Dark Souls internal rendering resolution fix (DSfix)

I've tried multiple keys for the pause function in DSfixkeys.ini, but nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any advice?
Have you enabled the FPS unlock function? It only works in conjunction with that, and I might have forgotten to document that fact.

I recently disabled that. I had an inkling that was the solution. And you're correct, I don't see any documentation stating the FPS unlock function was required.

Why did you disable it? If they bother you, pretty much all issues related to it can be circumvented by setting the frame limit to 30 FPS, while still giving you better performance than the default mode.

I disabled it because I was messing around at 6k resolution. I've never had issue with it on, I just wanted to lock it at 30 to see if the frame-rate could stay there. I didn't realize it gave better performance.

I believe the benefit is that by default the game will either lock 30fps, or lock 15fps. With the framerate unlocked, you have everything from 0 to 30 available to you, including stuff like 25, 20, etc etc. So a small dip below 30fps doesn't lead to you having to play at 15fps.

So falling through the world when sliding down ladders can't happen with the game unlocked at 30, like it does when unlocked at 60?

I am having trouble following the discussion, but I have my rate at 60 and there is only one ladder I fall through...the one near the sunlight alter and rats...just don't slide on that one. Although some use the toggle key for 30-60 for some jumps, being innovative allowed me to get the asylum revisited (just do a running jump, then turn around backward and hop over the artifact.) I also made the jump for Iato....Though it took a few tries. Small price to pay for the beautiful smooth gameplay imo.

Exactly. Also, the default frame pacing thing in the game is strangely implemented, and sometimes takes much longer to get back up to 30 FPS from 15 than it should.

Yes, that's well-tested since it's also exactly what the toggle key does. Basically, theres no reason not to unlock the framerate and limit it at 30. (Though personally I think 60 is easily worth the minor inconvenience of having to toggle it for 2 jumps and sliding down ladders)

anyone else getting low framerates in areas like blighttown and the abyss in the DLC?

getting around 30-40ish while in most of the other areas I get a stable 60 fps. my pc configuration (gtx 760, 3570k@4.4) should be more than enough to handle all of dark souls, or?

Sort of related, but not directly:

People were claiming to get their GWFL IDs banned for running with this fix.
GFWL is going away -- games like Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, and Bioshock 2 recently removed GFWL entirely from their Steam copies.
Dark Souls was using GFWL (as implied by my first statement) -- is it going to be removed via patching?

I haven't heard anyone getting banned for using DSfix.

As for the future of the game after GfWL shuts down, no one knows. We can hope that they'll patch it. Namco has shown some signs of life on the PC market lately, so maybe there's hope.

Believe.

Does anyone remember that sick Firelink Shrine soundcloud mix someone posted in here or the Dark Souls thread?

I'd really like to listen to it but can't find it.

Wow so I had to reconfigure my DSfix for the first time since I bought the game last year. I had always locked the game at the traditional 30 beacuse I'd heard some stuff about weirdness with the engine and falling off ladders, etc. Well, I finally figured what the hell I've played 70 hours of this game at 30 fps so I bumped it up to 60fps. Its insane. Its like seeing the hobbit in HFR. It looks weird and uncanny. It almost looks everything is moving slightly faster, but the timing is the same so I don't think that can be. Theres also a slight amount of veritcal tearing.

Wait, was 60 FPS fixed? Or are you running on an older version of the game? Because unlocking the FPS crashes my game.

I have the steam version so I assume it's up to date. My dsfix was broken when I booted the game this morning so I downloaded the new dsfix 2.1 and 60fps mode definitely is working.

Latest version is 2.2 though? Hrm. I'll try 2.1 I guess.

Edit: 2.1 also crashes the game if I try to unlock the framerate. Oh well, I don't really care enough to tinker with it, 30 FPS is fine for this game.

I'm on the latest version of Dark Souls and the latest version of DSfix and the frame rate unlock works for me.

Have you tried disabling Windows DEP?

I think I'm gonna go back to 30fps it's too weird at 60fps for me.

After playing at 60fps, 30 is like a slideshow.

Are you having trouble with 2.2? 2.1 was crashing the game because of a recent Dark Souls update. I had to go 2.2. No problem with it and the frame rate unlock.

Just tried out the 60 FPS mode too, feels so weird haha. Just a question, I know it says theres a chance your GFWL account could be banned from turning it on, just wondering if the same applies to Steam?

Valve doesn't usually punish paying customers, even when using more morally ambiguous things such as cracked exes.

Game doesn't even have VAC.

I even sent a support ticket to Valve regarding modding files to fix KotOR way back. They said it's okay since it doesn't have VAC.

I don't think anyone has actually been banned from GFWL for it either.

I would call that legally ambiguous but certainly not morally ambiguous.

I applied this and have played a bit, got to the first bell.

I have a Radeon 7870 and something doesn't seem right. It doesn't look much different than the 360 version I have.

Is this card not good enough to notice an improvement or am I missing something?

The console and PC version of the games are identical in every way visually. If you apply the DSfix properly, it will have a higher resolution and I believe you can get a higher framerate. Beyond that, there should not be any differences.

EDIT: There are also apparently other things that can be tweaked to get better visuals with DSfix.

If you run at a resolution of higher than 720p and can't immediately notice a big difference, then you either haven't installed it properly or you need to get your eyes checked. A simple test would be to enable the framerate unlocker in the dsfix config, which will make the game run at 60fps. You will definitely notice this.

You're forgetting Ambient Occlusion, Anti-Aliasing, Gaussian DOF, Minimal HUD, Texture Overrider, etc.. DSFix isn't just a simple resolution buffer unlocker, it's a full-on suite of graphical tweaks that make a huge difference to the game.

Thanks I'll double check my work. I probably missed a step or did not properly configure something.

For those running the game at 60 fps the only really problem is that your jumping/roll distance is shorter for some reason. So you can miss some jumps. However backspace easily lets you switch between 30 and 60 fps. You are doing yourself a disservice by playing this at 30 fps imo.

I stand corrected then good sir. I thought it was just a resolution fix.

Unless you run high res mods. Then it looks even better than increasing the resolution.

So, ever since that last Dark Souls update, and DSfix 2.2, my game has been experiencing these half second moments of lag every couple minutes or so.

Like a stutter. My girlfriend has a new PC, and it does the same on her system.

Anyone else experiencing this since the recent updates?

Do you have any high res texture mods activated or are you just playing Vanilla Dark Souls? Just checking, since excessive application of such mods can cause the issue mentioned above.

Nope. Just the settings I had in the DSfix ini from before.
I'm also running the DSCfix.

We're on the same router.. I wondered if it might have been network related.

So outside of Durante's DS Fix, are there any other must have mods that I should install?

Texture packs, environment mods, etc?

Quick question, has anyone gotten a DS4 working with Dark Souls? I have X360ce in the DATA directory, but the button config is totally borked, even though it works fine in other games. I looked around and saw it had something to do with dinput, but don't know how to fix it.
