I remember thinking it was a funny thing to mention. Who knew a remark so innocuous would snowball into this mess?Jobs said this explicitly in the iPhone introduction presentation.

Dammit this is seriously bad news for consumers. How is anyone going to innovate if they're not allowed to rip-off Apple products anymore? How are we going to zoom in if this one specific method of zooming is patented? Smartphones are over, we're done. Looks like everyone will have to go back to Nokia 3210's. I'm going to donate all my Apple products to charity... No wait I'll just put them in a drawer somewhere so I can use them again when I change my mind next week.
i'm doing the same. Apple is hindering innovation.
Aside from few little gestures every single thing in iPhones was done before. I guess you also think Apple should start from stratch and "innovate" insteaf of using other people's work?
Innovation = copying
People should be thankful that Samsung has to continue to come up with their own designs and ideas. That's innovation, not cloning features and style.

Geez, how did Samsung think they could get away with such blatant copying? It's like putting the damn iphone in front of the mirror. Apple clearly deserved 130 million for this device alone. Samsung probably just stole some iphone shipments and put their own name on it!

Holy. Fuck.
As always, if this is true, the jury's verdict needs throwing out now, before any appeal. Jurors stating outright that not only did they completely ignore the jury instructions, they actually went directly against them.
Groklaw said:"It didn't dawn on us [that we agreed that Samsung had infringed] on the first day," Ilagan said. "We were debating heavily, especially about the patents on bounce back and pinch-to-zoom. Apple said they owned patents, but we were debating about the prior art [about the same technology that Samsung said existed before the iPhone debuted]. [Velvin Hogan] was jury foreman. He had experience. He owned patents himself. In the beginning the debate was heated, but it was still civil. Hogan holds patents, so he took us through his experience. After that it was easier. After we debated that first patent -- what was prior art --because we had a hard time believing there was no prior art, that there wasn't something out there before Apple.
"In fact we skipped that one," Ilagan continued, "so we could go on faster. It was bogging us down." ...
my question you and all you other apple fans, why THE FUCK! do any of you care??
I just don't think that such actions should be rewarded. If you want something in your device either make it yourself and patent it or license it accordingly.my question you and all you other apple fans, why THE FUCK! do any of you care??
Before calling someone an asshole, you should probably read the thread as it was discussed just earlier.Reposted from the other thread because it's so rage inducing.
Holy fucking shit!!
These asshole skipped the prior art debate?
Apps aren't in danger. And honestly, if phones are still being sold that aren't 2.3.5+, maybe that will propel Samsung to update them.Because quite a few Android apps still does have bounce back. Plus there's still phones using old versions of Android being sold today.
Why are we discussing bounce back when Android doesn't even use bounce back anymore?

I do enjoy how people point the finger at Apple, instead of the broken fucking system they are forced to operate in.
What do you expect, them leaving money on the table from the kindness of their hearts when competitors are scrambling to recreate their exact products? No.
It's just how the system works, and it's fucked up beyond belief. All apple does is play their cards well.
Samsung would have done the exact same thing were they in Apple's shoes. Every big tech company would.
Yeah, it was just a comparison. Because fuck it, might as well give a patent for that shit. Might as well give a patent for everything people can come up with.
Screw maths. Screw science. Screw innovation. Screw consumers. All hail the lawyers.
No ? It would be like giving out a general patent for interpolation. It's just so mindblowingly stupid that I honestly - and this is not meant to offend you, if it does I apologize - can't believe any sane person could agree with this.
They changed very little, you can pretend to say that everything changed after the iphone was released but you would be wrong anyway.Yeah, the iPhone changed nothing in phone design. lolz.
No Apple doesn't deserve any of this but unfortunately because of how screwed up the patents are, the consumer is going to get screwed.y could get away with such blatant copying? It's like putting the damn iphone in front of the mirror. Apple clearly deserved 130 million for this device alone. Samsung probably just stole some iphone shipments and put their own name on it!
LOL sounds like someone was born after January 2007.They changed very little.
LOL sounds like someone was born after January 2007.
Smartphones nowadays look and operate so much different than they did back in 2006 it's insane. You have to be pretty deluded to have convinced yourself otherwise.
These were considered the "best" smartphones of 2006:

Back then people actually wanted buttons, but Apple wasn't the only one doing things differently.

It was a natural progression of smartphones, and we would have gotten there with or without Apple.
Wow, that OS looks so much like iOS too.

Am I the only person who gets confused when people say the iPhone changed everything? Dont get me wrong, the iPhone was revolutionary, but not in the way people think.
In my opinion the iPhone was revolutionary in two ways, the OS design and the design of the hardware itself. Before the iPhone, I think its fair to say that the OSs on other phones were abysmal; they were (mostly) ugly and for an average user, hard to use. The iPhone certainly did change that.
But when I hear people say things like:
The iPhone changed everything; with the iPhone I can check the weather forecast.
The iPhone changed everything; with the iPhone I have the internet in my pocket and can browse at 3G speeds.
The iPhone changed everything; with the iPhone I can use GPS to get a map of my current location and find local restaurants etc
The iPhone changed everything; with the iPhone I can video chat with my friends.
It boggles my mind. I mean did these people just have no interest in smartphones pre iPhone?
This was the second smartphone that I owned:

As you can see, its certainly not the prettiest looking phone, and the OS does look confusing. Like I said these are two aspects where the iPhone was revolutionary. But it could do everything an iPhone can do.
I know the iPhone has the app store now, which means that you can download an app that adds certain other functionality. But the main things that people often list when discussing how the iPhone changed everything are all possible on this smartphone from 2004.
Sorry for the ranting post, and I do like the iPhone (I even owned the first two), but its just something that (rightly or wrongly) annoys me.
There is literally 0 evidence of this. But hey, if repeating it over and over makes you feel better, the more power to you.It was a natural progression of smartphones, and we would have gotten there with or without Apple.
That looks terrible. Thank god it looks nothing like an iPhone, probably doesn't work like an iPhone and that horrible formfactor never took off.I'll just quote myself from another thread months ago. This pretty much sums up my feelings on the whole "the iPhone changed everything" thing.
I wasn't talking about the OS, and the OS would obviously change with the disappearance of the stylus, again, with or without apple.
Infact, shortly after it was already something like this

Funny, I just showed you one. That phone was released before the iphone, and it wasn't the only one like that. There is literally 0 evidence of this. But hey, if repeating it over and over makes you feel better, the more power to you.
It's hogwash though. Before the iPhone, the blackberry form factor was king. If Apple were as unoriginal, unimaginative, talentless, blatant, and shameless as Samsung, we'd have gotten this instead:

This is HILARIOUS, specially if you combine it with Samsung using the App Store logo in their store's wallpaper.I forgot about this mistake, oh god samsung using ios maps to advertise your phone lol.

EDIT: you would have to be insane to think that samsung does not rip off apple hard, http://samsungcopiesapple.tumblr.com/ has loads of examples.

First - mistakes like that, I doubt are intentional. The graphics department of companies fuck up like this consistently. It's the same with random iOS on their store wall - some intern probably had an array of graphics he just randomly threw on the wall.
That 'blog' has terrible examples - there are much better examples of Samsung 'being inspired' by Apple. The general aesthetic look of their newest phones? no one is going to agree with that assertion - people will make fun of it really.
I think the best indication that Samsung was heavily inspired by Apple was that they used a sunflower on their gallery app icon. Whether or not this is some devastatingly horrible thing they did, is neither here nor there, but it's at least something legit.

For example, look into PDMI - a cable that looks identical to that, I think Samsung made a proprietary modification to PDMI for their tablets - that being said, pretty much -all- 10' tablets have similar cables. This is what I mean about bad examples.
Look into it if you don't believe me, I think the HP tablet used micro-usb - but the cable makes charging the thing super slow.
Copying is inspiration now?First - mistakes like that, I doubt are intentional. The graphics department of companies fuck up like this consistently. It's the same with random iOS on their store wall - some intern probably had an array of graphics he just randomly threw on the wall.

You know the thread's gone to shit when WM6 comparisons start getting thrown. Jesus that shit was horrible.
I'll just quote myself from another thread months ago. This pretty much sums up my feelings on the whole "the iPhone changed everything" thing.
Come on. I'm not saying apple was the first to do a big touchscreen phone. But the software and hardware experience on the iPhone was miles ahead of WM6 devices like the HTC Trinity. It wasn't just some "little gestures" that separated it, as one poster claimed.point: ------>

And yet we never saw samsung phones with clickwheels? I'm not sure what a mockup from an artist who has no idea what kind of tech research goes on behind the scenes has to do with the progression of smartphones towards touchscreens that encompass the face of a device. If Apple were as unoriginal, unimaginative, talentless, blatant, and shameless as Samsung, we'd have gotten this instead:
People will go to some pretty crazy lengths to defend intellectual dishonesty it seems. You know the thread's gone to shit when WM6 comparisons start getting thrown. Jesus that shit was horrible.

Because that's what everyone expected the iPhone to look like. Because that used to be the popular smartphone form factor at the time. And yet we never saw samsung phones with clickwheels? Well, at least you made your level of intelligence pretty clear to meJust ignore that idiot. I mean when your best contribution to the thread is "LOLOL sadsung" it's pretty clear what level of intelligence you're dealing with.
People will go to some pretty crazy lengths to defend intellectual dishonesty it seems.
That's fine, but you were replying to a post specifically on look and feel, not the patents. I find it hard to believe anyone with a fair amount of knowledge likes software patents, especially ones like those covered in this case.Copying means 1:1 imitation. Taking inspiration is seeing features, designs or who knows what and implementing it your own idea. Samsung obviously takes a LOT of inspiration from Apple - does it cross the line? In my opinion, in some places.
Do I think they crossed the line with pinch/tap to zoom and scroll bounce? Fuck no.
