[Spoiler warning: The final two questions contain plot information regarding DC Comics' The Flash #22, available this Wednesday.]

Let the countdown begin, because Geoff Johns' story about 'The Button' is coming full circle this November with Doomsday Clock.

The standalone DC-published miniseries written by Chief Creative Officer Johns, with artist Gary Frank, will continue the narrative that began last year with his Rebirth Special #1, and more recently unfolded in a four-part arc in Batman #21, and concludes this Wednesday with The Flash #22.

Based on our exclusive reveal of the teaser image for Doomsday Clock below, the story behind Watchmen's entrance into the DC Universe aims to be, well, super. It is an understatement to say that seeing the Superman shield in the top slot of the clock from Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' seminal work raises questions. Intrigue is further piqued by the title itself, its "D.C." initials, presented in that yellow, bold Watchmen typeface -- and the word 'doomsday', the same name of the villain who famously killed Superman 25 years ago.

Liking the idea of Superman as the centerpiece here. He's been the best part of Rebirth, bar none.

But, as I've been going through a DC Comics backlog on Hoopla... Geoff Johns has got to be one of the most underwhelming writers I've encountered. I've never read a thing by him that wasn't forgettable. I don't really have faith in him to do Dr. Manhattan or any other bits of the Watchmen universe justice.

I love that Johns and DiDio can all but admit that the Rebirth #1 reveal was done purely for headline-grabbing shock value and that they didn't have an actual story idea for it until much later, and yet people will still defend this shit.

Y'all talk shit, but this is exactly the kind of shit Alan Moore would do.

It's not that he would hate it that way, it's more like "They fucking stopped me from using DC Universe characters in my story...and now they want my characters to be part of DC Universe!?"

Just go full DC at this point and make up something dumb like Harley was the real killer of the Comedian because there can only be one Joker or some shit like that

Been mostly out of comics for a year and have been catching up on a lot of Rebirth stuff.

It's pretty damn entertaining, so I'm in.

I don't know

Alan Moore would never in a million years take characters created by other people and do his own stories with them.

It's unthinkable.
Wasn't Watchmen going to be based on a obscure DC comics franchise

I'm going to assume that's the joke

I mean, if nothing else, it's a lot more interesting than Before Watchmen, which was essentially just marginalia that added nothing to the original work. So it's a step up there. At least in this case they're taking the basic premise of Watchmen - "Superheroes are awful!" - and jamming it up against the mission statement of DC Rebirth - "Superheroes are great!" Like, distilled to basic premise, that's a story that could have merit.

Sounds awesome. This might even end up being as good as when they integrated the Wildstorm characters into the DCU.

It was going to be based off of Charlton characters DC got from a lawsuit before they decided they wanted to use those characters for real after all.

But it's not the only time Moore incorporated other people's stuff into his work.

"When Rebirth kicked off, and I wrote the special and worked with all the teams, and all the books did their own thing, I talked to Gary, and said there is a really interesting story with Doctor Manhattan, and his point of view, and the intersection into what is the DC Universe. We debated whether we would ever want to do it, because it is a big job. We talked for six months, and the truth is, it wasn’t until the election, and post-election, that I called Gary and said, 'I’ve got the complete story.'"

Am I missing something, or is Johns outright admitting that he wrote Rebirth without an actual plan for the Watchmen storyline?

can you prove this though? otherwise you just sound salty.

Johns' quotes here about not being sure he wanted to do a Watchmen story until long after Rebirth was published are pretty strong proof of that in themselves - there isn't even an attempt on his part to claim "this is the story we've been planning since Rebirth, and this is where the slow burn pays off," which would be the standard PR line you'd expect - but there's really no reason to argue over it when DiDio all but confirmed it in a Vulture interview last year:

The overarching plot about the rejiggering of the universe has played a shockingly small role, meaning you can read any one series without having to pick up any others for context. That said, DC Universe Rebirth did drop one bombshell tease: Dr. Manhattan, a lead from the epochal 1980s graphic novel Watchmen, may or may not be responsible for the ways the world went wrong during the New 52. But subsequently, the powers that be haven't placed much emphasis on that development. Indeed, DiDio more or less admits the move emerged largely from a desire to get headlines: ”In today's world, with so much media, so much property, so much out there, you've got to do things that capture people's attention," he said.

Johns can write some simple, jaunty, "cool" stories, but he feels like the wrong fit for this. It's like getting Paul W.S. Anderson to remake The Godfather or something.

Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
I heard decent things about The Button. I'm cautiously optimistic about Doomsday Clock.

It's like getting Zack Snyder of all people doing the Watchmen movie

ahh. but it looks like they got something solid in the works.

I read a lot of them because review copies. They're almost all bad save Wonder Woman and Superman. New Superman is solid too, but pretty far removed from this Button nonsense.
I am sorry what. How can you say you read a lot of them then start with "save wonder woman"

You didn't even list the best rebirth books.

Maybe it's because I don't care that much about Watchmen (I mean it's great, but the context of history has kinda shat all over it sadly) but I am nowhere near as bemused about this as I was by the last several dozen comics events.

Or maybe because I'm just tickled pink at the idea of Geoff Johns actually taking the notion that "Watchmen made comics all shitty and grimdark" and is taking all the meta out of that statement. Because that's kind of hillarious to me.
