Charlie Hunnam will lead the film as one of the pilots. [THR]

Rim is a monster movie that sees powerful extraterrestrial aliens threaten the Earth's existence, attacking cities and nations neighboring the Pacific Ocean. To meet the threat head-on, humanity develops giant robots to fight them off.

The movie is influenced by mecha, the Japanese genre involving humans piloting robotic constructs.

The details of the role is being kept secret although online details describe the character as a pilot of one of the mechas that needs to climb back into the driver’s chair.

First time I read up on this movie. Del Toro sure likes his animu, huh? :P Sounds like it could be awesome.

It would be cool if it they use some suitmation for the giant monsters.
Del Toro is one of the last directors who use it and it's a tradition of the genre.

I'm not interested in anything Del Toro does now unless the title has the words Mountains and Madness in it.

Good luck with that

Meanwhile, holy shit this sounds like a film I want. I hope it doesn't follow Sucker Punch and Battle: LA in being a vaguely videogamey sounding movie that turns out to be mediocre. del Toro taking on kaiju is interesting too, although I hope he knows how to design such monsters, and doesn't just create 100-foot tall creatures that look like they fell out of Hellboy 2/Pan's Labyrinth.

Ha, that's one hell of a change. Good for Stringer though.

Yeah, I don't know if Deadline is correct or they were thinking of At The Mountains of Madness.

Edit: I guess they were, Cruise was previously interested.

This is getting a lot of hype at the moment. Hopefully Del Toro can actually get it off the ground and start production in September like hoped.

So Idris Elba opposite a Japanese actress. If they're seriously going with two non-white leads for a big blockbuster release from a major studio, then that's fucking great. A film about serious military operations vs kaiju monsters is some kind of brilliant dream movie for me, only thing I'd be more interested in would be swapping out kaiju monsters for the Ring/Grudge like 'onryo' monsters. Seeing those kind of demons going up against lethal force would be very entertaining, in an Aliens kind of way.

edit: wow i already posted in here, hah

I agree. He's the only reason I own Takers.

Haha I just watched that movie like a week ago. Idris Elba classed it up. And Hayden Christensen's role and character in that film are just baffling.

I watched it with my dad. After the movie he just looked at me and said "that guy from Luther made everyone else look like children actors."

Sensi is one of the main character probably, not the main character. I'm guessing he might be an older pilot teacher based on the name which bears a striking resemblance to "Sensei"

Raleigh Antrobus is the main character as stated in the OP unless that changed.

charlie day and idris elba? im interested now. im hoping this isnt like eva though.

Oh, OK. It said 'the lead role' in Expendable.'s post, so I made assumptions.

Okay. How have I not heard of this film before?
Elba starring this film. Is unbelievable. Day one.
