Destiny: Exotic weapons fixed.... and then broken.

Making MMO systems with no experienced MMO staff while ignoring 10+ years of MMO development is probably the first and biggest problem.
I don't agree, Destiny wasn't supposed to be a MMO, but a FPS with an online environment and, honestly, they did dodge most of the mmo crap really well, the only annoying thing was the materials grinding.

I see people that are really into the game and think that there must be something to it. I've gone back a few times now and I still don't see why so many people play it. The story is mediocre, missions are mediocre, the gunplay is just about the only good thing about it. It's just a really polished mediocre game imo

Currently you can buy as many legendaries as you want once you hit rank 2 as long as you have the marks. But yea when the expansion hits you'll be able to buy 1 piece of gear at rank 3, one piece at rank 4, one at 5, and so on...

I think I like this new method but they should decrease the exp it takes to rank up. I always thought it was kind of stupid before where you grind to level 2 rep and then buy all of your gear that bumps you up like 5 levels. The progression was not even at all. This at least seems to try to even it out.

Agreed.

Question though, can the exotic be upgraded to tier II without being fully leveled? If so, probably best to stop leveling right now...
Yep

Kind of answered your own question. The gunplay is fantastic. I still have lots of fun just shooting things in this game after 100 hours played.

Well except for the Reputation grind, the gear grind, the fetch quests/kill wave quests, the currency grinds, the material farming, the random loot that has a chance of being a material, they definitely nailed that MMO crap really well.

Except for the whole 'Hey reset your gears progress in order to use it in the new stuff, and then re-level it all over again!' That's a new one.

At this point I'm laughing at how absurd this has all gotten--"let's introduce MORE forms of currency!" This is the loudest I've heard people complaining since release--and rightly so.

I wanted an overhaul to the entire game's structure a la Reaper of Souls, where they introduce a completely different endgame/meta. Instead, we're getting new elements that only serve to pad out the meager content being offered. Huge bummer.

So you bought that "shared-world shooter" marketing line that Bungie cooked up, huh?

Only if we're guaranteed a commendation each level - the wording from Bungie is ambiguous and leaves it open that it could be a random drop.

If commendations are not guaranteed upon faction rank increase, then fuck that bullshit. Seriously.

This is insane. Wow.

It's actually worse than that, since there are three types of rep to earn: Crucible, Vanguard and Faction; there are three factions.

Crucible gear requires Crucible marks and rep, earned in PvP. Vanguard gear requires Vanguard marks and rep, earned in PvE. Faction rep is earned in both PvP and PvE, but only Crucible marks can buy the gear.

I don't play PvP but didn't understand this and rocked a faction item thinking I could buy stuff with either Vanguard or Crucible marks, since I could earn either Vanguard or Crucible rep. I went up a couple ranks and then realized I had one currency (rep) but none of the other (marks). Several weeks of playtime down the tubes in terms of progression.

Now it's going to be even more convoluted.

Comendation system is ridiculous.

As for the Exotics, if I trade in a fully upgraded Mythoclast or a "blank" one, I have to spend the same and I'll get the same thing back, with progress reset?

This is simply unnaceptable. Upgrading our wepons so far was actually the wrong thing to do then?

For real, though. They skipped out on most of the GREAT features in MMOs.

Just read the OP. Hmmm

WHAT? Fuuuuuuk yooooooooooo Bungie
The grind was a pain in the ass to level up the exotics in the first place. Getting strange coin through constant nightfall is a hassle too. Uggggghdowoejndnejdndd!

Now with that out of my system... I'm fine now. Though, I can image the even more vocal reaction from my family members who play regularly. Omg I'll never hear the end of it :(

http://www.bungie.net/7_The-Dark-Below-Preview/en/News/News?aid=12442

that's the post directly from Bungie clarifying things. the exotic weapons still work the way the original article stated.

And yea, this is a horrible way of doing it.

"Primary weapons will only drop in the harder version of Crota's End, released sometime in January"

that is terrible really. i was excited about getting new primary weapons from new raid straightaway, i don't understand the delay til january.

Nope, I played the game.
And thank goodness it didn't draw from MMOs. In fact, lots of mmorpgs could learn a thing or two.

I'm pretty sure WoW and A Realm Reborn have absolutely fuck-all to learn from Bungie's unlimited bowls of vanilla ice cream game.

I just got to Vanguard Rank 2 and am about to by my first Legendary. Now I won't be able to get another until I'm all the way up until Rank 3 and get this dumbass commendation... so ridiculous.

I was actually sort of enjoying returning to this game but this kills a lot of my motivation.

I'm going to sit here, stick some tobacco in my pipe, and I'm going to listen to your explanation on how MMO's can learn from Bungie.

Please, enlighten us.

it'd be great if I could play Destiny, and have one of two options:

still be able to play with my friends without being in a race to level up so we're near the same capability.

or

be able to play and level up without needing a fucking graduate degree in Destiny leveling and RNG to know whether or not what I'm doing is helping me level, and when the public event is happening, or if the gunsmith is selling rifles for the one time this month.

just one of those two things

Sorry, but I totally disagree.

Destiny wasn't supposed to be a MMO, yes, but its been mired in all the WORST trappings of MMOs since the very beginning.

Hell, the game's levels and gameplay are nothing like traditional FPS because it follows the MMO structure. Hence, why the game's missions are one horde mode after another.

The material farming yes, a lot of other things though, you would do while playing.
No dead-times as in mmorpgs etc.
You guys must have played pretty good MMOs... my personal experience with traditional MMOs has been very different than playing with Destiny.

Bwahaha, I did the same. That moment when I realized I needed Crucible Marks...

Also, an amazing post from the Destiny OT:

It sounds like every Exotic will have two versions, standard and elite.

You can roll with standard and be perfectly happy.

Or you can pay Xur for the elite edition.

So it's a perfect parallel of Destiny and the Season Pass

'You would do while playing'.

That's a gratuitous way of saying 'You have to keep doing the same content over and over again in order to earn these currencies.'

And the repeating the same poorly lacking strikes and missions day after day....I have logged over 100 hours < i like the game but I still see how flawed it really is. Can enjoy a flawed game, and destiny is very flawed.

Case in point. Umm how about you having fun? If you had fun doing it, then who cares, you'll have fun getting the new stuff and/or upgrading your old stuff again. If you didn't have fun doing the old stuff why the hell bother playing the game?

OH yeah, I had SO MUCH fun banging out those mundane and banal missions over and over again. PLEASE!

Why did I do it? I did it so I could have fully upgraded weapons for the better parts of the game. Now the game tells me all that tedious and monotonous work was for nothing.

I just can't even fathom the clusterfuck of currencies, materials, RNG and other assorted shit. And of course once House of Wolves roll in we'll get more of this crap since it's clear their plan is to reset progress at every DLC.

I got the season pass, and after House of Wolves I am done with Destiny and Bungie.

Dude, then stop playing the game if you are not having fun. The level cap will keep increasing and items will become obsolete. That's just how it works.

Right, but after a certain point, the PvE missions DO become grinds, because they're all there is to do. I wonder if there are stats on how many times I've played each Strike.

With most MMOs I've played, the leveling/progression system is intrinsically supported by the amount of content available. Occasionally you have to grind to get to a high enough level to enter an area, but for the most part, they are designed intelligently: your level organically matches where you "need to be" in the story/missionset.

This is the question of the day for me. I don't waste time in this game. I get an exotic and max that thing out quick. I grind and do bounties for all 3 characters, trading guns and making sure it gets all the exp it can. Now my 300 is being treated like I just bought it? My effort and time mean nothing? Who decided that this is ok? Who are they trying to appeal to with this kind of logic? I can see Bungie now...

"Hey day 1 Destiny Supporter, we see you've been putting in some work. You're a couple hundred hours in and those guns/gear look great!! We want you to pewpew to the max so when we drop the DLC, we're going to give u a chance to enhance some of those guns you've been busting your ass to level.

We know how much u enjoy the gameplay...so as a favor were going to drop the exp on the gun to zero! Take this as a moment to really dig in and enjoy the new content, repeatedly, as you've been doing with the existing content. We know u can do it guardian! And trust us, once u get that gear up to level 32, you'll thank us. GODSPEED!"

Sigh. And the first thing I did when I get home? "Xbox on....go to Destiny". The fuck is wrong with me?

Yep! Its all part of just keeping you on a grind leash so you have to keep playing the game. Its a completely terrible way to maintain player interest. Instead of a stream of continuous engrossing content they just keep giving you more menial and grueling chores to do so you can never "finish".

OH and there is nothing "wrong" with you for going back to the game. The reaso why people keep doing this is out of a compulsion to see all their hard work as not being in vain. After all, if you quit now, wouldn't all that effort you spent upgrading be wasted?

Its a twisted, lazy and malevolent system, but an effective one.

I believe I am Vanguard rank 8. Does that mean I will have 5 commendations at the postmaster when xpac releases, or do I start earning commendations at rank 9?

From the Game Informer piece that revealed the need to reset exotics to progress them:

While it was exciting to dig into Destiny’s first major expansion, one of the most striking aspects of my visit to Bungie involved the conversations I had with the team members. Specifically, Bungie’s approach to playing their own game is surprising; Bungie developers play the game alongside all of us on the retail servers, and don’t cheat to get ahead.

As a result, I was surprised by how many of the developers piped up with their own frustrations at Destiny before I even mentioned them coming from the community. Like the broader game population, several Bungie devs bemoaned the tedious work of farming for destination materials in the launch game. Another spoke about their frustration at waiting for raid boots to drop in the Vault of Glass after weeks of fruitless attempts.

By engaging with Destiny side-by-side with the gaming community, the developers at Bungie are more than aware of the places in which Destiny still struggles. In many cases, I heard from team members about how eager they are to see specific changes go in that will improve the experience.

Deej: How do these players feel about having to reset their hard earned exotics? Are they happy about it? Do those views in any way reflect the huge backlash ongoing?

Please reconsider this plan. It's alienating the players that most enthusiastically supported the game.

Dude, then stop playing the game if you are not having fun. The level cap will keep increasing and items will become obsolete. That's just how it works.

There is no reason for the items to become obsolete and there is no justifiable reason to require "upgrading" the them.

They should just automatically buff the old stuff when the cap is raised. I've never even seen another MMO do this.

I've been working to gear up all my characters the same so no need to swap weapons. What a waste of time, and when the DLC hits I guess I'll never try it again and keep swapping, because the next DLC gonna reset again for sure.

Hey Bungie, please let me access vault from space, save me loading into the tower constantly just to swap weapons, which seems to be encouraged.

And before somebody says 'Well that's what you do in all MMOs!'(Strawman, watch out!)

Not..really. You can do Raid finders on WoW now, but to do the heavier stuff, you need a group of people. And you get intimate with this group of people, you learn each others strengths and weaknesses, you grow together and form a bond. You beat your buddy to that piece of gear, and that becomes a story. You continue to group together weekly and progressing within a difficult raid until you beat that difficulty, then do it again harder with even more mechanics added in and more tension-adding gameplay. Even if they release a new tier of raiding with even better gear, it's not about the gear levels that makes a difference in a raid-It's about how well you know your tank, your healers, your DPS. It's about knowing how far they can go without overextending, about how well they can burst down that add, it's about doing it together as a group.

In Destiny they try to have a facade of 'Well you can only do this with your friends', but in the end it's as easy as going on some website, forming a group within 10 minutes(Because in Bungies endless wisdom they didn't realize this would happen and didn't implement matchmaking), and clearing the raid within 45 minutes.(Edit-Sure, you can form a Raid right now with random people in WoW, however not knowing each person and how they react will lead to failure more than not. In contrast I banded together random players from 4chan, and we made it to the last boss on release day within a few hours in Destiny) The sense of progress is lost, the camaraderie between people who know each other is lost.

Destiny tried to achieve that. And people are pissed off because the only thing that matters in this game, the Gear, is being affected. Maybe a small minority cares about their group, and will keep doing it, but for most, the issue isn't friends or skill that prevents them from beating a boss, but gear. That is one of the major issues with this game. It's why everyone gets up in arms when radical changes to gear like this come through. Because Gear is #1, not that bullshit Bungie spouted about exploring the world or meeting new people, because both those experiences are stifled.

"Primary weapons will only drop in the harder version of Crota's End, released sometime in January"

that is terrible really. i was excited about getting new primary weapons from new raid straightaway, i don't understand the delay til january.

To make sure we find all of the Cheese strategies (for them to patch) before they start handing out the Crota version of the Mythoclast.

It only resets if you want the 2.0 version. You can stick with the original if you want. It's like doing Nightfall with a weapon that has 280 atk...it's not the end of the world that people are making it out to be.

You ever try to LFG hard mode raid without 300/300/300? Youre looked at as lower class by all Garudians until you reach that pinacle.

Even then, if youre a Forever 29 (like me), you feel utterly stuck. Getting to 30 (IB is not an option, fuck the stupid crucible) is nearly impossible because no one wants to team up with someone who will bring the team down.

I believe I am Vanguard rank 8. Does that mean I will have 5 commendations at the postmaster when xpac releases, or do I start earning commendations at rank 9?

Sure.

No, you won't.

People grinded factions to 3 or higher to be future proof. This was at the beginning. Bungie knows this. So they add another layer, which makes your rank moot. You'll have squat. And those commendations, well, I guess its for one sale. So you need to completely rank up again for a second item. Or a commendation drop is RNG, but I doubt this.
