You guys talking about "wanting everyone to just be happy" are delirious.
Mostly all of us crave competition. Thats why we play these games. We dont' want everyone on a level playing field. We want the rare shit, the stuff that 'sort of' shows that we played the shit out of this game and this is what I have to show for it.
The exotics aren't anything special. 90% of them have a legendary equivelant. We just want them because they are "exotic", not because they make the game more fun.
The only exotics that are truly unique are the IceBreaker, Gjallarhorn, Pocket Infinity. And two of them have been on sale already.
Bungie's vision on every exotic having a story is partly true. I have a story for every one of my Exotics. I got the Gjallahorn for beating the Archon Priest this week. I got Truth for beating the Nexus nightfall.
Those stories lose a lot of luster when they are.... "I bought this from Xur."
I got my Plan C from beating Talus without an arc special weapon last week; I got Thunderlord for beating my first Nightfall. My Knucklehead Radar, I purchased with currency I earned through weekly heroic strikes, engrams found gamewide, and public events, and saved up. The "exotics have a story" concept really applies the most to Exotic bounties, which are legitimately a progressive ordeal to acquire as evidenced by the many posts in these threads about the trouble people have had in the Crucible along the way, desperation for the Gunsmith to sell blue fusion rifles already, postings asking for help with Xyor, etc. Regardless, anyone could get, for example, Gjallarhorn from losing a match of PvP. The argument that "any given exotic should be statistically rare, difficult to obtain, and only available to certain players" is nullified by the game's core design, with the exception of a select few. Building a collection of exotics is crucial to any player's enjoyment in Destiny and that includes casual players who will take longer to do so, but still have the ability
"mostly all of us crave competition"/"we don't want everyone on a level playing field" This is a broad swath of gamers you're speaking as the representative of. I crave competition in PvP, but
would prefer everyone on a level playing field, because that would mean the competition was based solely on skill. Meanwhile in PvE it's only a bonus to me if I'm in a game with someone who has the specific items they have always dreamed of. The kicker here is that the raid legendary armor, weapons, ship, shader and sparrow
do meet your "we played the shit out of this game and this is what I have to show for it" description. The same actually goes for the IB gear at present. Just because they aren't exotic rarity doesn't mean they don't count. Most players will never come close to seeing a Fatebringer or Timebreaker in their inventory.
Your isolation of the "only 3 truly unique exotics" is laughable. I assume you're only including weapons, but there are no other guns like Thorn. Invective is a full auto shotgun that regenerates ammo. The Last Word literally has entire animations that no other gun is privy to and is handled differently than any other hand cannon. Bad Juju has a completely unique buff and is instantly recognizable. Patience and Time is a sniper rifle that cloaks and takes you off radar when you zoom down the scope. The Universal Remote is a shotgun that goes in your primary weapon slot. The Mida Multi-Tool boosts your movement speed and has its own radar. You can go ahead and attempt to tell me my Hawkmoon isn't unique, I guess, but even the SUROS Regime is incredibly unique in appearance and sound compared to other auto rifles. And we all know about the Mythoclast.
