Desert Vista High School students spell out racial slur on t-shirts

Feel like the world took a giant step back at some point.. or maybe it's just from being from Seattle.. I graduated high school nearly 20 years ago and no one would have done any shit like this back then. We had racists but they were incredibly unpopular and were likely to get their ass kicked for it.

I feel the same way. I went to a high school that was 14% Asian, 31% African-American, 12% Latino, and 34% Caucasian. Most cliques were diverse, and everyone got along pretty well, outside of the occasional fight.

I guarantee some people here have seen it on the news. There's a crappy porn star from it and it was also on worldstar when a parent trying to start a fight because his daughter was getting bullied got knocked out. I wonder if things have changed in the last 12 years since I've graduated.

Combine teenage immaturity, with an isolated homogeneous privileged community, ignorant racist parents, and just a bit of stupidity and this is what you get

i dunno, they could just be girls giggling around about being "naughty",

i wouldn't really call them racist or pieces of shit lol, or atleast not yet

There's not some '3 strikes' rule here for spelling out a racist slur on your bodies and getting photographed laughing about it. It's a racist act by racists.

Maybe they'll learn.

But not if the only reprimand they get is 'gosh it's just kids.'

It's amazing how much something dumb they did is attracting so much attention, as if no one's else ever did dumb things in high school.

I was assuming the Cardinals are the reason you don't like the state of Arizona considering how harsh you are towards them. I was just joking anyway. We actually have an ocean about 4 hours drive from me in Mexico.
No, I was mainly commenting on the frequency of news/politics coming out of the state having racist undertones.

Besides, the Cards aren't good enough to make me hate an entire state, don't flatter yourselves.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/racist

how do you know this of them?

is ur definition different?

being a dumb insensitive highschool girl isn't the same thing as being racist

or is it?

So to you, using a racial slur doesn't make you a racist? They have to say white people are superior to black people?
So you would only think they were racists if they also put up a sign that read "blacks are inferior"?

You can be dumb and insensitive without being a racist.

It's a racist act by racists.

im seriously surprised by the people saying this,

you guys honestly think they did this to intentionally demonstrate what they think is their superiority over the blacks?

like, how does this automatically mean they must be racist?

So you would only think they were racists if they also put up a sign that read "blacks are inferior"?

thats correct, cuz that shows they're demonstrating something thats actually malicious, and not some teen dweebs just trying to be taboo.

i dont even think being indifferently to the plight of an oppressed group of people means you're inherently racist towards them, and thats a much worse crime than what these girls did,

again, im not saying they're not racists, but this picture isn't damning in the least to that end for me

This looks like 6 girls deciding to do something dumb for the "lulz" without thinking of the reprecussions.

Glad they got suspended, but I don't want to see their lives and futures ruined for this though.

Haha ok ok. Guess we'll find out Sunday just how good they are.

Arizona gets a bad rap about certain things and for good reasons like our immigration policies but it's not as bad as many people think. #vote4marijuana2016

So I assume you go around using that word regularly because it's not a racist word. How does that work out for you?

They aren't kids.

They're high school seniors. They're old enough to know this is wrong.

They're racist enough to do it.

Umm, yeah, they are. There's a reason they're called "high school kids" and not "high school adults". 17 year olds don't have anywhere near fully formed adult brains and have zero real world experience.

Not that this excuses what they did, but this is just a pet peeve of mine.

Shit dude, don't bother. You know people like him are all up in arms over defending the mistake of some witless white teenage girls without giving the rest of the kids their age that manage not to be *THAT* stupid due credit. And all the while, nothing is said about the black kids in the school who might feel ostracized and degraded of this stunt.

Also, people are worried about universities not accepting these girls over this stunt? What, do you think grades and SAT scores would be a better metric of intelligence compared to a bad decision of this scale? Get real.

man I don't even get this...?

It isn't damning in the least.....!?

the word is offensive to people and brings them discomfort, and i understand why, so no i dont go around using it

i just dont think its a word that automatically makes you a racist if you use it, that doesn't mean i dont think the girls should be punished for their insensitivity, they absolutely should, and if they have a history of racial issues in the school then bring the hammer down on them

They're honoring their friend Erin, they're just standing in the wrong positions! GO *ERIN*!

I dont understand your position, are you saying they are a racist for using that word? Or that they are being dumb and insensitive without being actual racists?

At 17 years old you should know by now that this is wrong. I don't know why people keep using their age as an excuse. Did you guys do shit like this in your high school? Is that why people are so defensive?

It takes some medal-winning mental gymnastics to assume they didn't know what the word means and represents when they spelled it out on their bodies and photographed themselves laughing about it.

I mean, just what is a racist to you? Do they need to be wearing red armbands and doing a nazi salute to qualify in your world? These girls thought this racist prank would be hilarious enough to share on the internet. They're racists, fam. They might grow out of it but I wonder why people are so gunshy with calling out fairly obvious racism, cuz I guess feelings could be hurt or something if you just up and use that word 'racist' so willy nilly. Gotta be careful with that shit, right?

Their act was malicious. They were not discussing the word in an academic setting. Anyone who uses the word is a racist.

the word is offensive to people and brings them discomfort, and i understand why, so no i dont go around using it
If it's not racist then I give you permission on behalf of all black people to call us it. Make sure you explain to the person you're calling a nigger that you're not a racist because you don't think black people are inferior.

You can literally wear a shirt that spells out nigger and STILL have motherfuckers defend you from being called racist.

holy shit being white must be swell

On Twitter, I think the woman that first reported it (not sure on that) Tweeted the picture @TCU with the caption "your future students seniorPic" and then the names of all the students. She also tweeted it @NAU, @cnnbrk, @TheRevAl, @HowardStern, @maddow, @TODAYshow, @12News, @abc15, @GMA, @FOX10Phoenix, and @CBS5AZ. That woman is out for blood.

A lawyer is outing them?

They were actually just paying homage to a 2pac classic but the girls whose shirts spelled "Strictly for my" are just out of frame.

It's a really racist thing done by people who I don't know - my inclination based on how flippant this pic is that obviously, yeah they are.

It doesn't even really matter whether they "ARE RACIST" vs "INSENSITIVE TEEN"; basically these kids have households that have never explained to them why something like this is wrong, and their parents probably don't see it like that either.

Basically - I'm expecting a "My kids aren't racist, we don't subscribe to that, we love all people - they just made one mistake"; For once, I'd like people to come out and be like "Yo - that was mad racist; I have to look at myself and examine why I did this, and realize that I might be, in fact racist. Understanding this, I can work to see the world in a better way/make it better"

A lawyer is outing them?

Yeah, she's a lawyer. I think the story is that her child goes to the school.

thinking a race is inharently superior/inferior to another

im much more leaning to them being dumb highschoolers wanting to be naughty, then them wanting to put down another group by claiming superiority
Highschool seniors are still kids but they knew what the fuck they were doing. Just because they were doing it for laughs doesn't change a thing. The level of ignorance displayed by them is astounding, but, as it's commonly said: "It's no surprise."

That's not the full definition of racism, just a apart of it. Look up the term in the dictionary some time.

thinking a race is inharently superior/inferior to another

That wasn't the question. What does it take for someone to qualify as a racist to you? I mean it sounds like you're setting the bar fairly high, which lets a lot of the subtle racism and maintains an awful status quo just skate by as 'kids being kids.' Nobody can read someone else's mind so saying someone isn't a racist unless you know for a fact that they think themselves as racially superior means you're never, ever going to find a racist in your life. You have to look at someone's actions and words, and in this case we have both. It's a cut and dried example and you are blatantly looking the other way. It's super gross.

At 17 years old you should know by now that this is wrong. I don't know why people keep using their age as an excuse. Did you guys do shit like this in your high school? Is that why people are so defensive?

Because 17 year olds are fucking stupid and do stupid things. That doesn't mean they are free from criticism or discipline, it just means it's not shocking when they do stuff like this.

And yes, I knew plenty of kids in high school who would say nigger to get a rise or a laugh out of others because it was and is inherently offensive. Some kids thought it was funny, some thought it was offensive. All of the ones I'm still aware of grew out of that, though, as they became actual adults.

"They're just teenagers so this is okay"

Nope. Sorry hun.

Whos saying this is OK? The debate here is whether or not this was a real declaration of racism or teenagers being stupid and insensitive.

I plant my flag firmly in the later. They were suspended, and I think they should probably have to make some kind of apology to the black students at their school.

Some people in here seem to want this to completely fuck up their lives by keeping them out of college or following them forever, which is absolutely ridiculous.

alright guys, i genuinely admit that the term racist apparently doesn't mean what i thought it meant and that it encompassed alot more than i originally thought

all i can say is my bad on this one

I feel I have to comment on what pieces of shit they are...

Also so this thread will pop up again when the inevitable public repercussions come out.
