I sort of wish I hadn't read the reactions in this thread. I'm not sure people understand what's going on here.
The new expansion has +10 magic swords in it. Your current sword is +5. Rather than tossing your +5 sword in the trash, there's an option to upgrade it to +10. Get it?
More like Grindtiny.
And I wanted to touch it again with this patch.
Wrong. The alternative is simply letting us commit one additional Exotic Shard to our vanilla exotics in order to bring them up to date with the latest expansion.
Instead we're having to do that AND losing all XP & material progress made on the piece. I'd almost rather have microtransactions than this hollow player retention bullshit.

One is an issue since anyone spendings exotic shards should get them back before the dlc is out.Well, one is that people already wasted exotic shards upgrading a gun that they need to reset later anyway.
Two is that resetting means losing the perks, which is the only reason why all exotics outside of the Icebreaker are useful.
Your old exotics went from 260 to 300. Once you've given them to xur and the progress is reset they start at 302 attack. You are losing nothing except for the perks and in exchange you get to use your favorite exotic for a new raid. Seems like a win-win to me.
It might as well be. "Reset your progress or keep your useless weapon."it's not a forced choice
Not sure if there's a newer post, but DeeJ's Twitter says that Game Informer's description is accurate and people are reacting "wrong."
:/
Upgrading old items to make them relevant to new content is cool by me. Telling players they can stick the grinding they did to upgrade current version of item up their butt is kind of insulting though. And that guy's tweet telling people how they should feel is downright infuriating.
no. Theres an option to throw away your +5 sword, get a +0 one and spend all that time leveling it up to +10. Get it?
You should work for Bungie with that condescending attitude.
That's not a cool way of talking to your player base. not at all.
Why would they instantly allow you to full damage output with a reforged exotic?
I already have a shard from breaking down an exotic last night. Why would I expect to have my mythoclast at 373 or whatever right on the 9th?
I continued to be amazed that people had no clue what they were getting themselves into with a loot / MMO style system such as destiny. There's going to always be a grind in these games.
As far as I'm concerned this isn't bad. Reforging a weapon sounds like it doesn't reset the damage you leveled, but allows you to increase the cap. The trade off is having to work through the attachment perks again. That's the give and take, and it doesn't sound unreasonable.
Now if they started your exotic back at 270dmg... OK. But from what I'm reading that's not the case.
This sounds like a good compromise. It should be, turn it in and it's reset or give Xur 7000g and keep your progress.
There's no difference between a standard sword and a +5 sword. As a matter of fact the standard sword will reach +10 faster and more cheaply. Get it?I sort of wish I hadn't read the reactions in this thread. I'm not sure people understand what's going on here.

Except, the "perks" are the only thing that make these guns Exotic. Thorn, Gallarjorn, Bad JuJu are all weapons that have very uniquer perks to them. In some cases the weapon is rendered useless without this perk.
You can still keep your current Exotics and not upgrade them.
They won't be that great with the new higher level content but them's the breaks.
Complaining that you have to put in the work to get upgraded gear is pretty stupid.
So if I got a Suros Regime a couple days ago what do I do? Do I level it up tonight or do I have to wait?
I won't pretend to know as much about game design as Bungie but this seems like a really convoluted way to go. Why couldn't you find a device that simply creates another damage node on your weapon? Why all this back and forth with weapon exchanges, glimmer, and two fucking exotic shards?!?
And holy shit what are we getting for all that ascendant energy we wasted?
Thanks for the jab, but the new sword you get will be +6, not +0, and then you'll level it up to +10.
I'm actually trying to be helpful here.

I'm totally new to MMOs. I had no idea that game companies make games worse in order to make up for lack of content. That's my bad I guess. You get it, other people don't seem to. If you didn't have to reset anything, people would be maxed out the day the expansion drops and complaining where the content was. It's thin enough as it is, the grind is there to give you something to do.
Well, here's the thing. Even if you waited to upgrade it, you have no idea when Xur will sell the upgrade for the gun. You could be waiting for months for Xur to allow you to upgrade the Suros. So if I got a Suros Regime a couple days ago what do I do? Do I level it up tonight or do I have to wait?
Wait I have to level up all my exotics again and buy shitty exotic shards from Xur?!?
Nope.
