Could Jon undestand Garfield?

It's just, why would you take Garfield out of the frame, you know? The funny thing is that he's talking to a cat. If you take out the cat, you totally change why Jon's crazy.

What about Lyman?

Jon killed him, claiming 'Garfield' had told him to do it. That was the final straw, and what caused Jon to be locked up at the mental institution.

Jim Davis has jokingly explained Lyman's sudden disappearance and long absence from the strip on different occasions either by saying that Lyman joined the Peace Corps and was then never heard from again or by saying, "Don't look in Jon's basement."

It's been established that Jon can't understand Garfield. There was this one short story about disaster hitting the city and Garfield showing that they can speak human language though. He spoke to warn Jon of disaster. Odie can't speak though.
Really? Is this anywhere online?

Fucking lol'd.

what is this
Gesturing. Obviously an owner learns his or her pet's unique body language. Cats meow and purr to communicate but they do other things as well.

In both cases in that strip, Garfield is pointing to the object of interest so I'm pretty sure it's merely a case of "Jon gets the gist" rather than "Jon understands Garfield's words."

You know, reading these Garfield Without Garfield strips side-by-side with the originals ... Garfield isn't really doing much in some of them. It's really just removing a witty remark to Jon's antics anyway.

Of course, there's exceptions but ... yeah.
