i thought it was pretty common to have pepper spray as bear repellant

I wish I had known about this tactic before going on my rafting trip in Northern Wisconsin this past weekend. We wouldn't have known what to do if a bear actually approached our camp site. One of the campers slept alone and he heard growling one night.. very loud. I assured him that it was only my tent-mate snoring (it woke me up and I thought 'bear' immediately).. but he wasn't fully convinced.

Whoa, those guys told me to come over there. They called me over to see their new bikes...then the spraying started. Sick bastards.

Wow, they're damn lucky that the pepper spray worked. I've read that other people haven't been so lucky, and that it doesn't work most of the time.
