Destiny |OT28| Nolan Beyond

I know everybody is really excited for this Twitch stream or whatever it is coming up but I feel like I have to express an unpopular opinion...

Why do we want all this info, really? Why is it good to have as much information about a game you're getting as possible, before it comes out?

I get you. I don't watch trailers for movies I know I'm going to see. Haven't seen any Star Wars: Force Awakens trailers/screenshots/nothing. It's been hard. But I think it'll be worth it.

These Destiny streams are a bit different. They're almost like investor calls. This first one is the most interesting to me because it's here's how we're handling your currency and (exotic) stocks and we're renovating our (tower) HQ.

Another point is that Bungie has done a terrible job explaining their systems in game. They've made tremendous improvements, but if you went in blind, would you have any clue what Prison of Elders was? Or why there were 4 difficulties? It's nice to hear these systems explained straight from them.

Finally, Bungie knows about the magic of exploring and going in blind, which is why they didn't show any story for HoW & only one mission for TK. Definitely nothing for the Raid.

I don't want to see the strikes or the Raid. I'd be more than glad not seeing any armor or weapons, or anything that could be labeled as "content".

I feel differently about systems and economy though. I love being surprised and the thrill of exploration when consuming new entertainment. But when there are mechanisms which will affect the game as I currently know and play it - weapon balance, currencies, inventory management, character/gear progression and the like - I feel surprises can only be detrimental to the experience.

Imagine dismantling your Fatebringer a week before HoW launched because you thought it'd be stuck at 300 and the 365 gap would be too large. Suddenly discovering Etheric Light wouldn't have been surprising in a good way / it'd be frustrating. The way it was frustrating to rush our Exotic level ups before TDB only to realize that was basically a waste of time a week later.

It might seem like a pedantic distinction superficially, but I think you can rationally make the case that, contrary to pre-release previews on new content, explanations on how different systems will change can only be regarded as a net positive for the player base.

Now, if you're approaching this from the angle of making a decision as to whether or not you will purchase it- informing you as a consumer, to be able to gauge whether or not it's worth the money you haven't yet spent- I totally get it. It makes sense to consume as much media as it takes and get as much information as needed to be confident about your decision.

But I know for a fact that many if not most of you are already buying The Taken King. Wherefore cometh the desire to know as much as possible about it before getting to play it? Is it the concept that having a "headstart" (not having to learn as much when you actually first play) is more valuable than being surprised? Or is it more of a compulsion, like you can't not learn as much information as is available, whether or not you want to?

It's totally not unique to Destiny by any stretch of the imagination. I run into this all over the gaming world with games I'm invested in, and in movies too to some extent, and it always baffles me.

I know I can't be that much older than the average age in this thread- does anyone else remember what it used to be like when a game you were interested in came out? Before gaming was the kind of industry that could command video interviews with developers and users didn't expect full spec sheets (how many levels? how many weapons? how many maps? how long will it take to beat?) to be standard fare even months before release. To this day I still love the feeling of sitting down with something new to explore and having barely any idea of what to expect. I feel like we stopped chasing that feeling- in fact, you'll have gamers get seriously upset and feel like it reflects very poorly on a game if you don't have an incredibly clear and detailed idea of what's coming before you play it- and even though I understand a lot of things about the industry, I don't understand this one.

I won't be watching the other streams, but want to know all of the QOL changes so I can prepare appropriately. Otherwise, I agree with you.

I watching because I haven't bought the game yet. I want to know about the tower and economy changes. And if I do buy the game I want to plan my gameplay over the next three weeks to be ready for the new economy.

I want to be surprised by the story and the strikes and the raid. But I want to know about the light leveling mechanics and the gear upgrade paths.

So you haven't bought it yet- that makes a lot of sense to me as I was trying to say. My bad, I meant to specifically ask people who had already put money down, like I have.

I mean let's be real---it's highly unlikely I won't purchase TTK but I have not preordered it. Even if I did, I want to know what is changing and what is different. I don't care about seeing all of the environments, weapons, bosses, etc., I just want to know how the gameplay, economy, leveling, upgrading, etc. systems work. How the game works.

Specifically for this game Bungie has historically done a bad job explaining how their systems work in-game, so if I were to go in blindly I might not actually ever discover or know about things they show in the stream without some help from DGAF or others. Remember Exotic Upgrades at Xur?

I actually think BO3 beta will stifle the numbers somewhat, there's quite a strong crossover in terms of playerbase. Strange they'd do that since they're both Activision products.

This is actually one of the few games where I like to know certain things about it before going in. Really the only reason is for QoL. My vault is so packed with weapons and armor, I want to know if I should keep things, get rid of them, or have them ready to be sharded.

As an example of this: since we know about the shaders / embelms, I've deleted lot of my dupes, assuming that since I have one, I'll be able to get another if I want for a nominal fee, thus freeing up space, and allowing me to collect other ones I like.

Other games I've gotten or plan on getting (Bloodbourne, Batman, MGS5, Halo 5, SW:Battlefront) I don't want to know much about them, just because I like the surprise and exploratory nature of games.

I don't plan on watching the other 2 streams mainly because they are going to spoil content that I'd rather discover on my own. That being said I'm not going to go into complete blackout, but I'm not going to actively pursue the info.

Rolled my newly acquired HP with third eye, braced frame, and secret round. Think I'll keep it. Only took a couple rolls. Nothing stops this hype train.

The games could not be more different.
They're still multiplatform Activision-published ultra high budget first person shooters though. The games themselves are quite different but the target audience has enormous overlap.

Just read through any thread about the Beta, anywhere, and count the comparisons to Destiny Supers with the new Specialist abilities.

Ditto.

I also want to see what mats/bounties/rewards/etc (if any) I should be building up over the next month. I must be prepared.

I mean the games don't have to have the same gunplay and mechanics to cross over guys. I don't think it's a reach at all to suggest bungie is pulling playerbase from COD into destiny. I mean look at their vanilla destiny ads. They were aggressively going after the COD crowd.

So I opened twitch and then remembered how is a twitch chat for a massive stream.

Can you please invite me to the GAF chat? My twitch username is the same as here.

I doubt I'll be able to watch much here at work, though. I will try to follow along with the chat and this thread, then tonight after work I'll probably watch the VoD.

I was in the same spot, have done all of this in 2 weeks thanks to GAF :)

Skolas is hard on 33 but when Drizzay is on your side... Skolas has no fun :D

Ok-I'll try to level up, and then see if I can get a day to myself away from the wife and kid to knock this out....

I mainly want to know the details of the new levelling system out of curiosity. What's really happening to our old legendaries and what do they dismantle into? I'm curious about the Light levels in the gear.

I want to know what the value of running VoG and Crota will be once TTK releases.

Otber than that, I want mostly everything else to be surprised. I don't want story or raid info, at all :p

I think I'm up to date now.

thanks, rodiard!

I bought the set too. Just finished episode 15 last night. It's really good.

yeah, i have that to finish watching too. finished Tenchi Muyo - War on Geminar last week. I have Hunter x Hunter to finish, then have to catch up on Fairy Tale. I don't even want to say where i am on One Piece or Fullmetal Alchemist... :/

I also started watching Yona of the Dawn, which looks to be really good too...
hmm... watch? or sleep?

So anybody here "Space Dandy" fans?
