Game is still fun after all these years and it has some of the easiest Achievements ever.
This will likely be the first ever game I've 100%ed since launch. Yep, bought a 360 on launch, still haven't gotten 100% on ANY game, arcade or otherwise.

So is the demo setup such that you just never trigger a checkpoint and only have the initial 99 seconds (or whatever it is) until it runs out? It's either that, I'm doing it wrong.

I just played time trials with my friend for almost 2 hours on Beginner. My lap record for it is 7"95 and I got that number 3 times before giving up on trying to break it. This is the most addictive racing game I've played since MK64, I can't even imagine playing it with a wheel, that must be so much fun.

Aaah, why can't I find a game to join online? Played this on Partnernet, and now I've bought it looking to play online.. I'm playing this right now.. XBL: PatlaborSV2

Not actually that important
I bet by the time this hits EU PSN the online community will prolly be on the verge of dying... Stupid Sega.
I never managed to have a game online with Outrun 2 and I bought that a couple of weeks after its release, doesn't bode well for Daytona methinks... :/

Had a great time last night playing a bit using my Fanatec steering wheel. Force feedback is great too.

Only thing is, it doesn't seem to use the 6 speed shifter, which in not a big issue. (it may be tied to using the clutch pedal which obviously wont work) Haven't tried it with the sequential shifter, just went for paddles instead.

or maybe he got caught in a recent wave of bannings? I don't even know when or where that happened. :(

Nah I'm not pissed. Toomoosie had already called dibs on the OT so modus had every right to lock mine and allow his. No salt from me here :)

I've just been extremely busy with RL stuff this week and just barely downloaded the game on PSN a few hours ago. Checked it out for a few minutes and can say it's by far the best port Sega has ever blessed us with. I'm restricted to using a pad so that's the real bummer, but having arcade perfect Daytona USA at home with online play is something I will be forever grateful to Sega for.

The way its mapped right now is perfect (that's EXACTLY how I had my one mapped on the emu version) and your mapping method got flaws. With your method, you won't be able to perform the perfect start (the boast start), maintain a stable optimum drift on certain corners, and you'll have trouble accelerating without wheel-spinning which will cause you to perform slower acceleration. So, I strongly advise you to stick to the set-up it has now unless you are not using the same Playstation joypad as everyone else.

Wait how is it flawed? You don't need to brake in daytona, all you do is hold down the accel and change gears to drift around corners. Placing 4 gears on 4 buttons, especially shoulder buttons, means i can change to whichever gear i want when i want.

Clearly i need to play the game to see how it's all mapped out but my setup would just feel more natural i guess? To me personally anyway.

I guess using x to accel would stop the boost start? Since you don't want to floor it.

Snuck home again earlier and played a bit more. Fuck I adore this game.

I still can't believe that I have an arcade perfect port of Daytona USA in my home. It's been a long 18 years but gotdam it's been worth it.

How can you NOT buy this for 800 points? I've already got 2 other people to buy this. Gonna keep promoting. I've been tweeting and facebooking the shit out of it.

About to go home again but I'll actually need to sleep for the first time in 39 hours. Will be more by the time I actually get home and sleep

I'm the same. It blows my mind that it's taken this long, but on the same token I can't believe there's something capable of playing perfectly in my very own home.

I wonder if they have a patch/update for the arcades now that they (I guess) have the official Daytona licence to convert all those SRS arcade machines over. Guarantee they'd do twice as much business with the Daytona name and song.

Shame :(
None of the regular arcade modes log scores online. If people haven't gone outside those modes (which is understandable... I barely have) then they wouldn't show up.

Played about 30 minutes of online just now. Great FUN, but man they seemed to have nerfed the analog controls a bit. I'm only playing with a DS3 pad but when you drift using the stick, it's more on-rails than in the arcade. You can actually *steer* around most corners is this version. I can confirm this because I had both the PS3 version and the actual arcade version running simultaneously just now.

As it stands, as much as I love having online in this console port, I *slightly* prefer playing it via Model 2 emulator, because nothing beats playing Daytona with a wheel/shifter/pedal setup. I'll play the PS3 version some more later today :)

Shame it's hard coded.
Absolutely, 100% agree.

"X" button to accelerate and shift gears with the top buttons would have been perfect for me too.
I seriously hope for a patch allowing full remap (that'll sadly never come).

But well, what do I know, I expected ubisoft afghanistan to handle the port and Sega did it themselves so...

It's kind of hard to emulate analog pedals with digital buttons. I'm with Trojan X on that; there's no practical reason to configure it that way. You're only losing precision.

I think it would make good business sense for SEGA to sell us another 3 tracks together with patch & feature update every 2-3 months for 400pts. Well, if I was the Product Manager and Co-Producer of the game then that is what I would push for to happen. Also, I would make an official DAYTONA USA world forum for all SEGA racing fans to come in so I can communicate all update and community news easily.

SEGA don't seem to realise that their NON-VISIBILITY LOBBY system is killing them because the players are all in the wilderness not knowing if anyone is playing the game, especially if the Quick Search doesn't find a lobby due to its own error! I have no idea why AM2 INSIST in providing such a really poor lobby system. Also, the idea of the host hosting the game but doesn't have the power to change the racing settings once the lobby is created is a disaster. The reason why it is a disaster because there is only so many times the host want to keep playing a particular track so for variation, s/he would want to change track and the only way to do that is by quitting the lobby thus throwing everyone inside out into the wilderness again.

However, I don't work for SEGA and they probably wouldn't like me to anyway because they don't like smart people that push great things to happen in the benefit of the company and fans. Old SEGA would have done this though.

One thing for sure though... If this game sells then that really do demonstrates the power of "word of mouth" because the marketing on the game was practically ZERO (one bog-standard trailer and 2 press releases that were released with poor timings equates to zero effort).

Fuck it! I'm going to rant all this on SEGA's official forum and to my friends in Japan. Hopefully, my voice will be heard again.

Meanwhile, to make everything a reality, everyone here should push their friends to buy DAYTONA USA because this new SEGA is all about Sales. In SEGA's mind, they have given us what we wanted even though in reality, they have thrown this game out to us out of convenience due to SEGA RACING CLASSICS and it was their marketing team that pushed for the DAYTONA licence. If the sales of this game is not exceptional then SEGA will provide ZERO support for it, and I guarantee you that we will NOT get Scud Race, Sega Rally 1 & 2, Lost World, Spikeout, Daytona 2, Virtua Cop 3 and all the other games that we've been screaming for during the past several years.

He who pursues two rabbits gets two rabbits.
So, I've got some time to kill. If anyone here is new to this game or has never really practiced it seriously before, and if you want some quick tips to level-up, here's some information culled from my time on the old Model 2 emulator forums:

Basics:

Check the How To Play menu in-game. It has some good tips and basic techniques to get you started.

This is probably obvious, but don't bother with the automatic transmission. MT gives you more speed and control, so you might as well pretend that AT doesn't exist.

Drifting 101:

In the vast majority of cases, and always on the Beginner and Advanced tracks, you will never have to use the brake and never have to let up on the gas at all provided that you handle all of the turns correctly. The only time you should do otherwise is when it's necessary to correct minor errors.

Most corners should be approached out-in-out to maintain max speed: outside lane when approaching, inside lane at the apex, outside lane at the end. Does not apply when you need to line up differently for a subsequent turn in order to maintain an optimal racing line.

Generally, you want to downshift and drift to the appropriate angle right before the car enters the turn itself, then upshift and gradually straighten out the angle as you complete the turn.

Though every corner has its own optimal racing line and speed to learn, a general 4-1-(3)-4 shift pattern will get you through most of the game until you learn the ins and outs of every track. As you approach a corner, slam the wheel all the way to the max angle and downshift to 1st gear simultaneously. If it's a relatively easy/short corner, you can quickly upshift back to 4th gear and then straighten out. If it's a more difficult corner that doesn't allow you to maintain a very high speed, upshift to 3rd gear to prevent losing control of the car, and then upshift to 4th afterward.

Extra Drift: Shifting and turning at the same exact time allows you to drift at greater angles. You can utilize this multiple times in the same turn to shave off a little bit of time. For example, the basic method for the Beginner track's 3rd corner is a 4-2---4 shift pattern, but the optimal method is a 4-2---4-3-4 shift pattern at roughly 307km/190mi: after shifting to 2nd gear, move the wheel slightly back towards neutral, then execute a very quick 4-3-4 shift and turn the wheel back to the left at the same time you downshift to 3rd. This gives you a 2nd drift. Helpful if you're looking to climb up the leaderboard ranks, but it requires a fair bit of practice to utilize it well. I'm still not in the habit of doing this yet.

Beginner Course:

You should generally hug the inside of the track except when approaching the 3rd turn.

Sonic Wall turn: Downshift and turn as you pass the black and white sign with the face on the right side of the track. Most major corners in this game have landmarks like this that you can use as reference points, so get in the habit of doing that to maintain consistency until it's all muscle memory. As stated before, the basic approach for this corner is a 4-2--4 shift pattern. With proper technique, you should be able to maintain a speed of 307km/190mi.

Pit shortcut: It is possible to use pit road as a shortcut if you hug the right side of the road as you enter. In order to prevent the pit stop from triggering, your right tires must be on the metal at the edge of the road. They don't have to overlap the metal very much at all; they just need to be touching it. Challenge 8 for this course is actually a training exercise for this technique, as the cones are laid out in a line along the edge of pit road. It's not a perfect training setup, as they force you to use the automatic transmission and thus your speed/angle coming out of the 3rd turn will not reflect what it should be in an actual race, but it's still useful for practice. A visual aid you can use to help you line up your entry in an actual race is the skid mark leading into pit road.

You cannot pit stop on the final lap to begin wtih, so you don't have to worry about the entry angle into pit road in that case.

Exiting pit road from the shortcut: If you entered pit road at optimal speed, you should begin the exit turn roughly half a second after the TIME EXTENSION visual disappears. The shift pattern is 4-2---4. You should be able to maintain a speed in excess of 300km/186mi as you exit pit road without clipping the grass. You must maintain a drift until you're safely on the main, banked racetrack, or else you'll hit the wall.

Ideal 1st lap time: 17"00
Ideal 2nd+ lap time: 16"50

I'll try to post something for Advanced and Expert later, time permitting. In the meantime, you can always grab the replays for the leaderboards for some ideas. There doesn't seem to be any actual pros tearing up the charts yet, as I'm in 1st place on Expert at the time of this post. :p

Shame :(

I wouldn't judge it too much based off of that because not everyone that buys it will play the time trials. But even so, it's still pretty sad. :(

Well I did my part by buying it on both PS3 and 360. :)

Got this on 360. I'm in love. I was mostly terrible at Daytona and I still am, except for the Beginner track where I know how to geardrift the 3rd corner. I need to brush up on the Advanced course. There's no way I can do Expert well yet.

The online is adequate, not great but serviceable enough for me to want to continue to play it.

It's kinda weird but in the beginner track; when you turn and then ends up in that straight line with the casino slots rolling; the first few times I drove down that line I kept having goosebumps; it reminded me so much of when I was 15 years old and how my life was different back then. It was quite a nostalgic trip. Thank you Daytona USA XBLA!

Not sure how people don't find this game beautiful. Good god, man: Eye-popping color, 60fps, brue, brue skies--what's not to like? Sure, it's not as advanced as today's stuff, but the charm is off the charts, and the music is the cheesiest, most beautiful Engrish in the world.

Great game. Reminds me of why Sega was the king of arcades. I wish they'd release a "Racing Pack," sort of like they did with Gunblade/LA Machineguns on the Wii (another amazing port--and LAM has far more depth than I suspected--very addictive).

Give me Sega Rally 1/2 + Scud Race + Daytona 2 on a disc and I'd gladly pay $50.

I was wondering how they were going to handle the demo . I'm suprised they let you race on each of the tracks, I figured it would just be a timed run on the shortest track.

I don't recall the clouds/sky shifting so much everytime I moved my car. I can't not notice it now.

Everytime I play it I think back to when I first played Daytona. On holiday with my parents at Blackpool or Devon in the arcades with the sticky floors and crazy volume of different machines fighting each other. I remember when Daytona USA just came out and coming from Virtua Racing to this was crazy. Lovely memories.

I am off to my friends house this evening then, to try this game out with his wheel (I don't have the newer G series wheel)...Thanks for letting us know!

Got all the achievements just playing the game normally. Not a big deal but I think I haven't blown through a set of arcade achievements so fast.

Now its time to rank in on the leaderboards. I've broken 100 in one of them so far. I think it was survival beginner. My goal is to break the top 50 in most boards. Hopeing I can do that eventually. I'm finally getting the hang of Expert course. Now I gotta retrain my brain to play the same courses in mirror mode. So awesome.

I had a blast playing online last night, but I'd like to see more games created with the "RANDOM" setting for circuit so you're not just playing one of them over and over.

Ran into Sixfortyfive for a couple games. He's top notch. Was blowing the entire field away. That was my first run on Advanced in years, so I was no good.

Yea, played a few games with him last night and he was lapping people (including me). Doesn't help that I chose right in the beginning of Expert(?) and went right into the Pit. I really need to practice on Advanced & Expert. Although we did Three 7 Speedway in reverse and I was sooooo confused. Such a fun game.

I'm doing decent on the leaderboards at Three 7 Speedway - last I checked I was ranked 197. The other tracks are great but Three 7 has always been Daytona to me, I can play that track for hours (on top of the hundreds of hours I've already played on it).
