It's cost around $38 to buy on Amazon UK. When I bought the Harry Potter Bluray collection from Amazon UK it arrived pretty fast to the US (1 week).

That's still cheaper than most animes here in the states. So is it totally confirmed to be region free?

If I wait for the frame fix, they might region lock and it'll never make it to the US. If I buy now, they might still release the fixed version without region locking, and we still might get a US release....tough calls to make

I'm tempted to import it too, but what guarantee is there that the second box set will also be region free?

It's weird. It says region 2 on the back of the box.

And the review says region B
Media: BD 50 x2
Region: B
Running Time: 2:51:35 (Disc 1), 2:27:46 (Disc 2)
Video: MPEG-4 AVC
Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (English & Japanese)
Subtitles: English (White – Text), (Blue & Green – Songs)
Resolution: 1920×1080 (1080i)
Aspect Ratio: 4:3
Frame Rate: 23.976 fps
But people over on the forum Blu-ray.com confirmed its region free.

That is not unprecedented right? To do that in a second run? Because I can see that happening. Super surprised this slipped. I don't even know if it was intentional.
Seen it happen. Tartan got their ears boxed when they released the Battle Royale set region free -- anything after that first press was restricted; distribution contracts, especially with Japanese companies, almost always stipulate region coding. So if these discs are truly region-free, now would be the time to snap them up because it will be fixed. Why would a US distributor want the same-language competition? And Sunrise wants to license everywhere they can, brings in more money for their property.

PS: Cowboy Bebop is ABSOLUTELY coming out in the US on blu-ray. It's just a matter of WHEN. Could be soon, could be a while. The series is way too popular here to sit on a shelf, the licensing will get sorted.

Yeah, if it's region free, that's a bug. That's going to be fixed next pressing, mark my words. US folks should jump in now if they're prepared to accept only seeing the first half on Blu, since the region lock will almost certainly be applied to the second half.

Interesting stuff. Well I contacted them on Twitter to see whats up. I'll get back with the reply if I get one!

the soundtrack credits don't appear to cite the original artists, smells like plagiarism

i would give her a bit of a free pass if it was only relegated to cowboy bebop since a lot of jazz is in interpreting other works (i use interpreting loosely as she does a few minor changes to an otherwise 1:1 copy of someone else's song and still passes it off as her own) but she also does it for a bunch of ghost in the shell songs so i think it's safer to say she's just a hack.

even with this scummy revelation about yoko kanno, bebop is still king; it's that good.

You don't work for the company that released the albums so you can't say if she got permission or not. It doesn't matter either because plagiarism is taking an exact copy of an artist work and calling it your own. You don't have to specify on the cover that you used anyone's work. All that matters if it was licensed. Also, this isn't like will.i.am stealing some random dudes music from online. She samples/rearranges some major work so I don't think she is trying to pull a fast one on anyone.

I think Funimation was speaking recently about releasing the Bluray in the US. It probably won't look like the UK packaging though.

Is Funimation like the sole US anime licensor/distributor now?
They're the sole "big" one, I guess, but there's still Viz (who is moving more into non-manga stuff as evidenced by a recent episode of ANNcast), Aniplex, Discotek, Right Stuf, NIS, Section 23 (ADV), etc. I guess Media Blasters, Manga, AnimEigo, and some other boutique companies are still on life support (or have been subsumed by media conglomerates) too.

Completely forgot this release. I have to order it this evening first thing when I'm back.

Damn, I really late with my anime purchases these past months; still haven't bought PSG, Penguindrum, that AUS edition of Denno Coil...
The fuck? Dennou Coil got....
Dont toy with my heart

Funimation is the company you want licensing/releasing Bebop, unless you want to pay a kings ransom for it. Aniplex would charge $500 and send out a representative of the company to deliver it/spit directly in your face.

Reading through that blu-ray forum thread, I can't believe someone wanted them to crop the 4:3 ratio on CB! So much detail would be lost in the backgrounds.

Heathens want everything cropped.

edit: I've been holding out for the bluray, so it better come.

lmao. Sad but true. They'd just bring the Japanese boxset which is absolutely gorgeous but expensive. Granted Bebop is worth it but I'd rather pay the $30 or whatever this costs. The packaging isn't too shabby either!

Funimation... They're the ones behind the Gurren Lagann Blu-ray? Fuck them right up the ass.

I've been waiting for a proper Cowboy Bebop Blu-Ray release since the beginning of time... too bad this is region locked, no love for the US market.

Question... How does one go about defeating region lock, have to imagine i could purchase this and run it through some encoding software to strip away the region protection. True or False. I need this.

FOH!
ordering now!
Yea just read through this entire thread...

video glitch
misprint on disc

non-issues in my mind especially considering they are going to give fixed disc to those who request it.

just finished the import purchase on Amazon UK
if a few days that boxset be fly'n so high up in the sky it be cryin'
now it's just a matter of waiting 6-10 days for it to show up.

Thanks GAF for the heads up, total win.

I don't even own anything that's capable of playing blueray discs yet, but I'd be all over this if I had the chance. Loved the series, and would be willing to double-dip.

Also, does it have extras? I love behind the scenes, developer commentary and the like, and the DVD set I managed to get was quite lacking in that regard (I think it had, what, still images with the main characters' bios?).

Great thread or greatest thread? Lucky Brits, wish the Blu Ray release comes to America soon.

PS, you can pre-order the second box through Amazon.co.uk as well for the same price. Apparently it releases on Sept 23rd.

I wouldn't count on the second set having the region free mistake, and once the first print is gone it they will undoubtedly fix the second run.

There's a couple of commentaries, some music videos and a 40 page artbook.

good point.. probably best to wait on confirmation about the 2nd set region lock (or lack of region lock)... though i am sticking with my preorder. If need be i will rip the disc to my HD, strip away the region lock, and burn my own unlocked discs for playback.

well whatever she's doing it tests the limits of intellectual property. cyberbird is the same fucking song as battersea by hooverphonic. same instrumentation, flow and overall production. there was a forum link that is unfortunately now dead that had the grand list of kanno rip-offs and it was something like 50+ songs.

oh well, i digress. yoko's hackiness is for another thread.

Important update for Region A importers.

Hello!

Following up again, a limited number of initial run discs were printed as unlocked and went into boxes by mistake. This was corrected quickly but initial ship outs from Amazon will most likely work but it is certainly not be the case for discs from here on out (this was something that came up before the glitch and was an easy fix, so the next re-print will cover that. So from here on out I'd strongly advise US buyers do not purchase unless you have a Region B enabled player!

The reason for this is our license extends to the UK & Ireland only so while occasionally licensors specify no region contractually we have a long relationship across territories (US, Japan etc) and would never do anything to endanger that.

Therefore all discs as standard are locked down here, not to be ogres but to be fair to partners across the world!

Sorry for hopes being built up over that though too!

Very best,
Andrew,
President, Anime Ltd

I'd hold fire. Part 2 will definitely be locked and any future Part 1 stock will be too. Was too good to be true to expect that Japan would sanction a region-free release of something they only released domestically in December...

I just pulled the trigger on amazon this morning. Wonder which one I would get. I'll just gamble on it and I'll be fine if it doesn't work. I'll get the US version regardless if it ever comes.
