Daniel Craig Says James Bond Shouldn’t Be Played By A Woman

Wow, that is so cool! You go Daniel Craig!

Wouldn't it be fantastic to live in a world where you could say that without being shunned immediately?

Maybe that's the kickoff!

Skyfall ruined the easy out of "James Bond is a cover identity" to allow for lots of different types of men to be James Bond/007. I have less issue with an Afro-Caribbean, Hong Kong, or Indian man being James Bond so long as the backstory fits. I figure all the "Bond" agents would share some background similarities like the posh school upbringing and tastes for luxury to allow for some character continuity even if the human in the role has some variations. A surly 'street rat' Bond isn't as appealing to me, for example, or a nerdy techno-geek or straight up spec-ops war machine soldier type.

But post-Skyfall I don't see how they replace Daniel Craig without having to do some significant wrangling of the lore, creating the Bond cover ID from that point (which would be kinda cool, Craig as the 'Bond' cover ID template), or just wishing it all away and hey, that white guy James Bond is now someone else.

I've said it before, a "007" (or 009, 002, etc) WITHOUT James Bond is a hard sell. BOND is the attraction, not necessarily the stunts, spy gadgets, or what have you. We have seen numerous Bond-like movies with varying degrees of success (mostly poor performance, really) but the secret sauce is clearly JB.

It's not like Doctor Who where the Doctor is an alien. He regenerated into a she. That is ok. The Doctor can be anything really. James Bond is and always should be male. If they want a female secret agent either get a new franchise or make a different 00 for Bond (like in the new movie).

But are there black dudes named James? That seems like a white-ass name like Jeremy or someshit.

Based Bond.

Current day: James Bond will remain a white male.

The future, in cray cray world: James Bond is a gender neutral android who's sex organs are selectable and spin around just like his numberplate on his Aston Martin.

He is right. Write a better part for a women and make her a 00-.

We saw it can work in Atomic Blonde and it was great. Coolness is not limited to Bond.

That'll do well...

There already was a female spy movie and no one gave a fuck, even though it was way better than any recent James Bond movie

Fuck I still have to watch this. I heard it was really good.

Anyways, Craig's stance is the one I've been leaning toward for years. Create new stories that fit the new characters you want to create; don't bastardize the characters and stories that fans have already seen/enjoyed. There's probably a certain amount of "free" marketing the outrage will get you, but it never seems to turn out well (see Ghostbusters 2016, Charlie's Angels remake, etc).

Still, I'm surprised to hear anybody in the public eye actually say this and face the twitter mob. Especially a Brit.

Thumbs up from me.

Of all of the male power fantasies in fiction Bond has to be top three. Right. It's like Batman, Bond, than whoever.

That said if a filmmaker wanted to make some kind of special agent movie with Natalie Portman beating up the bad guys internationally while bedding men then throwing them away I would be there day one and two.

Well it won't be James Bond anymore if it's entirely different character to begin with soooooooooooo yeah.

Shocking.

Now let's await the 15 mins of outrage.

After the latest marketing Blitz we can say two things:

1. The new Bond will be woke wank
2. After box office numbers of other woke wank they are terrified it will bomb, that is why they are trying to appeal to the general audience with things, with should not be controversial at all (aka Bond is a guy)

Well obviously James Bond isn't a women. It's in the name.

But James Bond and 007 are different things.

You can have a women 007 as that's a job title.

How are people still having this conversation?

Because the woke crowd wanted to co-opt the name and character to ride the coattails.

Craig is right (and I saw this as a socially progressive individual) - make a new 007 and character - stop rebooting established canon.

Hey there Joanna Dark.

Oh my fuck a Perfect Dark film done well would be so legit.

agree with him. james bond shouldn't be played by a female. that doesn't make any sense at all.

either make a spin off Bond movie or do what Craig said and make better roles for females.

edit: i would be totally up for a movie with Ana De Armas in the main role in a "Bond" spin off. loved her in NTTD, she was fucking kick ass, but she got very little screen time. there's your non white male actress. female + cuban.

I think that a Bond-eqsue character as a woman could work fine in fact I think it'd be cool ( a less grumpy playgirl Black Widow ).

But 007 shouldn't be a woman.
The problem is that the movie industry ( and gaming tbh ) is so fucking unoriginal and would rather just remake or steal ideas.
People give the Chinese shit for ripping stuff off and while that's true Hollywood also does like a billion awful remakes every year from foreign films and isn't exactly the paragon of originality and ride trends for decades.

So yes instead of creating a new character it wouldn't surprise me if they did '' Jessica Bond '' or some dumb shit like that.
I actually think that they could still use the setting, they could still have it be set in the James Bond universe but just a new Agent totally unrelated to Bond as a spinoff.

She was criminally underused. One of the best parts of the film.

Hé is right though , and this is not about discrimination or some other BS. That’s how the character was creativity imagined . Maybe bond has a nice that can do a mcgyver spin off 🤣

but a big part of bond's character is that he's a womaniser who seduces everyone. it doesn't really work the other way around

Why wouldn't a female seducer work?

The seduction and womaniser part of Bond was also very heavily downplayed in recent movies.
And women using sex is an actual tactic with irl spies and it has been throughout history.
It'd be more accurate than with Bond tbh if we want to look at real spies and agents.

I don't agree with Craig and it's patently stupid rhetoric.

That said, I also don't care if they keep Bond a white, cis male.

Just make an offshoot series, where his daughter, Jenna Bond, is a smoking hot 21 year old.

I would counter that what is “stupid” is taking established characters and playing identity games with them to satisfy some misguided feelings about “equity”. The story of James Bond is about a man with specific characteristics. If people want a character with different characteristics, they can create one. But it will cease to be James Bond. The creator can call this new character James Bond, but it will not be the same character.

If I decided to make a sequel for Turner and Hooch with a kangaroo instead of a dog, it would be different. Even if I have insisted the kangaroo was just like the dog, it wouldn’t be. That might make for a good movie. But it would necessarily be different because the characters are different.

How does Atomic Blonde compare to The Long Kiss Goodnight? I haven't watched AB yet but the Geena Davis film is what it brought to mind.
I've seen AB once, but I've watched LKG a dozen times or more. It is the SUPERIOR film in almost all respects, but mostly because it has a fun script. AB is just trying to hard IMHO and didn't really have its own voice yet.
