DC Comics announces "Doomsday Clock", starring Superman and some blue guy

i always thought watchmen was untouchable (even those before watchmen comics left a bad taste in my mouth). this just seems kinda grotesque but hey if its good its good

Or maybe because I'm just tickled pink at the idea of Geoff Johns actually taking the notion that "Watchmen made comics all shitty and grimdark" and is taking all the meta out of that statement. Because that's kind of hillarious to me.

Especially when Johns himself has written some of the grimmest, most violent superhero comics DC has ever published.

It's not that he would hate it that way, it's more like "They fucking stopped me from using DC Universe characters in my story...and now they want my characters to be part of DC Universe!?"
It's almost like time passes and things change and shit...who would have thought???

So I just looked up The Button, and apparently Tom King is writing Batman?

Is it as absurdly good as his run on Vision?

It took some time for him to adjust to making a bi-weekly action book, but when he's been on, he's been fucking on. It's a very layered series of slow burns that work as a study of Batman as a character and as a cultural artifact.

I love that Johns and DiDio can all but admit that the Rebirth #1 reveal was done purely for headline-grabbing shock value and that they didn't have an actual story idea for it until much later, and yet people will still defend this shit.

What are you even talking about? It was announced as a two year saga from the get go and Geoff was always going to write the main story but he was occupied with his film and tv writing. Do some actual research before you start complaining about how this was a publicity scam.

Nope. It ranges from bad to mediocre. Super repetitive. Almost no plot advancement after 20+ issues.

The best Batman Rebirth book was the Button one, and that wasn't written by King. I'm not surprised.

well, then ask Dan DiDio why he told Vulture exactly the opposite last December

Imo, watchmen would be worse with established characters. People would have complained about mischaracterization.

It's neither, unless you consider paper thin motivation and rehashed Bat Angst a character study.

I do dig the constant repetition of dialogue in attempt to add gravitas...to add gravitas...to add gravitas.
You're being really reductive, which really isn't a great foundation for a conversation.

I'm pretty pumped tbh. The Superman Reborn and Button arcs have been great, and DC as a whole is really impressing with most of their output. (Come on, Justice League, Aquaman and Cyborg. Pick it up.)

Comic books are weird, crazy and nothing is off-limits. All we can do is hope that it's great.

Naruto says hi.
I don't really follow Naruto but the sequel is about the new generation and the older generation aging right? It's seems different from what DC and Marvel is doing. Most Japanese manga series tend not to reboot or operate in a sliding timeline too.

I don't like the book, but I gotta agree King's run feels like a character study.

I'm not talking about reboots. I'm more using it as an example of the numerous things the series did towards it's long run and conclusion that completely botched certain characters and motivations.

"So the bad guys weren't really the bad guys? They were being controlled by one super bad guy? Cuz fate and reincarnation? WTF?"

Reductive? Nope. I stated I didn't like the book and explained why. You attempted Gafsplaining® that the book isn't about plot but instead a character study. That reductive opinion addresses none of my criticisms with the book, and starts from a position of error. I'd love for you to tell King how much you enjoy him ignoring plot and pacing in favor of the same themes we've seen for years in Batman.

First one is valid, though. Maybe leave them alone?

Eh, even if Before Watchmen was bad, if somebody can think of a good story that actually makes good use of the characters, there's no reason they should be forever off limits.

Again, it's not like Moore is an angel about being respectful with characters created by other people.
