Destiny Reveal Thread

That sounds great. Day/Night cycle confirmed? That's one of the aspects of MMO's I really like and if it can be taken into such a scale, would be really nice.

and seamless space travel since there's no loading screens, right?

not only that, they designed the engine to provide seemless space to terrain transitions.

The oneofswords article actually describes the games pretty well. He seems to have internalized a lot of the info and organized it well. Oh man, if Bungie manage to pull this off:

Man that sounds good. If Bungie is able to deliver that...

Something interesting to note, he said it was a "public area", so probably an unrelated side quest/mission/rade. This leads me to believe that story areas/missions will be "private areas", so only you and whoever else you choose to have with you experiences those gameplay segments.

That could work just fine for the singleplayer.

So there are instances for groups and public missions? What if the place in the example is filled with thousands of players? Can't imagine that.

Ah see that's where matchmaking comes in! It uses the same sauce from Halo matchmaking to find similar skilled players in the same location as you and matches you up "in a game", it's seamless to you, though, and you just seem him or her run in and help (or hinder?) you.

There's no ingame? I clicked on the polygon threadn and left disappointed.

Night and day cycles? Does this perhaps mean that the game uses a standard time? Could the location of the Tower be related to an actual location on Earth in terms of where it is in it's cycle?

Wonder how that'd work for the other planets. Could be a really cool feature.

Took a few of those new B.net avatars, resized them and added the Destiny logo. For those who want them:

So this public instances will be scaled/limited in terms of possible players I guess. Sounds all good to me. I hope the day night cycle isn't real time. :o

I'll actually be surprised if there are no microstransactions. The Sessler video makes a good point. It sounds like a huge investment both in development costs and the online infrastructure for them not to seek alternative sources of revenue.

Consider the fact there is no subscription fee, there is an apparent heavy emphasis on character customization and loot and it's a cross-gen title. Activision would probably be walking away from free money. Also consider the fact that if the 2014 release is to believed that is coming late gen after the likely release of next-gen consoles. Top that off with the fact that there will initially be a limited install base for next-gen consoles. It only seems logical that they might try to use microtransactions. It's not like they can sell a $20 online pass if the game is entirely online.

Except the real gameplay shots, it looks really good. The vistas and lighting are stunning - it really looks like a living world. Maybe one can just travel around as a merchant?

What an ehhh reveal. No specifics on anything important, no meaningful gameplay footage. It has great art and pretty good graphics, yay?

I'd definitely rather that the game look Halo-esque than feel Halo-esque (in a mechanical sense, of course), but hey, it's still Bungie, I guess.

thanks for that,

um, looks just like halo to me. Well, I think the next gen versions are the ones to get then. Bit sick of the current gen visuals.

It's an all multiplayer game, think about it like that. Starting a multiplayer game while offline is pretty useless.

But if I can do missions solo why do I need to be online? I guess that's what I'm not understanding. Is it just so I can switch to co-op at any time for a mission?

My partner has our PS3 and his internet is not consistent enough to play always online if they're going to boot you to the menu each time. We had to give up the Star Wars MMO because of infrequent 5-30 second drops. If it turns out the game just freezes until the connection restores, that's at least tolerable.

No, this is pre-alpha stuff. Footage is very old, apparently.

What? I hate when companies do this. If they reveal with old footage, it's their own fault if it gets judged harshly for looking rough. Same with Witcher 3. No one forced them to reveal with 'old footage', in rendered in the 'old renderer' or whatever.

Was expecting more...hopefully they release something new in the next couple weeks. I wish there would have been at least a trailer, showing some gameplay, the worlds, fighting something, anything..

If i was a journalist that was invited to this reveal i'd be pissed.

You brought me out to waste my time and my companies expenses on travel for THIS???

Jeff Gerstmann talked to some Bungie employees and they seemed surprised that the press weren't much more than concept art. I think they're holding back for the 20th.

Not true. Marathon was on Playstation 2.

I suppose I would be surprised if Destiny was shown on Wednesday.

I think Oni is a better example there. I've never played Oni though, it always seemed super dumb.

Loading screens / Mission start cutscenes, transition things.
According to the Polygon feature, Destiny won't have any loading screen:
Bungie is careful to emphasize that Destiny's new networking technology is fundamental to its shared-world shooter experience. Chris Butcher, technical director, boasts that Destiny has no loading screens, nothing that will take players out of the experience. The connections between players will be invisible to the user, he says, thanks to "complex but totally hidden technology."

Like what I'm hearing. The world sounds fascinating to me and I can't wait to dive in. I do wish we could have learned/seen a bit more, though...

Holding out hope for next Saturday!

According to the Polygon feature, Destiny won't have any loading screen:

That doesn't eliminate them from being what he suggests though. The term loading screen is loaded. What Bungie likely means is there will be no static image while a loading bar progresses.. what we'll see is a short FMV sequence of ship travel from one destination to another while the loading is conducted in the background. I want to say MGS4 was like that as well.

The mobile/out-of-game integration, especially if it delivers compelling, possibly ARG-like ways to integrate with the game as promised, could be very interesting. It hasn't really been fully utilized like that before, even though I've anticipated something like it for a few years now. If successful, it could be one if the emerging trends for next-gen.

Adopting Dark Souls-esque networking methods/tech is just following the trend. This being the first example outside of Journey and the Souls series to enact it though, so an early adopter. I think we'll see a lot more of this multiplayer concept next-gen. Watch_Dogs hinted at doing something similar, for one.

I'm quite disappointed that they seem to have no plans to release a PC version. Just seems kind of silly. I don't necessarily want to buy a next-gen console for a year or two, but I couldn't see myself buying this on a 360 or PS3 when they're about to be obsolete. Guess I may just have to budget for it after building a new PC sometime this year. (Two jobs, yadda, yadda.)

Still, console gamers didn't give a crap about Bungie until they released Halo.
Oh for sure.
I was pretty young at the time of Marathon, etc. And was only a PC gamer at the time, I was playing a shit load of Doom in the "computer room." I KNOW, obviously, that Bungie was a big stinkin' deal and had a huge following, but I think in relative terms it wasn't just console gamers that didn't give a crap about Bungie. You didn't have malls packed to the fucking brim at Midnight waiting on a game until Halo.

Man that sounds good. If Bungie is able to deliver that...

I think they said that it auto-matches your party, without control by you. Sort of like SSX/Journey I guess, it auto-populates with players who play alongside you.

I also imagine they cant spill beans on too many features because they may reveal console capabilities (parties, group chat and so forth).

I like what I see. A cross between Halo and Mass Effect from what I can tell which is really awesome. Can't go wrong with sci-fi. Kind of sad not hearing a PC announcement to go with this.

Hope there are supporting NPCs both important and background, I don't want to be surrounded by grungy marauders the entire time. Halo had always had great NPC/ally chatter.

Did somebody link these here already? Apologize if so. These are from irishfreak

I'm curious as to why they chose to show animated concept art. That sort of thing is usually done as a pitch as opposed to a revealing AFAIK
