baseline for all of us; if progress if to have any substantitive meaning.

Recognize the importance of hardwork - just as you would recognize the importance of opportunity, moderation, balance and healthy living.

They don't need you to buy products, they're rich. All they need to do is keep 99% of the population in enough debt as not to accumulate real wealth.

Because taking sick leave when you aren't sick would be unethical? Also I enjoy my job.

You enjoy your job more than spending a day at the movies with a loved one, perhaps a good kickass meal, or some white water rafting ?

I sure as hell enjoy my job but god dam if i ain't gonna jump to the chance to spend a day doing some crazy shit on a paid sick day.

Wow this sucks for fellow US Gaffers...

I won't be bragging about the situation in Germany, but we have it much better - but we also pay a much bigger price for it.

Nothing new.
My wife's company COMBINES vacation and sick time. So if you get sick, less vacation. If you take a long vacation, you better not get sick.

People who take sick days off when they aren't sick, or just have a cold really annoy me. I go to work unless I am physically unable to.
