Del Toro's Pacific Rim is the Godzilla movie GINO wasn't

Keeping my faith that Del Toro can make this at least fun. Not really a fan of his, but this might be up his alley.

Pan's Labyrinth is good but yeah his English language films have been awful. This idea just sounds too good to pass up though. God, I hope it's a legitimately good film.
A lot of stuff is awful regardless of language. I fucking loathed The Devil's Backbone. That was a damn mess. Pan's Labyrinth was solid though, and I really dig his producing efforts like The Orphanage and Splice.

Actually a long shot might be cooler, the one in The Avengers is one of my favourite things in any film for years.
He says one person, so it must follow just one of the pilots. I'd rather it be just be a long take that always has that character has the focus. First person stuff is almost always awkward.

I think he did a great job with both Hellboy films.

Can we expect a trailer?

That shot actually kills my hype. Why do they need armor if they are inside a mech? Looks like something out of spy kids.

Only shots of the monsters can restore my faith.

I'm not happy that these two are the leads though. Fucking Idris Elba and Charlie Day are in this film. I hope they partner up to control a mech.

Yeah, I don't care about Shinji and Rei . . . also those suits look like Mass Effect armor.

Want to see some robots.

Those power suits look frankly a bit cheesy and too much alike to the GI Joe movie for their own good. :P I hope they show us a trailer soon.

I want to see some mech stuff too but I think this looks fucking awesome. Still can't believe it's getting made.

EDIT:
Also, crazy pilot suits are half the fun! What's wrong with you?!

The suits are suits. They could use a bit of color, but whatever. What matters is the people inside the suits, and the big ass fuckin' robots they control with them.

Protective suits and armor makes sense in a giant robot that fights monsters in melees (they already said they use mix of close combat weapons and guns). This is not a jet fighter, when you have mutli ton metal behemoth smashing into things, your going to need a ton of protection. Would be worse if it was anime style, with people wearing skin tight suits and a seat belt will somehow protect you when you ram your huge multiton machine into another at 100mph.

Closest thing we'll get to a bit of Evangelion live action.

Kinda looks like they wanted to make an Evangelion adaptation and then changed some things and then one fanboy went all "if you are going to change so much why name it evanegelion ???" and they were like "...ok"

Del Toro hasn't let me down yet. It's a shame the Mountain of Madness film couldn't get off the ground but this film is the next best thing. Huge fan of Godzilla genre so I cant wait to see what awesome designs this film has.

Would they look better if they piloted the mechs in t-shirts and shorts? The suits are not that much of a surprise after the Elba pic.

I would expect flight suits or something a pilot wears. I would think there would be some kind of harness that keeps people locked in their seats. Why you need armor in a cockpit makes no sense to me. If you are being flung around inside a cockpit, something is wrong with the design of the mech.

It looks like they'll probably be locking in to the mechs via those metal things at the elbows and hips. I'd be surprised if there isn't another one on their backs.

I'm just bothered that they're all shiny and sexy. These are suits to be worn inside a mech during battle, not to dance around in. How about something that looks used and made for combat? That all seems like extra effort for no purpose, other than to make cooler action figures.

Why would you want functional realism over aesthetics in a movie about giant monsters fighting giant robots inspired by the awesome and badass world of anime and Japanese monster movies? It sounds like this might not be for you! If anything, I think the suits aren't sexy enough. They're kinda boring and plain, when they should be color coded instead, and be rubber/latex body hugging suits with cool decals and stuff from the organization on them.

A fight suit is for jet pilots who do not engage in highly kinetic combat. They have already confirmed that the mechs will be fighting in close combat with weapons like axes and such even potentially. Jet fighters and helicopters to not ram into things or get smacked around by giant beasts. Ever feel the impact of a car crash? Multiply that impact by what it would feel like involving clashes of huge multi ton machines. The suits also look to be part of the seats likely connecting to it and I wouldn't be surprised if they are part of the control mechanisms for the mechs

That's actually a good way of putting it. I don't think anything we've seen of this so far, from the suits to the logo (admittedly not a lot), are stylized enough. They're trying to walk that balance of future realism and being slightly sexy. It's not stylized enough and it's not practical or lived-in enough. It's in the awkward middleground.

Yeah, I agree there. I'm not really sold on the suits or the production design from what we've seen. What Del Toro keeps hyping up sounds VERY promising, but we've had 2 photos so far with pretty generic looking suits. Comicon better deliver... I hope.

Cinemablend:

The way that the mechs, called Jaegers in the movie, work is that two pilots are hooked up through a neural bridge and can control the machine with their own movements.

Makes sense for them to be wearing some sort of armored suit rather than the typical fighter pilot gear.

In addition to what's already been said 1) they're worn inside the mech so they're not going to get that beat up in normal operation and 2) aesthetics have a powerful effect on morale and PR and it probably takes all of five minutes to rub the suits down with polish. It's also common for contamination to be an important issue in these sorts of scenarios, so keeping the suits well-maintained and sterilized would be a necessity.

Or they could just be newly made suits that haven't seen use yet.

Exactly.
If I go to a movie like this I want to be transported to a world of pure over the top style.
