Destiny Reveal Thread

Because the install base for PS360 is multiple times bigger than the install base for DurangOrbis will be.

But, what will the dude bros that see GTAV/Destiny/COD out for systems they already have think about the new ones? They'll most likely hold off a year. Then, what happens in 2014? The big games will only release on the new systems? Or will the publishers again say "We can't ignore the free money thats to made off of the ps360 install base".

That shit will hurt the industry. These guys need to bite the bullet and commit to next gen.

My speculation.

Bungie felt it necessary to show something before the Sony event on Wednesday.

In the video of Geff Gerstmann's impressions, he suggested that it felt something had been canned at the last minute.

Logically it makes sense for two reasons:

- Showing next-generation footage acknowledges their existence (remember folks, they still don't officially exist)
- Showing a lot a current-generation footage days before the PS4 wouldn't make sense, as it would be lost in the noise

Halo 5 vs. Destiny on next gen consoles is going to be very interesting, at this point I'm going to put money on Halo 5. Visual upgrades and player count increases won't change the fact that Destiny looks like a spin-off of Halo, while Halo 5 could improve on original Halo concepts.

juding by halo 4 being worse then every halo before it in every way except visuals, I'm glad bungie jumped ship.

Judging from their work on Halo maps and Halo 4, 343 is not capable of improving on the original Halo concepts.

They seem to be more ambitious than Bungie. Halo 4 is decisive though, so depending on who you talk to Halo 4 is fantastic or somehow ruined the series. I'm in the former.

Ouch lol

Oh fuck this industry. Laughable.

I don't know why anyone would be surprised that it looks worse than Halo 4. Hoping the next-gen version is worth the hype.

But why?

Ice cold! I would probably feel the same. I bet most of the press there were even more frustrated with this reveal then we are.

Funny thing is, it might not have been planed like this. Jeff Gerstman mentions in his video that he talked to some Bungie folks during a break and the conversation went something like this:

Bungie employee: "So what do you think?"
Jeff: "The concept art is really cool, and sounds really ambitious. Would have liked to see the game."
Bungie employee: "Wait, they are not showing you the game?"

I've always fantasized about a game that is driven by the players' participation. One where the story goes X way or Y way because you and your friends were there to make it happen. Unlike a linear narrative defined by the developer, what happens next only happens because you and your clan fought that battle. In other words, a real-time dynamic RPG.

So you can guess that I'm ecstatic seeing it finally come to life, and from Bungie no less. I don't have any doubts that I'm going to enjoy it, but I do hope their next reveals are more content rich and less teasing. At this point, my only criticism from what I've seen is that it appears Bungie is still grounded in their Halo past. There are very obvious similarities (especially with weapons), so I hope to see a more distinct separation from the two as we go along.

Are we really going to get to fly through the Solar System to other planets?

We already had that, since 2003. It's called EVE Online.

I like the idea of Destiny and have faith in Bungie but I have to agree with this reveal being kind of meh. I want to see some of the game in action instead of a vidoc. Hell, a CGI trailer would've been better than what we got today.

Same here.

so ???

it's a persistent online game, what did you expect ???

Well I expected a game that gives you most of the content with initial cost and a few unlockables with just a few extras you can pay for but are not neccessary.

The feeling I'm getting is that you need to pay for different chapters of the game, different weapons and upgrades. Lot's of Dlc, locked content, etc.

I love what I've played of Halo 4 (admittedly, not finished it) but it never struck me as remotely ambitious.
The multiplayer in fact felt the exact opposite.

Might be mistake to release the game on soon-to-be legacy systems as that kind of sets limitations as a lowest common denominator on what they can push in terms of gameplay/systems/scale/networking etc.

IP's designed to take full advantage of next-gen systems have the advantage of being free of current-gen memory/processing limitations dragging down the ambition of the game.

This is exactly what I am afraid of.

My bet is that they didn't want gamers to link the product specifically with the PS4. This way they remind everyone that there are 360 and PS3 versions of the game. Then they can be a small part of the PS4 unveiling on Weds, the Durango unveiling in Spring, then have hands on demos of next/current gen versions of the game at E3.

Did it bother anyone else that they just chose a different arachnid for the tanks?

Scorpion Tank ---> Spider Tank

Try a different direction, Bungie!

How about some gameplay?

So the question is, why they felt it was necessary at the risk of looking half assed? Maybe MS pressured them somehow?

I can't help but feel this announcement was a bit too premature. Almost like Bungie didn't really want to reveal at this stage in development.

Hm. I was excited after watching the ViDoc but coming here really deflated my mood. Ah well. Here's to hopefully having a PC release?

Bungie fucked up by hyping this thing up like it was going to be a huge blowout, if they'd indicated it was 'A first glimpse into the Universe we're creating' or something I think that would have been just fine.

Reading Destructoid preview it sounds we won't see the game until late 2014...a major current gen release on late 2014?

Next gen versions better be something special.

The concept does look sounds ambitious but right now is just a lot of promises, artworks that looks good and underwhelming in-game footage.

My general impression was that Bungie was planning on showing more but the PlayStation Meeting took them by surprise and they were told to withhold information for the event. I know from reading Jeff's Tumblr that the Bungie event was in the works before the PS Meeting was announced.

Ubisoft and LucasArts didn't seem to have problems showing off Watch Dogs/ SW1313.

I agree. I understand they wanted to do something new, but this project seems like the antithesis of what I normally play.

Yeah. I can't say I'm excited about this.

I hear about their plans for this 'shared world' and it reminds me of the huge DLC plans they have (according to the leaked contracts) including allusions to micro-transaction and virtual currency.

It's just a huge turn-off.

It's early, so we'll see.

The multiplayer in fact felt the exact opposite.

I'd say the biggest strides were towards the concept of Spartan Ops and changing up the multiplayer formula drastically.

The most valid complaints about Halo 4 are the technical ones, I can't join a spartan ops game online without a shit ton of lag for example, some things definitely have to be fixed.

So the question is, why they felt it was necessary at the risk of looking half assed? Maybe MS pressured them somehow?

Definitely possible.

We've all seen the contract, and Jeff Gerstmann said someone from Bungie confirmed it's validity (although it had been amended).

If Destiny is to be shown at the Sony event, it would make perfect sense to reveal it beforehand to appease Microsoft.

Ubisoft and LucasArts didn't seem to have problems showing off Watch Dogs/ SW1313.

This is Bungie, there is a lot of history.
