Destiny Reveal Thread

I just don't see the point of trashing a game designed to run on higher end PC with a game that will run on a console from 2005.

Well I guess we will have to see what the limitations for the ps3 and 360 are compared to the ps4/xbox next/pc. It may be so much, that you would have to be crazy to want to play it on the prior platforms.

Interesting tidbit from the Polygon article.

Gotta make that always-online DRM count for something.

It really looks like a Halo mod, even if it is only in pre-Alpha.

And why is this bad? Games like Guild Wars, Aion, TERA, WoW have stories and they are MMOs. You can also create your own story, memories from MMOs stick with me LOOOOOOONG after I played them

Well, just speaking personally from my view, I'm not a fan of MMOs at all. I prefer concise and focused story driven experiences, and I'm not sure this will deliver on that front if it is the way they're portraying it to be.

I can't help but feel genuinely disappointed. The ViDoc was hokey. The narration was cheesy, reading the poems from the ARG and the blurb from the preorder material made it sound genuinely epic, and then you have this feeble, shakey old man's voice spouting it back.. thats not heroic. Awful.

I'm not disappointed in the graphics, unlike many here I believe the footage they showed looks significantly better than what the 360 is capable of. People, seriously.. you can't judge a game's graphics from 15seconds of compressed youtube footage. Some journalists who saw the game in person share the same opinion.

I'm frustrated because they didn't explain what the actual experience of playing the game will be like. Sure, WE know that its going to be some crazy MMO-type experience with instances and a hub world and lots of social interaction.. but if I showed this video to my friend he would imagine a 6hour campaign with a multiplayer suite. Which is a huge misstep. They definitely touched on what the true experience will be like, but not enough. Listening to Jeff Gerstmann's video blog he tried to explain it, too. But it was heavily couched with "this is just me speculating, they didn't show us anything." It seems nobody really knows how its gonna be. Which kills me.

Again, I have a good idea of what the actual experience will be like but honestly those were all things we had known from the leaks beforehand. There was no explicit "this is how the average play session will go down." Which is a huge and total bummer. Ugh, I always get way too excited for Bungie shit. I'm not disappointed in the game.. it looks like the coolest thing I've ever seen, I'm just fucking pissed they didn't show more. They had SO MUCH ATTENTION and in my eyes they squandered it. I don't want to go through a years worth of "tune in for the details on the fourth mission type" and "exclusive look at Venus's exotic loot." I just want an explicit explanation and a date to put on my calendar so I can forget about this until its out.

Well, then this game is probably not for you.

Actually the entire video they were talking about their ideas and ambitions. On the IGN stream they said that the point of this was to reveal the setting and the universe, not the game. Bungie should probably have mentioned this beforehand though.

The entire video is just big jerkoff-y bit of nothing meant to placate the easily impressed: Talking about HUGE scope and HUGE ambition while all the details of your game are fairly synchronous with many other games we've got in the past, including a recent Planetside 2, is not going to blow people over immediately... and this is, after all, a first impression.

Maybe there will be better stuff down the line; who knows. I know I'm not interested because I have no interest in playing MMOs. I only played Lord of the Rings online because I love LOTR and I got out of that the second I hit the level cap. But others might love it.

The point I'm making is there is not much to discuss right now, it's pretty self-evident that the reveal was pretty thin on hard details. Not much you can get out of 2 minutes. So, yeah, on top of the fact that visuals ARE actually really important anyway, even if they had a somewhat diminished state of import to some people, it's obviously going to be discussed with a disproportionate level of focus because that is one of the primary things people could get out of this short reveal.

Just missed the reveal and from what I'm reading it didn't live up to its expectations.
A quick summary of things that were mentioned in the reveal would be welcome :D

Just about done listening to Jeff Gerstmann's video about his trip and the Destiny reveal.

I think Bungie could have done a better job describing what Destiny is. The vidoc was half concept discussion, half trailer. I'd have liked to have had a better fleshed out version of either. I'm still very confused about what Destiny is. Sure sounds like an MMO (raids, social cities, dungeons, etc.)

Here's Destiny in a nutshell, Journey+Guild Wars +FPS = Destiny.

I seriously can't believe they didn't show gameplay.

I think people hoping for a trailer during the Sony event are going to be disappointed. It's just not Bungie's way to give us a peak at their world and then immediately drop another one just days later. They want to do things slow, sometimes aggrevatingly so.

I think we might get a namedrop, but a trailer? I highly doubt it.

Player count differences big enough to warrant multiple and radically different versions would have a major impact on the design and balance of the game. Spaces cannot accommodate those kind of player changes without really knowing up front what the player count is.

I think you're massively overestimating the "balance" and "design" aspects here. Consider this for a moment: Battlefield 3 has 32-player MP on consoles, and 64-player MP on PC. There's no cross-play. :P

In case of Destiny, quite possible, given that the "magic" is gained from the Traveller.
In other fiction, rarely so.

Actually just the opposite.

Magic in most fiction is only magic to those who aren't practitioners. To practitioners it is usually treated like any other technology or science.

Which goes along with the statement that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

In most sci-fi games the science isn't hard, so it might as well be magic. It is more an issue of flavor than of purpose.

I would suspect the "magic" in destiny is sufficiently advanced technology.

always-online? playing with people? and no wii-u version? I wouldnt be surprised if this flopped like the star wars mmo.

rip in piece, bungle studio.

Well, then this game is probably not for you.

Might not be.

I'm going to keep an eye on it until we get a lot more details. Bungie was one my favorite developers both this gen and last gen. It just really sucks if my fears are true for Destiny, as this is what they'll be doing for the next 10 years :-/

Imo they are smart to withhold gameplay footage at this moment. In 3 days time stuff will be shown on 10x more powerfull hardware. That won't really work in their favor.

Is this a subscription type mmo? Whats the point of releasing a game like this when this console cycle is almost over? Are they even releasing a next gen version... seems like a waist!

That's not how you do a reveal lol.
It looks like Halo X Guild Wars.
At the end of the day, it will probably just be a Halo-clone but with a persistent game world.
I'll wait for real gameplay footage before judging too much though.
BTW, Activision, I'll never buy any of your DLC bullshit.

PS: There's going to be space dog fights in this right?

So, went to see "Destiny" Didn't see it, was told about it being awesome. Embargo lifts along with pre-orders. I need to take a shower.

Seems like it would be a better launch title for new consoles than stuck in last gen.

EDIT: Never mind, it's on next gen consoles. But seems to pointless to buy it on Xbox 360/PS3.

no, the subscription comes with bungie pro, and will be used for other services not directly related to the game afaik.

the game is going to be releasing on all 4 platforms next year.

Yep. This is pretty much the worst reveal for a game since that guy who made Avatar went up on the E3 stage and told everyone how awesome the Avatar game would be.
