Sanders is way too idealistic for me to believe he'll get anywhere, or the nomination. His actions and ideals appeal to the vocal youth culture but it's hardly realistic. Who knows if he will implement what he proposes? And of course, he's a socialist. Moving on.

Clinton is mediocre, but the least of the clowns here.

And then there's the rest who should just drop out by now.

Either way, Clinton or Bernie are okay, I guess.

Looks like I'm going with Bernie this election.

I'm fairly comfortable with both Hillary and Bernie at this point, although I'm hoping Bernie wins because he seems to be very passionate about his ideas and plans and they make a lot of sense. Hillary, while a safe runner-up, still has that high-and-mighty aura about her that turns me off and her ideas are more status-quo rhetoric than anything else. And I have just as much Clinton fatigue as I have Bush fatigue

I'm really intrigued by Bernie's idea on public tuition funding for college and Wall Street Speculator taxes. In fact, taxing the Wall Street guys is brilliant because it forces them to take less risks with other people's money.

There is nobody in the GoP ranks that even comes close to what I consider a viable American leader. Those people reek of bigotry, racism and elitism and I want none of that "'Murica" bullshit. The GoP is just so awful right now that you could invoke the "lesser of two evils" clause, even IF the Dems had nobody worth a damn. Luckily, Sanders is a perfect offset to the GoP dinosaurs. So there is no spiteful nose-biting required.

I hope he gains a lot of ground and can bring Clinton supporters to his side.

You will never get the exact candidate you want, because they have to appeal to more viewpoints than just yours. You can only vote for the one that fits you best, while making sure they're the right one to make a coalition and win overall. Anything else is detrimental to the values you claim to be fighting for.

So you're saying there's only one person I'm allowed to vote for because to fit all your criteria the only answer is Hillary Clinton? I guess I'm living in North Korea.

Sanders being a socialist president would not make America socialist.

It would probably ensure socialist programs currently in place are better managed since they've fallen to the wayside, and it would redirect corporate welfare into the lower segments of society.

That's pretty much all I can envision his moniker accomplishing.

Basically instead of spending basically a third of your taxes on the military, we'd spend it fixing our road systems and investing in shit that matters outside of picking fights with the rest of the world for corporate gain.

Yeah because expanded social security benefits, which those young kids will pick up in 40 years is all part of Bernie's plan to planning every event of their youthful lives even after he has passed away.

Thing about Bernie is I think he'll be able to get more people voting in the mid terms than Clinton. Trump has shown you need passion and bluntness to incite masses to take an interest in politics. Bernie excites the base for change more than Clinton with his wall street rhetoric under which he pinned Hillary last night, even if in macro both of them will enact similar policies.

Nope, I couldnt be less likely to vote hillary. I do not trust her when it comes ti crime and prison reform, wall street, business, drug reform, and war.

Shes barely a democrat.

Wasn't she the 11th most liberal senator during her tenure and would be the most liberal Democratic candidate since McGovern if nominated?

Was his brain functioning when he wrote this? There's just so much wrong in one tweet, and then all the work you'd have to put in to defending it. I can't imagine what was going through his mind when he wrote this.

"Carson keeps saying insane shit, and gets media attention... what kind of insane shit can I tweet about to sell more books?"

Didn't that just end 7 years ago?

Your proposal is to make millions of people suffer just so they can come around to your way of thinking eventually. How the hell do you pass that off as progressive? It's sadistic.
Honestly I'd take 8 more years of Bush over 8 years of the new Tea Party/Freedom Caucus Republican Party. It would be much less damaging to the country.

Socialism is decided by two things:

1. Who gets taxed by what %
2. What the taxes are spent on

Guess what? America has been a socialist country since 1933 and it was initiated by a Democratic President, Franklin Roosevelt, to end the Great Depression.

America is a socialist country and socialism has SAVED this country from economic ruin ever since. It is the only buffer we have against market uncertainty, natural and unnatural disasters and war.

The more public programs are supported by taxes, the better. And the more the rich are taxed, the better.

You got to give it a few decades and then you'll see.

Thanks to demographic changes, not anything particular about Obama himself, or the idiotic things the Republicans are doing right now.

I guess Obama might have moved up the window some by getting more minorities in the habit of voting.

Making Hillary the nominee because you (wrongly) think she is electable(the polls say otherwise, Bernie does better) is the very definition of putting the (presumed) candidate (Hillary) above the issues(Bernie). Cheebs. I don't know how many times I have to correct you. You play the fool more than others. That's alright, because remember guys and gals....Everybody plays a fool, sometimes. There's no exception to the rule.

Go easy on Cheebs.

In most PPP polls now, Bernie is doing worse than Hillary is in key swing states and nationally (the only pollster that's actually doing consistent state and national polls).

http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/main/2015/10/trump-holding-steady-nationally.html

Bernie Sanders on the other hand does an average of about 5 points worse than Clinton in the general election match ups. He trails Carson 46/35, Rubio 42/38, and Fiorina 44/38 while tying Trump at 44.

This idea that he's somehow more electable than Hillary is a fantasy.

Is there anything Sanders could even do with Executive orders to influence citizens united or break up Wall Street conglomerates?

SC justices at the very minimum, maybe something about making FBI focus more on finance-related crimes rather than piracy or aiding the DEA or any of the other things they do.

edit: i'm also not very well versed in executive orders, so don't take my word as the final say.

Is this really argued in earnest?

I think the rhetoric that Bernie is absolutely, unequivocally, unelectable is more common and also fairly inaccurate. That's not to say his chances are great though...

I don't see it as bad at all when you're comparing him to someone we've all known for nearly 25 years. He hasn't had the same amount of media exposure are the GOP candidates yet.

I'll be curious to see these numbers after a few debates.

Being short-sided is to think they are falling apart honestly. They had a huge landslide victory just last year.

And no, they aren't going to nominate Trump or Carson. Rubio is the safe bet for the nomination. GAF's beloved Nate Silver says he is the the odds on favorite to win the GOP nomination for example. People thinking the GOP is imploding despite having major major victories just last year and thinking they are going to nominate someone like Trump or Carson are not looking at things clearly.

Falling apart just means just to be in turmoi or be in pieces, I wasn't stressing how much just that the party is in turmoil which 3 of you wanted to take to an extreme like it was a death blow to the party and they could never recover.

Various powershifts since the clinton era. Establishment since bush hasn't been able to be as focused, organized or as united around one candidates as they were around other previous nominated candidates. Can't control anti establishment candidates. About to lose their gerrymandering card as the nation swings more to middle or left. Yeah they are falling apart they certainly don't have that republican golden rule thing going on anymore, nothing but corporate or theocratic vipers vying for control. It's happening you want to argue degrees go ahead I was saying it as a simple premise. Their victories mean jack when most of their bigger goals implode or fizzle out like they keep doing. The party isn't what it was 10 years ago let alone 20.

For the record I wasn't talking about who was going to be nominated and I haven't outside of a troll vote on trump, wasn't being serious about it. I'm with you on rubio especially since bush lost his standing, only other would be Kasich in my book anyone else would be a genuine surprise.

His head to head numbers against the Republican candidates have been going down recently. I don't think there's any evidence to suggest he would now perform better, since he was unable to argue exactly what socialism is last night besides "I'll talk about it!"

Five points is a chasm in politics.

Are the banks playing both sides? What? No, not at all. Bernie Sanders is pretty clear about his postitions for these last 40 years... he's been against big banks and wants them all broken up.

Clinton said, as a representative of wallstreet, she went to the big banks before the 2008 crash and said " hey cut it out!!". "Cut it out?" That's what a parent yells to a child she can't control. She was in a position of power to do something but she told her friends who helped her campains, cut it out and then bailed them out. Make fucking legislation and stop them with policy.

https://youtu.be/WeZI3lhnOKg?t=1m

the exact quote she said was:

"I represented Wall Street, as a senator for New York"

She became secretary of State in 2008, so there's not much legislatively she would have been able to do at that point, since it was late 2007 when she supposedly went to Wall Street and scolded them. Dodd-Frank passed after all, so there's that.

Right off the bat, Rush Limbaugh says the entire debate was a total joke and one of the worst he has seen in over 30 years and that the democrats basically admitted being a socialist party.

This guy...

I don't know if anyone north of Kentucky has ever heard of them but Rick and Bubba were talking about how the debate was the most terrifying thing they'd ever seen on television and no doubt the ratings would tank compared to the Republican debate since America is apparently in love with their deep bench of candidates. How there was a bonafide Communist on stage and he's actually a top candidate has to the biggest reason to never vote democrat ever again. Of course they're big Carson supporters so yeah. Their audience would never vote for a democrat anyway but it's just infuriating to hear that crap on the radio. I wish there was some left leaning or even centrist people on talk radio.

Would like to see a post debate poll. Unfortunately that poll is a week old now.

And what would happen if he's still down compared to Hillary in Republican head-to-heads? Do we just need more people to get to know him? I love Bernie. I think he's great. I don't think he's someone who could win a general election in our current system, and polls show that. No amount of "more people just need to see what he's about!" is going to change that.

Unless he's up against Donald Trump, he'd probably lose to most Republican challengers.

This right here. Don't think of em as animals or they'll cut the power after killing your dropship pilot and leaving you stranded on some desolate chunk of rock. Game over, man. Game over.

Even if you take the republicans are dying claims completely a priori their still not a spent force. Even if the right in America is fading and will continue to do so, something I don't think we can be complacent about, as they currently stand they can still do tremendous damage to the cause of liberalism that could last decades. Replacing RBG with a republican nominee could almost stop progressivism in it's tracks for a generation.

I'm curious how many GAFfers are actually registered party members and participate in primaries.

*Waves* Every election since I turned 18. I'm an anomaly though, I've been following politics since I was quite young.

Depends on who you ask. Hillary and Bern both did well. O'Malley at least got his name out there and had a few moments. The other two ... well. They were there.
