OH yeah, I had SO MUCH fun banging out those mundane and banal missions over and over again. PLEASE!
Why did I do it? I did it so I could have fully upgraded weapons for the better parts of the game. Now the game tells me all that tedious and monotonous work was for nothing.
And before somebody says 'Well that's what you do in all MMOs!'(Strawman, watch out!)
Not..really. You can do Raid finders on WoW now, but to do the heavier stuff, you need a group of people. And you get intimate with this group of people, you learn each others strengths and weaknesses, you grow together and form a bond. You beat your buddy to that piece of gear, and that becomes a story. You continue to group together weekly and progressing within a difficult raid until you beat that difficulty, then do it again harder with even more mechanics added in and more tension-adding gameplay. Even if they release a new tier of raiding with even better gear, it's not about the gear levels that makes a difference in a raid-It's about how well you know your tank, your healers, your DPS. It's about knowing how far they can go without overextending, about how well they can burst down that add, it's about doing it together as a group.
In Destiny they try to have a facade of 'Well you can only do this with your friends', but in the end it's as easy as going on some website, forming a group within 10 minutes(Because in Bungies endless wisdom they didn't realize this would happen and didn't implement matchmaking), and clearing the raid within 45 minutes.(Edit-Sure, you can form a Raid right now with random people in WoW, however not knowing each person and how they react will lead to failure more than not. In contrast I banded together random players from 4chan, and we made it to the last boss on release day within a few hours in Destiny) The sense of progress is lost, the camaraderie between people who know each other is lost.
Destiny tried to achieve that. And people are pissed off because the only thing that matters in this game, the Gear, is being affected. Maybe a small minority cares about their group, and will keep doing it, but for most, the issue isn't friends or skill that prevents them from beating a boss, but gear. That is one of the major issues with this game. It's why everyone gets up in arms when radical changes to gear like this come through. Because Gear is #1, not that bullshit Bungie spouted about exploring the world or meeting new people, because both those experiences are stifled.
