Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

GG leaves you vulnerable for a second or two if you activate it in a fight.

I'm curious about the other hunter super, the Arc Blade or whatever it's called.

So. What's the difference between the classes in reality? Are there roles in the game? Im a slut for healing so if there was a heal-move I'd be all over that in a second. I enjoy assisting my fellow people.

This doesnt seem like that kind of game though. Is the skills listed somewhere perhaps? With the alpha out I assume they are?

So many questions

EDIT: Tribute avatar is go!

Please excuse spelling errors. I am tired and on my phone with autocorrect turned off.

Just got done playing for roughly 6 hours with only two breaks. I streamed everything from the first boot to right around 10 minutes before I actually got off. These are my impressions:

  • The controls feel slightly unresponsive to me.
  • The sparrow looks and controls like heaven.
  • The ability to call it in whenever I want it is great.
  • The skyboxes are Bungie quality (very good)
  • The TTK in PVP is too low. It needs to be more.
  • The turrets on the Moon are stupid, very OP.
  • No way to change the colors of clothes, gear and sparrows? Needs to be in the full game.
  • The character customizer is one of my favorites. You can get good results easily, and you don't need to spend forever changing every little thing.
  • The gun designs aren't really varied.
  • Some of the guns sound weak.
  • The dynamic matchmaking is amazing.
  • When "selecting" a player to invite to my fireteam (R1+L1) I would typically waste my abilities in the process. That should be mapped to something different.
  • Public events are cool.
  • Very low amounts of ammo in some areas. I ran out of everything more than once and had to kill myself to get more.
  • Challenging when it needs to be. Sometimes, I feel a little too much.
  • Framerate is solid. Locked 30 everywhere that isn't one of those space loading screens.

Overall I like the game a lot. I don't really like the PVP though. It just isn't very fun for me. The open world/story part of this game is where I plan to spend my time.

Now to sleep. I will stream everything again tomorrow.

So I was kindly given some codes yesterday and was able to play the Alpha last night. To be honest, the time absolutely flew and what I though was two hours had actually been nearly five.

First of all, the game is fun. It reminded me of my first split screen co-op games on Halo CE or the first times I played Halo 3 online 4player co-op. A good co-op game has been missing from the PS4 library until now and it was a blast to get back into shooting stuff with friends.

Technically the game seems really solid. We had no network issues, no lag, joining each other was easy and we all stayed together wherever we went. Other players came and went in our world in a natural way and it never seemed to glitch or lag to spoil the suspension of disbelief.

The game looks great. Basically the lighting and the day night cycle make the game look stunning. Areas have a completely different feel depending on the time of day. What looks fun to blast around on a sparrow in the bright sunlight can be spooky and intimidating at night. It makes the already large world feel even bigger. Interior lighting is really nice. Dynamic shadows really help the atmosphere when your fireteam is sneaking about. The shadows can actually help you fight enemies too as they can give away their positions by silhouetting them on the walls.

I was a bit worried about the sound design prior to playing. In some of the videos guns sounded weak and lacked punch. I don’t know if they have beefed things up or if it is just a different experience playing than what you hear on youtube, but I don’t have any concerns anymore. The sound design is really cool. It all sounds original, but you can definitely tell this is made by the same people as made the Halo sci-fi explosions.

Gunplay is very solid as you would expect. It feels tighter than Reach. There is bloom, but it doesn’t seem to be as intrusive as Reach, it doesn’t slow you down as much. Each weapon class feels distinct, and some feel awesome. I am switching between using a hand cannon and a pulse rifle for my primary. Secondary’s are useful in almost every firerfight and I am finding myself switching back and forth with my secondary and primary throughout a battle. Add the grenades and the supers as well as the heavy slot and there is a real variety to the sandbox. As has been said elsewhere, it feels familiar to you if you have played Halo, but this is it’s own distinct game. Different yet familiar.

I have played the mission, the strike and quite a bit of open world wandering.

I need to go back and play the mission again. It acts as a tutorial of sorts so now I know the sandbox more, and I have levelled up, I want to see how it plays a second time. On my first run through I was pleased to see the A.I. being tough to fight, it plays much better than it appeared to in the leaks. For an intro mission it does get pretty touch near the end. I was close to dying for pretty much the whole of the last encounter, and only made it through by the skin of my teeth.

The strike was really cool. It is pretty challenging and it where my firetam probably had to work the hardest to coordinate and communicate with each other. You are keeping each other up to date with where you are with your supers, who has a grenade ready, who needs ammo and who needs picking off the floor. It took a while to get through a few of the main encounters, and we dies quite a lot, but just like Halo the encounters are playing out differently every time, so it never felt like a chore to replay a section. In some of the more intense parts, you have to work together.

The open world stuff is where I will be mostly playing I think. Its just fun to see where you end up. There are so many paths to follow, and little openings you can easily miss that lead off deeper and deeper into the map. The little encounters and missions you can pick up are fun, and there is always something to do, but the difficulty change between the strikes / mission to these activities is maybe a little too easy. A few of the public events are challenging but the ad-hoc missions never seem to be. There are also a few missions that seem to be over before your start, the objective is a bit too simple sometimes. I also wish they would put a longer timer on the enemy respawns in the world. I guess it is really hard to balance, with other guardians wandering around the map, making sure that people have enemies available to fight at all times, but sometimes it feels like you turn your back and they have respawned.

Before playing, I was not sold on the idea of loot. It just didn’t appeal to me, I wanted to pick a gun and just use it. But having played now I am addicted. Seeing others out in the world with fancy gear, does make me jealous. They said it a bit in the previews and I never bought into it, but I love this aspect of the game. Just wish the level cap could be increased so I could use some of the fancier things I have found.

Overall I love what I have played so far and can’t wait to get this working day over and get back into the world.

Got an e-mail: Your Beta Code is Inside

It's just Battlefield: Hardline -_-

My disappointment eclipsed my hype for a second.

Haha! I got in the Hardline beta but I have yet to play it after trying it once because I just soak up every bit of footage I can find about the Destiny alpha...

I thought you selected a player with R3 to invite them to your fireteam. That was what I was using.

If you are running out of ammo, you can buy one use ammo replenish kits from the gunsmith in the tower. I only found this just as I was finishing up last night.

Thanks man. Just out of curiosity which class to you like the most?

Nope. It is that combo for me. I am using bumper jumper if it matters.
I did. I use tons of ammo on higher difficulties. Soloing devil walkers takes a toll.

You will be even more disappointed once you try Hardline. It's very ho-hum.

Really hope I get into the Alpha. Seems like now that people actually got to play more of this game the excitement is really setting in. All the messaging so far has just been really poor about what this game actually is.

I played Warlock for 97& of my time. I also played Hunter. They're basically the same outside of powers, armors, and who you can talk to at The Tower. I do want to switch to Hunter for the double jump, as Warlock's "hover" isn't very easy to control.

Haven't played the Titan but I do like the ability they get.

Quick question, is there a map when you explore? And I wanted to know if the cursor is responsive when you select something in the menus. I saw that in some videos and thought the cursor might be unresponive.

Pretty responsive. Not sure on maps outside of the Tower. You can get maps in the tower by going to these guides that are at various corners.

Thanks. Was gonna go Warlock then try hunter. Would you say hunter is the easier of the two?

Ok, thanks. I wanted to buy a PS4 only after P5 releases. I really hope that there will be people playing this on PS3, including Gaffers.

Impressions part 2:
  • The gestures/dancing are awesome. I wish there were more of them.
  • The Tower is a fun place to just hang out and do random stuff with people.
  • I like the third person switch at The Tower.
  • Voice acting is flat. It isn't bad, but it isn't very good. I don't like the ghost's voice at all.

Hunter has the golden gun. Golden guns are really overpowered (1 hit kill on everything). They are also more agile with the double jump and boost. The Warlock's powers and melee are also really overpowered. They're pretty much the same though, so it's hard to say.

Hovering while shooting sounds like it could be hard, usually is. Is it? Was that the issue you had with it?
No, that was fine. I would often just have trouble moving while floating. I would want to change direction or go up a little more but couldn't without dropping all the way down and starting over. Hovering feels really floaty.

There is an upgrade to the glide ability that gives you more control in the air, let's you change direction.

Just completed a strike mission.

We had a third guy but he decided to bail at a certain point (no spoilers) and we had to complete the last two bosses on our own and by god was it fun. Why on earth didn't they show the last two bosses in the strike video is beyond me because they are really fun and challenging to face off against.

I've got a list of problems I've encounter but overall I'm still enjoying it, really have to play the game to get the full value of what they are trying to do with it.

My twitch page has ~6 hours of footage from when I started to when I got off.
twitch.tv/visceralbowl

Thanks. I feel like I'm reaching the point where I want to keep myself from getting bored from watching 20 different people do the same missions over and over again before I even play it myself once. :D
I just need to get a key later today and I'm happy.

Question for those who saw Sony's E3 Conference at direct movie theaters... When I entered the code on the back of the VIP pass, did said it will email our codes today? It was late night when I entered the code and don't really remember what it said.

Yup it did. So you should be getting it this afternoon. I'm also awake now. Everyone who applied to the clan/group should be approved. Remember if you want to join the actual clan you have to go into your settings on the alpha site and select to be a part of that. Otherwise you are just a member of the group.

Anyone else who has logged into the alpha and wants to join search for DestinyGAF.

On my phone so it's a bit difficult to cut the post down, but I believe there are armor dyes at higher levels, and you can lock on to other players with R3 and then send invites friend requests, etc from a menu brought up by the Options button.

Played for 3 hours yesterday and the best compliment I can give the game is, it's taking every fiber of my being to not call out sick from work today. That's how badly I want to continue playing.

For the people that are already playing the alpha. What are your impressions of the enemy respawn rate? I've been watching stream, and it seems like the respawn is very fast. Basically seems like you will get respawns unless you move on to another area vrtualy immediately after killing a group of enemies. Is that you experiencs as well? If it is, I hope they change it, because I can see myself getting tired of killing respawns anytime I linger in an area for more than a minute.

Yup they respawn fast. I actually really like that as it ensures you have plenty of things to kill. Don't worry you can explore pretty easy even with them respawning.

Game looks really good.

One thing ruins it for me though and will continue to do so when i play the game. Peter Dinklage. I have nothing against the guy and am a big fan of his work; however, hearing his voice completely unimmerses me, all I can imagine is him disinterestedly reading lines in a booth.

I wish they would have gone with a lower profile voice actor.

Anyone having this issue?
100% this.
Besides his performance, I hate when a supposed AI says things like "I have a bad FEELING about this!"
You're AI.

Anyone tried playing this on VITA?

I feel they respawn a bit fast also. It's usually not an issue though because of all the other players around you.

watching a video, i realized control is actually a hybrid of Team slayer and territories; you still get all your points from your kills but your points are a function of how many zones you control.

Weird!

No different to any of the other supers. I've seen Warlocks and Titans rip it up, the only things that Hunters have with GG is the range.

Are the other Supers not also pretty much one shot kills if htey hit close enough?

the other supers seem like an easy 1 (in m ost cases) kill. the golden gun has three shots for 3 skilled kills, but none of them are as easy as the win button for the other classes. seems at least somewhat balanced by skill

GG leaves you vulnerable for a second or two if you activate it in a fight.

I'm curious about the other hunter super, the Arc Blade or whatever it's called.

looks similar to the other supers. hunter dashes forward and swipes a massive (360?) arc of the blade. seems to have the area effect of the titan smash (?) super

One thing I was wondering is if some weapons are exclusive to some classes. Like can only the Titan have rocket launchers or can anyone? I like playing anti-vehicle so that might sway me away from a Warlock.

You can use whatever weapons you wanna use regardless of your class. There are no class-specific weapons.

I guess the problem is making sure there are enough enemies to fight. Say you have player A and player B.

Player A wanders through an area, enemies are there and he kills them all and moves on.

Player B comes through the area a minute later. If the respawn time is not really short he wouldn't see anyone to fight.

In theory you could move, following player A, a minute or so behind, and the world would seem completely empty. So the quick respawn means player B always has people to kill.

Its a weird balance to try and manage. It must be hard.
