There are obvious visual improvements in lighting, cloth physics and animation. Why stop there? Why make the game for 360 and PS3 when Dark Souls is the kind of game that could sell new hardware?
At the start of development, we felt that there was still a lot of potential that remained unused in Dark Souls. I hope this can be seen with the demos and footage that we have released. Our intention was to capitalise on the total potential of [seventh-generation] consoles and deliver the game to fans as soon as possible.

The PC version of the first Dark Souls wasn’t a good port. How did that make the team feel, and what are you doing to ensure that the PC iteration is better this time around?
We understand and accept a lot of the feedback we have received from fans around the world who have played the PC version. We first decided to port over to the PC platform as a result of the petition signed by players around the world. And with our goal to release a PC version as soon as possible, it was a decision to simply port the experience over in the shortest amount of time possible. For the PC version of Dark Souls II, the game development will be based on the PC – we will make sure that the main PC game features are supported and also do our best to attend to a lot of the user feedback that we have received.

What would it take to bring the PC version of Dark Souls II to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One?
We have not put any thought into this yet, so I unfortunately can’t answer at this point.

It wouldn't make business sense admitting to anything until a good 6 months after the release is out on last gen machines (We are now in the current gen with PS4 btw!).

A prepare to die edition will be released by Xmas 2014 imo, much like GTA5 and it's add on packs.

Is this good enough? I say yes, because these games deserve our money and aren't cheap cash ins at all.

When asked about porting to Vita, they seemed pretty against that as well. I think they said that they would rather make an entirely new game for Vita.

They don't seem very interested in porting, and their original PC port shows that.

I'd rather they just get on with making the next game anyway.

Would it be that difficult to port the PC version to the PS4 or Xbox One?

It seems like you have to jump through a lot less hoops to port a game from last gen.

"Yet" :)

I'm going wait! ...and live on hard bread and a salt lick as a form of self punishment.

Come quick next gen version, come quick.

Really dont need a port. From should use their skill and fully take advantage of the PS4s capabilty and create Demons Souls 2.

Why not both? I'm not sure how much time/money it would take to bring the game over to ps4/xbone, but it couldn't hurt. Then again I don't know their budget, so maybe it would be too much to ask...

Also, a demons souls 2 would be pretty awesome.

Since PC is the lead platform this time around it should really be a no brainer. The assets and code are basically already there and people would appreciate a bump to 60 FPS.

I'll be sticking with the PC version myself, but for others' sakes I hope they wind up releasing it on PS4/Xbone at some point. Should be a fairly simple port since they're leading on PC, and easily justified if it gets a good commercial and critical reception.

The director of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls is working on something. Next gen I'm sure.

King's Field V. It's time.

FROM is a modest sized team and they don't over-reach. Remember Demon's Souls was first just japan, then the world. Then with Dark Souls they reached out to another console and then once that was done ported it to PC.

Now for Dark Souls II it will be native for PC, 360, and PS3. Small, incremental steps. That's how they roll. They are taking advantage of that massive last gen. install base rather than dumping them in favour of the new hardware. I think it's really smart.

If DS2 enjoys the same success as the first then I would bet we will see an enhanced edition on the new hardware. It will come well after the fact though, probably a year. They will wait for the new install base to grow and for the reputation of the game to spread.

I rememebr a thread here a few day ago where some dev said that a next gen version would have delayed the release of DS2 by several months. I think there is a chance that it'll come on PS4 in winter but I wouldnt bet any money on this.

Humbug! Oh well.

I recall that someone here said it could be DeS 2, btw Miyazaki is a very talented game-designer (he also directed ACFA wich is the best AC of this gen) so i'm pretty sure that the project will be amazing.

It's obviously coming (along with DS1 IMO). Any excuse about "concentrating on current gen" is BS since a PC version already exists. Any next gen version would just be a port of that build.

From had lots of development time to prep for next gen. Majorly disappointed.

Will it be accessable via ps now?

I have a 360 and ps4. Played all versions on ps3. Wanted to stay consistent.

Sigh. May have to settle for 360 version.

If the PC version is good enough, we won't be needing a next gen version.

Yeap. The game will still be a superior experience on pc because of mods. If FROM does their homework, it will support resolutions higher than 1080p, and better framerate to boot as well.

I hope they went about developing the PC version the right way.

I.e.:
- When they hear "I want to play at 1080p!" they don't go ahead and implement 1080p in addition to 720p, but actually support arbitrary rendering resolutions.
- When they hear "I want to play at 60 FPS!" they don't go ahead and implement exactly 60 FPS, but actually enable arbitrary frame times.

I though this stuff was obvious from an engineering perspective, but recent events have again shown that they really aren't, at least for previously very console-focused developers.

Incredibly poor planning that they aren't already doing this. You can release your game in a dying, over-saturated market exclusively, or also concurrently release it in a new market where console owners are starved for new games.

That dying market is and will be a lot bigger for the foreseeable future.

Im gonna wait for it then. If its not announced by Steam summer sale for Xbone/PS4 then I will bite. Any DS2 dlc should prolly be out by then too.

I think this is likely as well. People have already placed their PS3 and Xbox 360 orders for the game (surely its possible to change the pre-orders, but still). I cant complain, but i'd really wish to have seen a PS4 version at the same date as the PS3 and Xbox 360 version. I dont think i can wait 6 months (and potentially even longer) for a PS4 version.

That dying market is and will be a lot bigger for the foreseeable future.

That argument sure held water for GT6. The only reason why DkS2 isn't being ported to next gen is because the JP studio isn't as big as say Ubisoft/EA. Which can manage multiple SKUs due to huge dev teams.

Haven't even thought about it? I don't believe you.

Would it be that difficult to port the PC version to the PS4 or Xbox One?

It seems like you have to jump through a lot less hoops to port a game from last gen.

I've been wondering this about a few games. DS2, LoS2, and South Park all immediately come to mind as games that could have quick and dirty next gen ports of the PC version and would do extremely well since there's nothing like any of them on next gen consoles.

Sony should have thrown some money at this for a Gen-Exclusive version on the PS4.

Maybe they have...we'll have to wait another week for Taipei

Of course they've thought about it. But right now they're probably concentrating on getting the game finished and released on PS360 hardware. Namco will probably decide thereafter if they want to fund a 4bone port, or shift work on to Dark Souls 3.

I gotta say, as somehow who loved both Demons Souls and Dark Souls, and someone who hasn't really been following the Dark Souls II development process, and was just happy to know it was on its way:

I'm absolutely flabbergasted to learn its not being released on PS4 and XB1.

Like...

what?

i think the main thing here is, the start of this next gen is selling really well alot more than in past i think both sony and microsoft underestimated just how much people wanted new consoles and i think alot of developers have aswell. i bet some developers are begrudging releasing games on ps3/360 now next gen is starting really well. just look at gran turismo 6 sales.

i expect dark souls is in a good place now though because it has a big following on pc. and if 360/ps3 sales are down pc will no doubt bring it back up
