Demigod isn't technically "this year." Releases Feb. 2009.
at least its not among the holiday rush. I hope they implement what makes Dota so cool, the insane amount of heroes, everyone of them pretty much unique and the many options when it comes down to teamplay, lane control and itemchoice. It's not gonna be easy to top a mod that has been around (and polished) for as long as dota has.

If there's enough interest, we could try using Hamachi or Xlink Kai to setup a VPN for some MP.

For the next week you will be able to get into this phase of the beta. After that you will have to wait for Phase 2 (in like a month or two).
Things you should know about this phase of the beta: No online multiplayer, LAN and AI skirmishes only. 3 Demigods (Rook, Torchbearer, Regulus). That said they are recommending VPN tunneling software for those who want to play online (Hamachi, xlink), and there's quite a few setting up stuff on the official forums.

They may still be processing the previous pre-orders so it may or may not be instant. The second they charge you, you will be able to download. Also, you need Impulse to download it http://www.impulsedriven.com.
You don't need to have Impulse running to play after downloading/installing.
