Dark Souls internal rendering resolution fix (DSfix)

Perhaps Namco/From will be shamed into releasing an official resolution patch! Because this really isn't looking good for them. Aside from a few lingering graphical glitches, it runs like a dream.

At this point they should just cut Durante a check and offer him the source code... see what else he can do.

Ok I set the framebuffer to 1920x1080 and then it downscaled it to my native res. This one is just a test since I won't be messing with this too much longer tonight.

It definitely looks better and less aliased. Still the odd drops though. Not as bad as before so I'm really lost on why this is happening.

Durante has made Kotaku. Somehow, I'll never understand how, they turned his 23 minute fix into "a few hours".

http://kotaku.com/5937468/dark-souls-on-pc-looks-like-complete-st-but-theres-a-fix

That's because he said he had some things prepped to make the job easier since he was anticipating more work but alas, under 30 minutes to make progress.

IMPORTANT NOTE: All the disappointment and bitching you'll see over the game's visuals are just that. Bitching over visuals. The game itself - the important part - is all there and, from what I've played of it, works just fine, whether using a controller or a mouse + keyboard.

huh? didn't you guys say m/kb controls kinda sucks right now?

holy fuck, so detailed. night and day compared to before the mod.

Durante admitted that it took him longer since he had already started working on this fix in the past week leading up to release.

23 minutes is what I believe it took to get it implemented once he had his hands on the game.

Ahh, I see. Missed that in all the mad playing and GAF perusing of the past few hours.

Durante, thanks for your hard work! I had no idea so many details were hiding behind the low resolution. When I met Solaire of Astoria this time I could see the guy blink underneath that bucket-shaped helmet. Game looks super sharp at 2880x1600.

I might actually buy this on PC now... And From should reward Durante with something awesome.

It's progressed to an incredible point. Water cooling used to be the realm purely for enthusiasts with a massive radiator and tank and all sorts of crazy shit.

This is what water cooling looks like these days.

I have that cooler! My i5 2500k is running at 4.8 ghz thanks to that beast.

Holy crap that looks awesome.

Hey does anyone have any ideas on how to disable vsync in this game? I figure with the 30FPS cap and build in double buffering is a big reason for my shitty performance but I can't figure out how to disable it. I already tried forcing no vsync through RadeonPro to no avail.

So, I killed the Gargoyles, but forgot to talk to the dude behind the broken door
the guy that kills allies
. Is he gone for good? Did I miss out on that part of the game?

i think he'll free himself anyway so you'll see him again at the hub.

I'm camping out, helping people with
the gargoyles
. Look for my summon sign - Gamertag is Branesurjery!

Nah, as long as you didn't kill him.

4 more shots, and legacy, if you chose lower res, I noticed that it shows more or half like your pic.

Last shots for me tonight....

While it's nice it got fixed, still no willing to pick this up until I see how bad hackers will ruin the game especially since there is talk of hackers being able to get in your game even if you are human.

You mean even if you're undead? That could be a serious problem. I guess I could go entirely offline somehow but it sure would be disappointing to miss out on the note system.

What's this now?

I read on the steam forums that the game isn't using the GPU to nearly its full capacity, and bumping up all of the graphics options can help this. It fixed the vast majority of my framerate problems, still get minor drops but it's above the performance of the console version at least now. And drops to 25 or so instead of 15.

Specifically, in catalyst control panel I have it set to overwrite application settings for the Dark Souls exe. AA options turned all the way up. I have V sync off and triple buffering off. And I have Durante's mod on with the resolution set to 3840x2160 in the config and 1080p in the game.

Now I can actually play the game and stop messing with settings.. I hope.

indeed! all that detail buried in the game and FROM didn't bother to show it off. the fuck.

It seems they do that everywhere with this game though. All kinds of awesome lore, and story? They leave it for you to discover on your own, if you care enough to do so. An OST full of really awesome tunes? They only play it when you're too busy having your ass handed to you to notice. FROM knows how to exercise restraint, and I love 'em for it.

For anyone that cares I'm running an i7 2600k stock speed with a GTX 570. I'm using a resolution of 2560x1440 and there is not much slowdown at all. Rock solid 30 and the game looks FANTASTIC. I'm also using a ps3 controller because that's how I played Demon's And Dark.

I'm sure that'll get patched if it happens. This game is #1 seller on Steam right now, so it might've already payed for itself and that might turn into Bamco supporting it with patches, maybe. We shouldn't really take anything for granted with this port lol.

First bit of daylight I came to:

On, 5760x3240: http://www.abload.de/img/data2012-08-2405-58-029snh.png

Bonus 'On' shot: http://www.abload.de/img/data2012-08-2405-47-4rksur.png

Tried to measure GPU usage and such using EVGA Precision X, but the overlay insta-crashed the game.

Edit: Nvidia Control Panel FXAA doesn't appear to work, presumably because of the way the fix is implemented.

i mean the visuals...lol. not talking about the lore at all.

Thanks man, that fixed my fps issue, now I can play this sweet game.

hmm I beat it with a pyromancer on console, think ill go thief this time.

I wonder what that might be doing. When the drops occur for me, the GPU usage suddenly drops to 0% and the framerate drops to 15 fps (when everything is working normally and smooth it sits at around 30% usage). Then just as suddenly as it begain something triggers it to jump back up and the framerate returns to 30 fps. It's like the GPU just decides to shut down.

wow! thanks so much Durante for the fix. u have the appreciation of all Dark Souls fans.

just played it for the last couple hours with the fix ...seems to work perfectly fine.

love this game so much!

Wow. The game is a ton of fun and looks fantastic. It's rock solid at 30fps (560ti) - let me try and crank up the res to see what the threshold is like. :3

I've played through to the Undead Parish with DSfix set to 3840x2160, and the game set to 1080p. I5-2500k, 560ti (non-448), both at stock.

Solid 30fps throughout. Amazing work Durante. Thanks again!
