My copy arrived in the mail today. The visual quality is, as one would imagine, pretty stellar. This is my first time watching the show in the original audio too because, although I have seen the series many times, I've always watched in English. It should prove to be interesting.

But Steve Blum IS Spike as far as I'm concerned. Any other voice coming out of that mouth would just be too weird for me.

If they ever did a live action film, I would need his voice dubbed over whatever actor is playing Spike.

First time watching this (after reading all the praise in this thread). Halfway through episode 3 right now... pretty decent but don't get whats so mindblowing about this. And yes I know GAF loves its hyperbole, but still... Still going to continue and see where it takes me.
Note: Only other animes I've seen our Dragonball Z, Dragonball GT and few Studio Ghibli movies.
Wait till to core story kicks in... then it will move to the top of your anime list. The filler episodes also get pretty damn good once the Bebop crew is established.

Bebop is the first non-shounen (think shows like DBZ aimed at primarily at young boys) anime that I watched, and while the ending of the first episode left quite an impression on me, it took a while for me to fully embrace and appreciate the show. I'd definitely recommend sticking with it for at least half a dozen episodes to see if you like the direction it's heading, but obviously it's up to you.

And like TheKaeptain said, the boundless praise for Bebop (which I do think sometimes gets out of hand even though it's one of my favorite shows ever) is by no means limited to GAF.

I thought that too, at first, which is why I must have seen the show about ten times with the English cast. However, after checking out the first episode in Japanese it actually sounds pretty great so I'll be sticking with it for my re-re-re-rewatch.

I know y'all spent years watching the dub on CN and can't accept any other take on the characters, but the Japanese cast is actually pretty great.

O man the feels...I love this anime...man that first moment when I heard Blue...I was just blown away.

And I have yet found any episode of any show or anime that surpassed the joy that was Mushroom Shamba for me.....

Damn it I need to watch this again....

It is good, but I think I prefer the English actors. Faye's Japanese VA sounds especially a little weird to me.

The first few episodes of Bebop I saw were in English but I didn't watch the whole series. A little while later I finished a majority of the episodes with the Japanese cast and it was great.

Since then I've rewatched the series like 3 or 4 times over the last decade and it's always been in English. The English cast is just really, really great. Normally I'd always choose the original, but Steve Blum, Beau Billingslea, and Wendee Lee absolutely nail those roles.

I forget, does the original Japanese have the same "seems that way" jokes in episode 2? Or was that added in to cover up extra time?

Because I usually watch the dub, and that shit cracks me up every time. That and the dog whistle joke.

That has to be there, I mean . . . that scene wouldn't be what it is without it.

I've been thinking about picking up one recently.

Same here, though I'm curious about the 105 as well. It might be a bit overkill for the home theater setup I have in mind. Don't know.

Re: language preference

I owned the series as a box set on VHS before it aired on CN. It was Japanese w/English subtitles, so that's what I'm used to.

Seems that way.

That scene cracks me up every single time.

I crack up every single time when
Spike is following Hakim chasing Ein, and Hakim jumps over the game table of some guys, while Spike can't even be arsed to jump over and just rams through it screaming GANGWAY. Absolutely fantastic timing and voiceover, soooo good

You haven't lived until you've seen Bebop. I planning to show it to my mum. She thinks anime is immature as usual with most parents. I'll show her!

Always loved that rendition of Ave Maria.

Bebop is a scifi thing though, so if she doesn't like Firefly or Battlestar, she might not dig all the space stuff and action. Maybe show your mum Miyazaki first?

Plus, if your hangups are with anime and science fiction, the first episode of Cowboy Bebop probably isn't going to change your mind. It's a neat little contained story, but it's essentially a violent Western/crime thriller with a bunch of fights and then a chase.

A lot of talk about a potential US Bluray release in this thread, do we know if it is being worked on or is a just a wait and see if they decide to do it at this point? In the meantime I should probably buy the movie on Bluray, just never felt like it though because I wanted to wait until I could get the complete series on that format.

My favorite episode is "Mushroom Samba". The humor in it was far beyond anything I had seen in anime.

A friend of mine made me a VHS tape way back in middle school with some of his favorite episodes to introduce me to the series. I wore the thing out, and Mushroom Samba was my favorite episode at the time. I haven't seen Bebop since before 2000, save the movie and I still remember that episode in particular.

Cowboy Bebop is a show that gets better as it goes on. Not because the quality of the show increase (though, it does), it's because you gain more insight about what the show is attempting to accomplish. Seeing all the themes and threads tie together as it comes to a close is amazing.

People tend to rave alot about the later episodes but the very first ep still resonates a lot with me. I always get emotional at that ending. Such a great way to open the series.

They are not. Aniplex is behind the TTGL BD.

As much as I want to own TTGL I never will because of those assholes.

Back to Bebop, I feel that the show certainly starts strong but it becomes much much stronger once you have watched the entire series. It feels perfectly "circular" in a way where the little touches really matter, such as the first scene in episode 1 alluding to Spike's character.

Pretty amazing quality. Too bad it's not made in 16:9. :/

I'm fine with it. It wasn't intended to be 16:9 and if they tried to make it that it would A) throw off the precise compositions and b) require a ton of new drawings that had to match the old ones or c) the loss of the top and bottom of the picture which would definitely do A ontop of loosing a shit ton of picture.

edit: or did you mean in the first place? because if so I agree.

Holy shit, catching up on the last page: the UK blu-ray is region free??? I may have to order this shit after all if that's true.

edit: nevermind...just read what Anime Limited said about it being a mistake =[

god damnit, don't these companies want my money?

YES!!! Subbed

Easily one of the best animes of all time. The feels bros...them feels. I have never been so jealous of UK as I am now.

Part of why i love Bebop so much stems from the fact that it is head and shoulders above the rest of televised anime. As an avid film and television watcher, watching other anime (evangelion, gits:sac and a few others) makes me cringe from the bad dialog, poor acting, and shoddy needlessly complex scripts. Now whilst they're decent, and definitely entertaining, they're teenage fare, lets face it.

Now bebop, i could show that to my girlfriend, my mates, my family, or others and if they actually got through a few episodes i'm certain they wouldn't think i was a complete loser. It's up there with The Wire, and The Sopranos for me, its that good. It feels like a living breathing show, like it could be translated to a television show effortlessly, and would probably be better than most sci fi shows out there.

And i am fucking pumped for this boxset!

Bingo. Exactly how I feel too. It's a very "un-anime" anime.

16:9 in the first place.

Finished the last 3 episodes in a row last night.

I thought Champloo was better in places, but Bebop really has the better pay off.
Also, wtf at the Feng Shui episode. The only one I completely blocked out, I didn't even have any kind of dèja-vu watching it :lol

First time watching in English. I thought Jett was voiced kinda awkward (and some side characters), but the rest was pretty good. Faye actually sounds like a woman, while the Japanese one is squeaky girlie actress #78230543.

Sorry for doing this but just got back after vacation and seeing this release.

It looks from skimming this thread that the UK bluray release is region free? So if I order from amazon.co.uk it's all good?

First batch were region free but the distributors then announced that it was a mistake and that the next batch (and Part 2) will be locked to Region B.

This thread got me googling as to whether Watanabe would be making a new series anytime soon, knowing full well the search wouldn't turn up anything... and it seems he's working two new shows?! Holy shit!

Yeah, Faye is excellent in the dub. And I actually enjoyed Jett's English voice actor a lot also.

Basically everyone is good in the dub I think.

I never liked Champloo as much as some people. It's way more inconsistent than CB in just about every area. Which is kinda weird given that samurais and hip-hop are typically my shit. It got too weird too often for me. Great soundtrack though. Shiki No Uta up there with Real Old Folk blues for me.

Can't imagine watching CB in anything but english haha.

I always felt Jett in particular was better in the dub because they actually casted a black guy.
