Could Black Panther surpass Terminator 2?

Many are questioning the OP's motive for making the thread. I just assumed OP was referring to the impossible hype surrounding it and how it's literally being heralded by some (and repeated by media outlets) as the film that may save blockbusters and/or Hollywood.

Ahahaha, a Marvel movie saving Hollywood. The only thing that could save Hollywood and its blockbuster business would be movies like The Nice Guys or Blade Runner, movies with great or interesting characters and story that would make people want to go to the cinema the next time they go out. The problem though is that Hollywood has basically trained audiences to seek the dumbest, most CGI heavy movies until they're sick of them and stop watching movies at the cinema altogether. They basically sabotaged themselves.

In terms of the complete package of an action movie, nothing touches Terminator 2. I don't know why black panther would even be considered.

That's not saying black panther is or will be a bad movie, but T2, to me, was something special. Black Panther is another Marvel movie.

The concept of wakanda, an african nation being the most advanced nation is certainty something new right one could even argue its touching new grounds that T2 failed too?

Great joke thread but can't surpass that thread back then about Nikki Minaj being the greatest artists of the century.

What ?! lol

I wish it would top any previous Marvel movie, just to watch something good for once, but even that I highly doubt it...

Let's first see if it passes the best of Marvel flair and style, Iron man, first, before it takes on the greatest genre blend of sci-fi action, thriller, and drama.

BP will just be another Marvel movie. Easily digestible, but pretty forgettable too. Even a more popular comic hero (Batman, Spidey, Ironman etc) would be very unlikely to get near T2's legendary status.
T2 had the biggest action star in the world, an R rating, a more interesting/original plot (AFAIK) and prime Guns n Roses on the sound track. I dont think BP will challenge it at all.

But isn’t the idea of the most advanced nation in the world being african quite the opposite of the idea of a safe MCU

Terminator 2 is too high up for most movies to even dream of living up to. Cameron is a top tier film director. His works will not be defeated that easily.

Not even close. It won't pass t1. There isn't a single comic book movie that can touch those. I hope its as good as Logan or guardians of the galaxy though.

But this is probably a thing that changes with generations. There's probably some kid out there who rolls their eyes at my love for the terminator.

My favorite Marvel movies are Guardians of the Galaxy and Iron Man and those don't hold a candle to anything James Cameron has made that I've seen. *Maybe* Avatar. Maybe.

I think in the current political and social climate, there could be nothing more safe. As it happens Black Panter has a good justification for it's setting, plot and concept and I actually think it looks pretty decent (despite the cgi). But there could've just as easily be a hypothetical movie that pandered to minorities and the LGBT community and shoe-horned in a sanctimonious message of equality, and that movie would also be "safe".

I do not know about that, but I really liked this shirt I saw earlier. That's about the only thing I have liked from it so far.

Based on the trailer? Never.

But then again trailers make ~every movie look bad. I can't remember when is the last time I saw a good trailer. In my opinion trailers shouldn't even exist. Or trailers should be done in a more teasery way. Teasers can be very good. They are short and they go straight into showing just a little of what the core of the movie is all about. Trailers are just all over the place. It doesn't help either that in superhero movies the action parts are usually the least interesting for me and the trailers show those parts in the most extreme fashion. Things go fast and it cuts cuts cuts cuts cuts cuts cuts cuts and it's loud. Most often I have no idea what's going on in the action scenes.

Ironically some of the best trailers from recent years have been from mediocre movies:

Have I been missing something about black panther?
From the trailers it looks like a standard Marvel movie, the hype seems to be about the same as for most marvel movies and even the early twitter impressions seem to be in line with most marvel movies (as in most people like it and you get some "best one yet!" comments and stuff like that).

Where is this notion coming from that it's one of the most hyped movies of the last 2 decades and one of the best action movies of the past 2 decades and a movie that's going to change the industry?

T2 has better CGI for one.

Super hero movie fatigue for second

This has turned into a pretty common issue in most recent marvel movies. They use so much CGI that even with their big budgets you start to see the compromises.
Just saw Thor Ragnarok the other day and most of the action scenes just look like a CGI intro for a videogame (the ones with Cate Blanchett in particular)

I don’t get it either. It looks like a standard Marvel movie to me. I am expecting a good movie that I will completely forget about a day later.

come on guys, can you guys at least keep the possibility of it happening alive?
Is there any grounds to believe that BP will be significantly different/better than any number of Marvel movies before it?

*Maybe* Avatar. Maybe.
Pocahontas in space still doesn't hold a candle to T2 IMO :)

I recently re-watched T2 and I found it surprising how the effects from back then look more convincing than those bags of CGI punching each other in modern blockbusters.

This is like asking if Infinity War will ever be considered to be on the same cinematic level as Citizen Kain

Mod edit: This thread is not for you. You have been excused from it.

Maybe if it was called White Panther am I rite

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Maybe I've just been blind recently but I feel like I haven't felt or seen the hype that you're referring to?

Marvel movies stick to a forgettable formula that pleases the masses. They're usually enjoyable but never great. I don't see any MCU movie matching T2.

it was a masterpiece of a film

but revolutionary? how

I was/am too young to remember it when it first came out but from what I have gathered talking to people and watching films from that time period, the story telling and effects we're not seen in that capcity.

The effects alone we're mind blowing at the time, and to be fair still outdo similar style effects of today. It pushed movie making effects forward and it could be argued it set the bar for what an action film can and should be.

Let me ask you a question. Why do you think Black Panther will be revolutionary?

T2 was revolutionary because at the time, it brought a level of special effects that had never been seen on large or small screen before. Coupled with great acting, a satisfying story, great cinematography and siund design, and the afore mentioned special effects, it's not hard to see why it's one of the greatest, if not greatest action movie ever.

Here's some links for you to enjoy.

Also, what is Black Panther doing that it is so special? The first Marvel superhero with an African American being the lead role? That was done by Wesley Snipes 20 years ago this August.

And in my opinion, Blade is better than just about every MCU movie out there.

Seeing that CGI heavy clip really killed my hype for this. How is anyone looking at that in post production and thinking it looks acceptable?!

It's a shame too because this is the same director that did Creed and the boxing in that movie looked almost real. I know superhero fights aren't the same as a boxing match but I hope some of the fights looks a bit more realistic and less reliant on shoddy cheap looking CGI

Blade was a pretty great movie that had something the vast majority of Marvel movies don't have, a soul. Marvel movies look like they were made in a factory, Blade looks like it was made by people who loved what they were doing with interesting characters and plot. Also a plus was that it didn't have the unrealistic CGI pukefest that you see in modern blockbusters.
