Danganronpa V3 demo now available

Will gaf do a replay of the first 2 games before the 3rd one? Really want to replaythem but I need some incentive.

I think it was more like Kodaka was sick of the "Hope's Peak" story and shat out D3 from the corner he'd written himself in.

I think it's more that writing an anime with two dozen characters and only 24, 22 minute episodes is very different from writing a 30-49 hour games with maybe a dozen characters and ample amounts of character interaction/development and exposition.

Occam's razor says DR3 is bad mostly because Kodaka isn't an anime writer, plain and simple. He's closer to a novelist. Pretty wild swing there.

the chance that a character I like may die or kill at any time is part of the reason I enjoy it so much.

Yar, it's not merely about them dying. It's about them dying in a bullshit, manufactured manner. It's like there's this death quota and they just try their darndest to fulfill it. This is probably true in every survival story out there, but here the reality show-esque setup makes it all the more obvious.

It just feels so pointless, which I guess is the narratively the point: to inflict the characters with maximum despair to or whatever. Still, it makes me feel like a cruel observer: instead of cheering for them and anguishing over whether they would survive, I'm left with detachedly wondering when and how they'd die. Then I realized I don't want that. I don't indulge in a story just to see people despair and die.

for those that are playing on PC, is fullscreen "lagging" for you when moving the camera ? like the fps counter still says 60 but moving the camera is not really fluid. (this happens sometimes tho, most of the time is fine)

Yeah, the audio mixing is pretty bad on the PS4 version as well. That said, graphics and framerate are superior.

But for $20 more? For a VN? Eh.

After getting a feel for each character in the demo, this is how I expect the game to turn out (I don't remember anyone's names besides Kaede's, so I'll just refer to them by their talent):

Kaede - Survivor; unless this game is totally screwy lol.
??? - Murderer; most likely to survive to late game and to be the final murderer.
Entomologist - Victim; (general DR spoilers)
these burly types never live lol.
Artist - Victim; (general DR spoilers)
usually these super-annoying types are dead by case 3.
Maid - Victim; she's too cool to be a survivor. :<
Cosplayer - Murderer; (DR2 spoilers)
serious Mikan vibes here, especially with her self-berating.
Inventor - Survivor; can't really picture her being anything else. Too hung up on her own arguments to be a competent murderer, but probably not naive enough to be a victim.
Anthropologist - Survivor; I really don't like this guy, but he doesn't seem to be the killing type. He's also competent and unlikely to be a victim.
Supreme Leader - Murderer; the penultimate one, most likely.
Child Caregiver - Survivor; although is also likely to be a victim.
Robot - Survivor; (general DR spoilers)
I can't picture him murdering anyone and we already had a robot victim. I can see this guy being the "companion" character to Kaede like Kyoko and Chiaki were.
Tennis Pro - Victim; wins the "Most Likely to Sacrifice Self for Others" award.
Aikido Master - Victim; (general DR spoilers)
these sporty types have been too immune to dying in the previous games. I can't picture her as a murderer, though.
Magician - Murderer; solving a magician's trick is too good of an opportunity to ignore.
Detective - Murderer; watch this guy not last two cases. I'm totally calling this.
Astronaut - Survivor; I'll be optimistic and believe that 6 people will live, and he's the last one I can consider surviving.

Now, in terms of who I would prefer to live to the end of the game (tiers are unordered)...

"You gotta live!" tier

Maid
Robot
Tennis Pro

I love the Tennis Pro. One of my new favorites. I was worried he was going to occupy social outcast perv spot in the cast.

When the core ideas of DR3 were as bad as they were, I don't think a more familiar medium would've made a difference.

There's some interesting ideas and some fun stuff to be found in DR3 (at least the English dub). Its problems for me lay in all the endless character reversals (Don't even get me started on the continuity issues). People literally flipped switches throughout the series in ways that didn't make sense at the time of the reveal, generally made the plot more messy, and didn't really do much to develop any characters surrounding the flip. Some characters flipped so many times, that I frankly just stopped giving a shit about em'. Sure more dialogue would have helped make those reversals easier to digest, but in the end, the whole undertaking was too messy for its own good.

Somebody translated his first Free Time event when the game first came out back in January, and he's perfect. Didn't look for any of his other FT events out of fear of finding out what his fate is.

My favorites never make it to the end. Maybe this'll be the exception?

:'>

First Danganronpa game I'm going completely clean into. I've never felt this anticipation with this series before.

The anime doesn't count.

The preorder theme has the child caregiver at the forefront with Kaede, so I'm curious if she is going to be the Kirgiri if this game.

I feel like he's not long for this world, but I'm really hoping I'm wrong. He's so damn charming.

Even if she does die, I expect her to last a while. She seems to be calm, competent, and cynical enough to survive.

This is the very first promo when the game was first announced, yar? And then all three weirdly don't seem to be all that significant in subsequent promotional materials.

Yeah, Robot and Astronaut are also the forefront make characters in the theme. I'm curious if this is all just false flagging. I dunno though.

Both Maid and Child Caregiver seem like they both fit the bill of the secret badass companion

Funimation do tend to make their dubs really silly when they can get away with it, and in this case it actually helps a lot. It definitely elevates the show from a trainwreck to a funny trainwreck.
Chris Bevins did a great job with the localization.
Gave the dub an absurd treatment that the source material clearly deserved.
It's hard to defend the anime but I enjoyed elements of it quite a bit. I remain an unabashed fan of Chisa in either language.

Supreme Leader reminds me of Nagito in the fact that he instigates shit.

Their designs are also similar (which I'm pretty sure is deliberate), so I'm curious as to how they'll differentiate him from Nagito in terms of being the shit-stirrer.

[DR2 Spoilers]:
For some reason, I actually see him surviving, unlike Nagito, which I'm not super jazzed on since I'm not a huge fan of his character so far.

The fact that if you hold right click, your truth bullet becomes a lie bullet and you can lie in debates is just fantstic. I love V3.

Seriously, this V3 demo has a load of improvements from the previous games. Besides now being able to lie in debates, the triple debates make things a lot more hectic and harder to find the contradictions in. Logic Dive was fun too.

I do think the writing is a bit worse though. None of the characters seemed all that concerned over the fact that someone was murdered. In the previous games they were much more surprised and upset by it. The demo also felt a bit rushed. I didn't even know who some of these characters were when the trial started, though I assume this is partially a result of just being a demo.

It just occurred to me that I miscounted the number of murderers in my list. Editing the Detective to be a murderer now (I still do not think he'll last long at all).

Playing the demo on Steam using Keyboard and Mouse and the camera keeps pulling to the right and up all on it's own. Anyone know what the issue might be?

The demos for this series never take themselves seriously.

And there are introductions for every character, but you have to scour all the different rooms to find them.

I wasn't feeling too hyped about this game, or even the franchise recently. I even skipped the D3 anime (which sounds like it was a good call). But I saw this thread, and saw that there was a Steam demo, so I downloaded it.

Immediately, I'm reminded of just how stylish these games are. I didn't enjoy playing on PC at all (R2 button? What the hell is the R2 button on a PC? Why is 'enter' the Y button?!), but I enjoyed it enough that I preordered the Vita version.

Kind of disappointed that two of my three favorites so far are already pretty much guaranteed to die. After all, they've never
left two characters standing next to each other at the class trial alive before, and they're next to Kaede. RIP Gonta and Himeno.

At least the third (child care girl) seems like she has a decent chance to survive.

Well, yeah. It's just a demo. Can't expect them to bring out the A-game writing for it. The point was just to introduce the characters and some of the mechanics.

Just got the opportunity to play the demo version on PC.

Damn, it's good to return to Danganronpa without the constraints of the Hope's Peak saga. First of all, I must say that the UI design is wonderful, and the fact that conversations can involve 2 or more people in the same screen while the sprites of the other characters remain in the background makes the whole thing much more lively. The control scheme is familiar to anyone that played previous entries, no problems with that either (except the tank controls while in the halls of the school, but that a minor issue).

As for the characters themselves, I have no qualms with any of them. Everyone was enjoyable with what little I saw of them in the demo, with the highlights being the Astronaut, the Maid, the Caregiver, the Robot, and the Supreme Leader. The cast as a whole is a quirky one, and I expect good writing involving them. I totally expect
that Kokichi guy
to be an annoyance later on, as
the class trial showed
.

The new class trial mechanics are more of a mixed bag.
  • The developers seem intent on making new minigames for the sake of it, as that weird block-destroying thing just looks superflous in my opinion. That specific point in the demo was obvious, and shouldn't need a puzzle for the answer.
  • Panic discussion seems to be a good idea, I just hope that those sections in the game have enough time in order to divert attention from one dialogue to another one.
  • The car seems like a stylish makeover of the mechanic found in DR2. Not much to say about it.
  • As for the lie bullets, that is a pretty interesting reversal from what was done in previous installments. I only hope that in the full game their use is not so telegraphed as in here.
I have to say, Takada's music is on point during every section. Even if various of the pieces are heavily remixed ones from the DR1 and DR2, they are distinct enough for me. I'm so happy to actually have a new soundtrack.

Let's see what is coming for us in September.

I dunno. If there's one thing the first and second games are good at, it's to play with the audience's preconceptions. So, considering you're already comfortable enough to make a "guaranteed" statement like this, there's a chance they'd pull the rug under you and
make them all survive or even kill Kaede instead.

I don't understand why a non-canon demo trial would end before the revealing the killer... Since this isn't in the actual game, there's just no resolution ever? It's the first time I've played a DR demo so maybe they're all like that, but I was expecting to go all the way to the end.

Unless the first trial in V3 is actually very similar and they just replaced the real victim with Hiro, I guess that's the scenario that would actually make sense to me... In which case I wish I didn't play it, haha.

The abrupt ending also got me wondering about this. I don't remember the demo for DR1 being like this, but I might need to watch it again. The setup seemed very much like the first murder in DR1, so I thought it was a riff on that and it would go all the way with a comedic ending or something, but there was just a big cliffhanger.

Guess we'll find out next month.

Most likely making it to the end
Kaede (duh)
K1-B0
Maki
Kokichi
Rantaro
Kaito

Most likely dying
Kirumi
Miu
Tenko
Shuichi (just to foil people who played DR1)
Gonta
Tennis guy

Most definitely dying
Himiko
Artist
Creepy Anthropologist guy
Tsumugi (Willing to bet that she's going to be a murderer with a batshit crazy side)

I want the mechanic to die, as well as the "degenerate males" girl. That or I hope hope HOPE that they change significantly by Chapter 3 or so. They're both super annoying.

Soooo... Retail will surely have better sound mixing, right? The demo was inexcusable with English voice. We shouldn't even need to download an improved voice pack, that stuff should be on the cart from the get-go. :/

If I remember correctly, the first demo ended with "the hair is crucial evidence!!!"

I dunno. I can see Ki-B0 dying before the end, but late in the game. Trying to figure out how someone killed a robot is prime mystery material.

Conversely I can see the creepy anthropologist guy living to the end simply because the characters I hate most always seem to survive longer than they should in DR games.

They might even
have the participants take different spots in the actual game

If it were for predictions Anthropologist and Cosplayer are dead before starting the game. Almost everyone here wants those two dead.

Magician has an ultimate that puts her in killer shoes so I have to wonder if Kodaka will go against our expectations for her.
Tennis guy is one of my favourites right now but I don't see him surviving; same for entomologist.

Caretaker (maki) is a wild card right now.
Robot seems either easy victim or easy survivor.

Detective is going to make it, he seems like a character that will grow a lot of confidence through the game and survive, calling it.

I have to wonder if kodaka will play with us when it comes to the number of survivors, we have had two games where by the last stretch it was easy to see
6 or 5 people remaining alive and at that point you knew those were going to make it, because the plot deviated itself from killing games to go against the mastermind.

I am!
I'm going try an consume all Danganronpa media before V3 arrives.

Maybe I'm just slow but it's taken me 2 months to go through 1, 2 and the anime as well as buying the ps4 version of UDG on launch.

If you can rinse through it by sept 29, more power to you!

I feel like Maki and Shucchi have the highest chance of survival, everything about them screams late game to me.

I'm not expecting Kokichi the Supreme Leader to survive mainly since DR1/2/3 spoilers
Toko and best boy Nagito Komaeda are both alive <3 so I'm sadly not expecting another morally grey/evil character to survive/comatosed this time

Tennis Pro might as well be a dead man walking in my mind since Danganronpa is sadly not too kind to non normal looking characters.

Rantaro can go either way since the first two ??? were Kyoko and Hinata
If he continues the trend then he lives but I can see him being a curve ball

I'm not sure about the rest of the cast but I'm interested in learning more about Himiko, K1-B0 and Kaeda (She has such a normal talent for a protagonist)

Is there a list of all the voice actors in the game? I would look it up myself but I'm too scared of accidental spoilers (worst part about anticipating DR was googling a character name and finding "death" as one of the recommendations)

Are you looking for English VAs or Japanese seiyuu? Because gaps are still being filled on the localization VA front. We only know 13 of the 22 voice actors cast to portray the students, Monokuma and the Monokuma Kubs as of right now.
