Dark Souls internal rendering resolution fix (DSfix)

A bit off topic, but awhile ago I was messing around with DSfix on Halo 2 Vista again and the FPS unlocker works on that as well (120FPS Halo 2 is godlike)

Does this work on any other games as well that have their FPS locked?

I really wish I understood how that worked. Can you tell me what you did for that to occur? I would definitely try it with other games.

Just slapped the Dsfix files in there and BAM. Unlocked the FPS to 120 and that worked too.

Got $5 on this working for ShadowRun as well.

Thanks. Will give it a try, though i've never seen tearing like this before, it's very persistent.

Tearing can be realllll weird sometimes.

I have a 120hz monitor and use something called Lightboost.

As a result, sometimes when I switch over to it it's actually in 121hz mode, and as a result I just have a constant tear that crawls up my screen over and over until I rectify it.

Wanted to post with an update that I fixed my issue with DSfx Shader Suite by clearing out everything except the base game and reinstalling DSfix, DSCfix, DSfx Shader Suite, etc.... I suspect remnants of SweetFX were somehow the culprit. Regardless, thank you so much for this mod [Asmodean]! The game looks better than I thought it ever could look. I especially appreciate the subtle improvements of your default settings, so I think I'll stick with those.

Made a quick run around various areas to show DSfx Shader Suite off with screenshots. I just hope minus can cope with hosting them.

Even the menus seem to look better(along with a font mod):

You can see more in motion at 1080p in my last Dark Souls stream here: http://www.twitch.tv/sonos/b/500835901

Ok so I really want to unlock the framerate but when I do and I play in fulscreen mode I get horrible tearing. Is there any known solutions? Am I an outlier??

Now if I switch to borderless window mode I get rid of the tearing but then for whatever reason I can't get the game to render at 1080p. I change the resolution in the ini file and all that but all I can get is 720p.

Am I doomed for one tradeoff or the other or is there some sort of fix my PC illiterate mind hasn't understood??

Wow, amazing screenshots. If I ever get a beastly PC, I'll be sure to pester you for this exact set up!

I'm no graphics junkie, and I don't really mind how DS2 is shaping up in the looks department, but I must admit it's impressive what you guys are capable of. Praise Durante and may strength be granted to your vessel and whathaveyou!

D3DOverrider can force Dark Souls to vsync. It's a pretty simple program, you just start it, point it to the DATA.exe file in the Dark Souls folder, and check "Force Vsync."

Yep, it's a really pretty game on PC (thanks Durante).

So, I decided to have a replay of Dark Souls, and said I'd write some shaders specifically for it.

Seeing as I've already spent far more time than I'd originally intended to on this, I thought I may as well share it, with any who may like to use it. I figured here would be the best place to do so, seeing as DS on PC would hardly be enjoyed at all, if not for Durante's excellent DSFix.

Current effects include:

  • SMAA (latest version: https://github.com/iryoku/smaa)
  • FXAA 3.11
  • High Quality Blended Bloom
  • Scene Tonemapping
  • RGB Colour Correction
  • Post RGB Gamma Correction
  • S-Curve Contrast Enhancement
  • Texture Sharpening
  • Pixel Vibrance Adjustment

This pack also includes an updated version of VSSAO for DSFix.

To Install:
Extract DSFx_ShaderSuite_v1.20.zip to your \Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition\DATA root folder (where DATA.exe is) The shader options are all in an ini file named 'DSFx_Settings.ini' So , you shouldn't have to go near the actual fx fle. unless you want to, of course.

To Edit Settings:
Open DSFx_Settings.ini in a text editor. I recommend Notepad++, or the like. You can enable, disable, and customize various options for each effect. There are plenty of options to play around with. Settings are clearly sectioned, and labeled. Use the documentation comments for instructions on each option

I wrote the effects to work with Dark Souls via the great injector, eFX. This injector is not my work. It was created by Crosire.

Some screens below. There are a few more in the 'Screenshots Folder' in the SkyDrive link below for the archive. You're better off viewing original in full screen, if you want a somewhat decent comparison.
Screens are a bit out dated tbh, from the initial version.
Shaders Off
Shaders Enabled - Default Settings
Cinematic Tonemapping Enabled
Shaders Off 2
Shaders Enabled 2

If you want to view the full quality screens, right-click the image once it loads up, and select 'view original'.

Constructive feedback is helpful. Enjoy. This typically isn't for those with systems that can barely handle Dark Souls as it is, unfortunately.

Link: DSFx Shader Suite v1.20

My system;
i7 3770k @ 4.4
GTX 680
8GB 2133 CL9

Updated the above to 1.20. For anyone who happens to be using it;

Highlights;
  • Most effects have been updated.
  • Updated settings & descriptions. (Also toned down default settings a bit)
  • Colour conversion/calculation fixes.
  • Added new bloom blending type to choose.
  • Added new gamma correction curve.
  • Added a new, more accurate bicubic-based texture sharpen type algo to choose.
  • Added filmic tone mapping operations.
  • Added SMAA (latest version from git source),

If anyone knows of any other effects that would compliment Dark Souls nicely. Feel free to suggest, and I can include them in next version.

Enjoy ^.^

How does unlocking the framerate run the risk of getting banned from GFWL? I'm afraid

You'll be fine.

It's technically possible, but hasn't been done at all in practice, and GFWL is shutting down in June so I doubt they'll be jumping to ban people who are doing nothing but unlocking the frame rate in a predominantly single player game.

Wanted to start playing again so I reinstalled the game but now it's crashing everytime the game loads for some reason.

I had the same issue, in my case it was because there were still older DSfix files in the instal directory since uninstalling through steam doesn't remove anything you manually dump into a game's folder, get rid of any DSfix files then launch the game and make sure AA is turned off.

Okay, thanks. considering all i've heard about gfwl, it wouldn't surprise me.

I want to avoid the screen-tearing while using v-sync too, and I downloaded this. I get a message saying I need to disable "driver signing enforcement." If I click no, I can still open the program. Is that anything I need to address? Does that mean my gpu drivers aren't updated or something?

Working now, thanks.

Crap. I tried to install the fix but it's crashing the executable upon startup. Not exactly sure what I did wrong apart from checking the fullscreen-box in the PC settings.

Tried to delete the game (aswell as the DSfix contents in the Steamapps folder) and reinstalled. Still not working.

edit: Nevermind, got it up and running. Reinstalling and resetting did the trick.

Thanks. Will give it a try, though i've never seen tearing like this before, it's very persistent.

Hey, did borderless fullscreen window work for you? I had the exact same issue with the tearing-line moving from the bottom of the screen to the top. Only problem is that selecting "windowed" mode in the game won't let me use the correct resolution.

okay so

you have to select windowed mode in-game for borderless windowed mode to work

but doing so means the game selects one of the windowed resolutions from its menu to render at, no matter what you put into DSfix, which isn't a problem unless your monitor isn't 16:9

when I tell the game to render in 1680x1050 fullscreen, via the ingame menu or dsfix, it renders the game in 16:9 with bars on top and bottom

but going into borderless windowed mode at 1680x1050 results in the game being stretched, with no bars

so my choice is between tearing or a stretched display

It worked for me yeah.

I recently changed to Windows 8. After I downloaded Dark Souls again, it says the executable has stopped working. What do I do?

Edit: Fixed.

I want to added another endorsement for Asmodean's mod. The game looks incredible.

Anyone encountering system memory running low while playing Dark Souls? This has never happened with any other game for me.

Hmm, you did. Maybe try this?

Got unlock FPS to work in 8.1 by using this link. http://mywindows8.org/disable-data-execution-prevention-in-windows-8/ and using the command line method. Not sure it's worth it since it disables DEP completely. I don't know why I was able to use the exception method before, but then it stopped working when I uninstalled my graphics driver.

Edit: Everything is all good now. I checked my default DEP setting on my other computer and put it back on my gaming computer. The Default DEP setting is "Turn on for essential Windows programs and services only". I had changed it to Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select" I think things got messed up when I had installed the DSFIX files incorrectly and I was trying different things out. The lesson learned here is to read directions and remember to change back settings that you might have changed trying to troubleshoot. In short, I never had to change DEP in the first place.

So I reduced the HUD size scaler from .5 to .4 and reduced opacity of the HUD elements to .7 and I don't get that odd glitch when directing the camera at certain angles/facing certain objects (like the sun) anymore :D

HUD mod for me still doesn't work when using the downscaling though :/

Having a bit of a problem here guys with DSfix, hoping someone can help me here.
So, whenever i'm playing coop on DS, both the extreme left and right sides of the screen cut the hp bar, like this:
Already tried messing around with the hud options, but to no avail.

EDIT: Fixed it by turning of the HUD config. thought i changed it. well, would like to know why it happens, 'cause minimal hud and changing sizes is really good.

What's causing the screen to turn yellow/white when this is enabled and how do I fix it? Everything is default, AA disabled in game and in DSFix

e- this is what happens

hi guys, I installed this game and the dsfix, I haven't actually change anything except for the languaje but I have the following problem with the resolution, just look at the screenshot

what am I doing wrong? thanks

So, is it normal that the game stretches out in 16:10 aspect ratio?

I've tried several resolutions (both 16:9 and 16:10, both rendering res and window size) and it's always stretched.

Also, i'm in borderless window mode.

I've used this mod countless hours on my 16:9 monitor, first time on a 16:10 one.

Yes, it does normally stretch.

There was a fix but as Dark Souls was updated it no longer worked and wasn't updated.

Currently, only good option is to play letterboxed
