dbrand refunds PS5 skin pre-orders because ''You assholes' won't be able to apply them"

Here’s an interesting customer relations strategy from renowned console and smartphone skin slinger dbrand: it’s refunding all PlayStation 5 pre-purchases because “you assholes” won’t be able to apply them properly.
In an alarmingly candid Reddit post, the company explained that it has “no interest in selling a product that will generate a dozen customer complaints for every purchase”.

The organisation said:
“We’ve seen you assholes try to apply the corner of a smartphone skin. Trust us when we say you can’t handle an application that’s 9x the size.
Look at it this way: we regularly weigh the possibility of discontinuing AirPods skins altogether for no reason other than that you idiots can't install them correctly.
A ‘full coverage’ PS5 skin would be like AirPods on steroids.”

To be fair, the firm just doesn’t appear to be satisfied with how the test skins it’s created look.
Because of the unique shape of the system, it’s really difficult to design an adhesive that effectively covers all of the console, meaning you’re always going to end up with bits of white exposed. It posted an example of how its prototypes look, and it’s not particularly compelling.

“Our goal was to collect enormous sums of money in exchange for satisfying the consumer demand of making the PS5 not-white,” it added.
“The product we’re confident you can apply doesn’t deliver on that promise.
The product you have no chance of applying comes much closer to delivering on that promise, but again serves no purpose if the vast majority of you assholes can’t apply it properly.”

The company closed out by issuing a warning:
“If you come across the promise of a perfect-looking, full-coverage PS5 skin that’s just a few clicks away, remember this post. We can all but guarantee it’s going to look like sh*t.”
So yeah, looks like Sony’s probably going to have to flog those rumoured replaceable faceplates after all!

Well, most customers are idiots anyway so they're not totally wrong there.
Also, it's not best business to release a product that can look ugly with only a minimal margin of error.

The language is questionable but the reasoning is not.

EDIT: That said, they are ultimately shifting the blame on the customer for a product they aren't capable to manufacture.

I took that in honest jest and playful, that seems to be the brand’s image. And i’ll be honest, seems true. They look cool on those renders/examples, but ya know... applying them seems like a hassle, not worth the bad name of the thousands of impatient folk.

Like they aren’t right. Have you seen the average person? Lol.

Would prefer they just sell them anyway, and place some kind of ‘expert’ warning (not the best example, but like model kits, right?) for the customer to make their own decision.

people aren't assholes because they cant apply a sticker to some plastic. They may well be idiots, however.
They are if they blame the product for their inability to apply it correctly.
I'm assuming their customer service has been having some 'Nam flashback lmao.

Of coarse skins won't work, there's a textured pattern on it. Not to mention trying to wrap around the corners.

Applying this kind of shit to curved surfaces is a nightmare, I imagine. I used one of their products for my laptop and it worked out well enough, but I'm usually quite terrible at even doing screen protectors.

No wonder Linus keeps taking their sponsorship's, Dbrand being as straight as they should with their product. It's a simple thing, but something that would be cool to see more often.

dbrand's whole shtick is just being lightweight pricks while at the same time being cool as shit and making a high-quality product. They give out tons of these things to people just at random. Like if they're asked a question on Twitter or reddit or something they'll just hook people up.

they problem didn’t have the PS5 and made a design that won’t work now they got the hands on PS5.

It is not that it is too hard... it just their project is impossible to be applied on PS5.

They're absolutely right. I've watched professionals botch small decals on flat panels on industrial machines. Some dipshit trying to stick an adhesive decal to a compound curve with rounded corners like the PS5 will absolutely not be able to do it properly. It takes time, probably a good idea to have a heat gun, and even then there's a chance the decal starts warping as you apply it with heat.

For anyone wanting a solid color like black, why wouldn't people just paint it?

The sides come off easily and can be hung by wire. Paint is less than $10 a can. You can clearcoat it any level of gloss you want from piano black to matte. It's way easier than putting on an overlay and it will cover both sides of the side panels entirely.

I knew it!

Also center-justifying text is dumb. Just saying.

Btw the 360’s faceplates were easy to swap out what am I supposed to do with a permanent skin? Coming from someone with tattoos I think their focus is slightly relevant and don’t see the flaw in their store, I’m not worried if people can apply them or not.
