Dark Souls internal rendering resolution fix (DSfix)

Gotta say. Texture work is surprisingly good for a game that's running natively at 1024x720...

It's like they don't know what they're doing @ FROM -.-

Fantastic fix, hopefully the devs offer Durante a little something and get this integrated into an official patch.

I said "I'll wait until the hack fix" before playing Dark Souls PC, sound whaddaya know...

Oh god, it's even more glorious than I had imagined.

I'm getting 30 fps most of the time with an internal res of 3840x2400 on a i5 2500k @ 4.7 and GTX460 @ 900/1800/2100. Only time it's really slowing down is when there's water around like with Firelink Shrine, and whenever I hit up a bonfire.

Not sure how it's going to perform in other areas or when combat encounters get more hectic, but even then I can just turn it back down to 2560x1600 and it'd be perfect.

I get this when I start the game with the res fix...

Is it just me? anyone else have this problem?

i'm getting the same problem when i apply the fix.

i notice that DS opens in windowed mode, then turns on fullscreen mode. anyway to force it to start just in fullscreen mode?

I'd really like to know how to supersample at least from 2560x1600 to my 1920x1200, if that's even possible (I'm not sure I understand what supersampling even is lol).

Well, fuck.
Turn off AA. edit: GAFs so full of ninjas...

It's rendering at a higher resolution than your native resolution, and downscaling to your native res. Just edit the INI.

Couple random pics @ internal res of 3840x2400:

You just stick 2560 and 1600 as the values in the ini.

For someone who never played this before and wants to make sure they see all of the tutorial thingies, at about what point would it be safe to apply this patch?

Wonderful. Started Dark Souls on PS3 but held of after the PC announcement. This fix alone makes it all worth it too. Beautiful and with a stable framerate as well, can't wait to dig into this game finally.

Many thanks, Durante.

Just stop. Have you played a PC game at 1024x720 or anything lower than native res for that matter? It looks like crap. I didn't buy a PC to continue playing games at non-native resolutions.

I've played both PC and console games on this monitor at resolutions lower than my monitor's native resolution. Pretty easy to do when the options are either playing a great game or ignoring it entirely.

Thankfully we now have more options for Dark Souls.

Thanks for the fix Durante, working well here besides the text issue. Unfortunately the game runs like ass on my machine even at default settings. My computers a bit old as far as a gaming PC goes and has a weak CPU, but Darksouls still runs worse than just about any other game I've tried.

Looks great man, good job. I have a 6850 and haven't encountered any framerate problems. I cannot read the little writings on the ground though.

Thanks, I figured as much, but seemed too simple and thought it may be something more complicated than that.

Nope, Durante's fix lets you modify the render resolution into something greater than the default 1024x720, and ultimately allows for supersampling. Use multiples of your monitor's native res and test stuff out.

I don't start getting a bad framerate hit till 5120 x 3200 :p

What internal res would I need to set to imitate supersampling? I'm running at 1360x768 right now. I want it to look even better even if it runs the same with slowdown.

I'm getting a solid 30 at 2560x1600. Bless you, based Durante.

I really, REALLY hope that it's possible to fix the text display and super-pixelated DOF effect though!

It's progressed to an incredible point. Water cooling used to be the realm purely for enthusiasts with a massive radiator and tank and all sorts of crazy shit.

This is what water cooling looks like these days.

That... is actually very impressive. I'll look into it for my next build.

wow, that is pretty fantastic. i haven't followed water cooling in years. amazing how it's evolved.

my first addition of screenshots to this. i'm super sampling. with:
renderWidth 2560
renderHeight 1440
logLevel 1

as my settings.

praise the sun.

Jacked up the resolution to 3840 x 2160 and performance remains the same and it looks great. I find it kind of hilarious that the game went from a locked 1024 x 720 res to people downsampling from 4096x2304 and above virtually the second the game was officially released.

At 4096x2304 I started getting a steep drop to 15 FPS on certain bonfires and backstab animations. Not a big deal since it's not essential to have 30 FPS at those moments, but it reminded me too much of the PS3 version. Dialed it back just a bit.

Matchmaking working really smooth. Amazing to see the game run in double digit frames during co-op. It was quiet terrible on the PS3. Game is really good looking... just thinking about what it could have been if they had put some effort... oh well.

Perhaps Namco/From will be shamed into releasing an official resolution patch! Because this really isn't looking good for them. Aside from a few lingering graphical glitches, it runs like a dream.
