Del Toro's Pacific Rim is the Godzilla movie GINO wasn't

Where'd you hear that? Do they kind of look like gundams or something?

No, I mean they wouldn't look like Gundams, they'd look more like the mechs from the Matrix or Avatar or something. In other words, real robots instead of super robots.

He's a designer on the movie, here's what he said:

Yes, I designed the robot (Jaeger Conn-Pods) head interiors - the physical sets. Do look for Macross references! I tried to inject as much Japanese Anime sensibilities as I could get away with anyways! Unfortunately, the exteriors were already conceptualized before production started and all the LA concept artists seem to come out of the same school of rendering so everything looks like every other American designed robot. Plus its ILM doing the visual effects, so we've got a bit of that "Transformers" vibe going on - but much better ;-)

It's too bad the robots are going to look like generic hollywood mechs, ie. no real distinction to them.

I think a good style that would have fit in a movie like this would be something like the mechs from Fafner:

They're fairly simple and real world-ish but have that flair of humanoid mecha with distinct features.

Despite being a huge fan of GDT, since I was a fan of Benicio first (thanks Usual Suspects and Fear and Loathing), whenever I see "Del Toro" I'm always like "What? Benicio Del Toro wants to make At the Mountains of Madness/a giant mech movie/Pinoccio?".

Can't Hollywood make some effort to try and create this kind of atmosphere for a mech movie just once and see how it goes...?!

Grab someone like Shoji Kawamori (Macross), Ikuto Yamashita (Evangelion), or Hajime Katoki (Gundam) on board as a consultant or something...

That said...still looking out for Pacific Rim though =)

The robots in Real Steel looked pretty anime-ish. Something like that but a little bit more serious-ish wouldn't be too bad.

I expected something closer to a Sentai mech ...

Oh crap, I had a Bioman toy as a kid that was bought at Epcott center. I had been trying to find out the name of that thing for ages since I had long forgotten it.

This one:

Anyway, boo@the description for the robots of this movie :/

I'm willing to wait and see the designs of the mechs before I fully pass judgment. His passing comment about ILM doing the rendering doesn't mean anything when it comes to the actual designs. They obviously want this to succeed and perhaps turn into a franchise, so there's no way there's going to be ridiculous looking over-the-top mechs. But I think everyone is bailing off a little too quickly. Del Toro has never had a visually bad movie.

Del Toro gathered an all-star team from ILM and Legacy Effects. Can't wait to see what he does with a budget of this size.

All this talk of potential mech designs are all well and good.

But just think, if this movie is a hit we all get closer to WB making a Robotech movie(s).

They do? Why do the designs of Battleship, Transformers and Avengers look so similar than?

Someone somewhere had a hand in making the alien ships in Battleship look like the Transformers ships. I'm not sure who, but the marketing was pimping from the studio that brought you Transformers. I'm guessing an executive thought it'd be a good idea for them to look similar so people could get their Transformers fix.

As far as Avengers, that's your boy Whedon. Xia has commented somewhere about how much of a hand he had in the designs and the way things looked.

Battleship is also a Hasbro property. Universal/Hasbro probably thought "it worked for Transformers so it should work for this."

Since the first Trans, we've done robots/mechs/ships in Terminator Salvation, Avatar, Iron Man 1&2, Super 8, Star Trek, and Cowboys & Aliens as well as the 3 TF films and the ones out this year (Avengers, Battleship).

Also note Avengers didn't even actually feature robots/mechs, but as people are bringing it up I went ahead and included Super 8, ST, and C&A. May as well throw in Indy 4 while you're at it.

Del Toro said he wants to keep the world in the now (not too distant future) rather than a far off future where the audience has a hard time relating to it. This could influence the mech designs and Gundam looking mechs might be too futuristic. I'm just throwing out my thoughts here and have no real info at this point on the designs.

Looks like some GI Joe shit.

It kinda does.

I hope this movie is cool. Hellboy 2 had some pretty awesome and huge set pieces, so Del Toro has definitely gotten his feet wet with this kind of shit. If there's not a jaegerbomb joke in there somewhere I'll be disappointed.

Show something at SDCC please!

I am hoping for this as well. Del Toro loves Comic-Con so I am sure he'll do something this year. Keep an eye out for more goodies, they gave out Pacific Rim t-shirts last year. My fantasy if that he'll have a giant robot standing outside the con. Sounds crazy but they did that for Sky Captain!

I wonder why I didn't notice this move before! The premise sounds fantastic. Also, the plot summary reminds me - indeed - of Evangelion, which I just started watching, after GAF brought it up. Love the whole idea and concept of Evangelion.

But how come there is so little known about this movie project? Not even a teaser trailer as far as I can tell. I hope the movie release isn't getting delayed.
That's the first thing I thought of. I don't think they can tell that story in a single movie, though.

The robots are real machines rather than movie machines - gorgeous and functional at the same time. Each of the robots, when they step in, has their own personality. One has a huge spiky mace made of iron, and another has a giant battleaxe. You don't go, 'I wonder what his fighting style is?' You immediately understand what his fight style is!"

Guillermo actually went to his official fansite and clarified that quote about the spiky mace and giant battleaxe. He says, "Alas, the battle axe and spiked mace are misplaced quotes (my damn accent, I'm sure) I wont clear more for fear of spoilers- but the weapons are both melee and ammo. Anyway- The "cutlery" we have is pretty cool."

"We had a Tokyo scene that we shot here in Toronto. We had several Hong Kong scenes and a few scenes in Australia, through the television. We briefly see the kaiju take over San Francisco. The whole Pacific Rim needs a sense of danger."

"We take the battles far and above! Two or three of them happen in places where there have never been a battle between kaiju and robots. From the bottom of the ocean to the atmosphere of the Earth. We have a battle in a storm at sea. Every battle we try to do differently. One is seen from the point of view of a single person. We never cut away from that point of view."

Godddd that sounds fucking cooooool

Edit: and that quote about the mechs each having different fighting styles and personalities leads me to think they may be a little more stylish than the "standard army mech" that was described earlier. Maybe not full-fledged Gundams but something in-between.

I heard the scope of this film was just insane and it certainly sounds it.

I cannot wait to see something (anything) from this project.

TEASER TRAILER ME!

WB have a three hour presentation. I'm sure they'll find time for Pacific Rim.

It's going to be interesting (to no one but probably) to see if Pacific Rim is featured in WB's presentation (which it likely will be) or whether Legendary will have a separate thing for it.

I really, really hope we hear and see something from SDCC for this. I'm extremely pumped based on the Del Toro's passion and the concept alone. The huge budget doesn't hurt either. :)

Is he saying there's a first person sequence? Because that sounds amazing for this. I need more of that in my life ever since Kick-Ass.

First-person or just a long shot, that sounds awesome.

I'm not really a fan of del Toro. Thought the first Hellboy was mediocre, didn't see the second, and hated Pan's Labyrinth. But I like what I'm hearing about this movie.

Pan's Labyrinth is good but yeah his English language films have been awful. This idea just sounds too good to pass up though. God, I hope it's a legitimately good film.

Warner Bros., Legendary Pictures and Marvel Studios are readying a marathon of presentations for tentpoles that include "Man of Steel," "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," "Pacific Rim," and "Iron Man 3," that will all take place July 14 in the San Diego Convention Center's Hall H -- the facility's largest presentation room that seats 6,000.
