Anti-gay customers refuse tip to server, other patrons rally around him

OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

A 20-year-old waiter provided exemplary service at an Overland Park Italian restaurant, but his anti-gay customers refused to tip him because of his sexual orientation.

As word has spread through social media, other customers are coming in to offer words of encouragement and tip the young server extra.

The man works at the Carrabba's Italian Grill near 107th Street and Metcalf Avenue. His mother also works as a hostess and she was very upset by what was written on the back of the check earlier this week after he waited on a couple.

"Thank you for your service, it was excellent. That being said, we cannot in good conscience tip you, for your homosexual lifestyle is an affront to GOD. (Homosexual slur) do not share in the wealth of GOD, and you will not share in ours," the customer wrote. "We hope you will see the tip your (homosexual slur) choices made you lose out on, and plan accordingly. It is never too late for GOD's love, but none shall be spared for (homosexual slur). May GOD have mercy on you."

The server and his mother declined to answer questions on camera, referring questions to restaurant management.

Carrabas said in a statement that the company does not tolerate discrimination from either employees or guests.

"We embrace diversity and believe in treating everyone with respect," the company said.

However, Carrabas officials would not say what action if any would be taken if the anti-gay couple returned.

The anti-gay message has galvanized support for the server on social media with a campaign underway to flood the restaurant on Friday. Dr. Marvin Baker and his partner had lunch at the restaurant on Thursday and asked to be seated in the server's section.

"I was angry. I said this is not Christian as I know it," Baker said.

Coincidentally enough, the hostess who led them to their seats was the server's proud mother.

"I said, 'We are here to meet your celebrity. The one who was mistreated.' She said, 'That's my son. Would you like a table or booth?' I said, 'Wherever he's serving,'" Baker explained.

Baker served as a pastor for many years and currently leads a Bible study group for LGBT members. He said the couple's behavior was ungodly.

"This does not represent Christianity. I called them Pharisees," he said. "God really loves us. And God does not advertise or promote hate. That is not love."

Baker said the server indicated to him that he appreciated the support. They agreed that gays experience too much rejection and hurt, and that "it is nice to know that someone cares."

There are truly some shitty, shitty people in this world.

Isn't that some form of harassment? I'd sue him, or something. Nobody should be getting up all in your face saying that, worse that its a stranger. Oh, it was written down? Still, that shouldn't fly.

How did they fit that much text on the back of the bill?
They've probably written it on so many checks before that they got really good at squeezing it in.

If someone is fairly effeminate by nature, you generally can make an guess on their sexual orientation and probably be correct.

The Lord helped him.

Bingo. Unfortunately, it is much easier to pick up on whether a younger person is gay simply by their mannerisms these days.

1. How'd they know he was gay?
2. How'd they fit it on the bill?
3. What possessed them to do such a thing?

1) The waiter in question probably exhibited some effeminate mannerisms and the customer made a guess that was correct.
2) Jesus.
3) Jesus.

Ask them to leave? They don't have to serve customers that have caused harm to their employees. That seems like common sense.

Good. Get a better job if you want a tip. It's ridiculous to "expect" that, just go to college and become a doctor or something if you want more money. Obama did it.

They probably don't want to get sucked into a messy lawsuit should the offending party start claiming discrimination based on their freedom to express their religion/speech.

Proud Member of the GAF Anti-Tip And Didn't Read OP Defense Force of not Seriously, that is really cruel to push your beliefs on somebody like that and I usually always tip 20%.]

You almost had me.

Some Christian says god hates gays. Another Christian says god loves gays. I don't know who to believe.

How about the Christians that don't hate anyone? Last I checked, non Evangelical Christians are about love and spreading it, not hate.

What kind of awful handwriting do y'all have that you couldn't fit a couple sentences on the back of a receipt?

Those customers can suck shit. So weird how they're perfectly fine being served by him yet so very offended by his very existence at the same time.

That's a good point. I still think the restaurant would win in a case like that, but it would probably be costly and a huge mess.

I think my favorite part is that they can:

1) Have 'a gay' cook their food (if the cook was gay, I'm assuming they wouldn't have 'turned it down')
2) Have 'a gay' serve their food
3) Have 'a gay' refill their water, drinks, handle plates, napkins
4) Have 'a gay' get paid by this establishment

But when it comes to a tip? "OH LAWD IN HEAVEN, JESUS HAS SPOKEN AND HE HAS SAYETH NAY!"

I mean ... shouldn't they just not have gone to the restaurant at all? This is just cheap mother fuckers using Jesus as an excuse to be cheap mother fuckers.

They were probably GAFers.

How embarrassing all the way around.

Yea, the old codger was a bigot and an asshole, but you don't let those people define your life. By wasting your time and energy on them you are forfeiting your own precious time to nothingness. You let them win.

Waste of time and energy? For all you know the guy simply took some of his free time and put it towards this. That was less a waste of time than discussing the damn thing on GAF.

The only way to fight intolerance is to drag it out into the light, kicking and screaming. He should've reported their names as well.

Yeah, because Jesus would go around spreading hate on the back of a receipt.

Fucking religious sociopaths. I hope they find out one of their kids is gay so they can have a rude awakening to the fact that gay people are no different than straight people, and that if God is real, he isn't obsessed over things like sexuality. Maybe if these people spent more time reading the Bible and comprehending it (and what Jesus actually preached) rather than being a bunch of brain-washed judgmental shitstains on society, we'd have just a little less hatred and negativity floating around.

Love this line from the article BTW:

"This does not represent Christianity. I called them Pharisees," he said. "God really loves us. And God does not advertise or promote hate. That is not love."

So, so true.

Nah, stuff like this needs to be spoken up about. If no one had said anything or tried to stand up for the waiter, that would have been letting the bigots win. By showing people this is wrong and having the Doctor and former Pastor come in and explain how that is not something a true Christian should do in his eyes, it takes a negative experience and turns it into a positive lesson. I appreciate Christians who attempt to promote roots of love and acceptance instead of fearmongering and bashing people of minority orientation, gender or race.

How far is that place from Westboro Baptist? Sounds like something a Westboro member would say, especially given their gratuitous use of the "F" word

Fighting bigots by enabling their bigotry never works.

On one hand, gay rights... on the other hand, giving tips.... GAF-ending paradox has occurred?

Quick, Future Space-Evilore, do something!

How sad. It's really sad that there are people who pretend to be christian who obviously do not follow Christ's teachings. Christ taught people to love. He didn't care if someone was a whore or what they were. He still loved them. These bigots clearly don't get that.
