Destiny Reveal Thread

Just saw a Destiny banner ad on GAF. Already they're advertising?

The budget of this game, between development costs and marketing, is going to be astronomical. I really hope they can pull it off.

I cant believe they flew games jounos from all over just for that.

I hope something got pulled last minute and we will see a actual trailer at the PS4 event or something.

Eh, Activision is the publisher. I'm sure they have more than enough, haha.

So, everyone in the future wears masks? This isn't Halo anymore, Bungie. Feel free to let us have an actual face.
Video games about dystopian futures with hovering alien spheres and people want to see human faces.

Cool masks and helmets all day, everyday.

For me the most interesting aspect of this game is the "10 years" they keep throwing around, It's mentioned in the video a few times.

I know that the agreement with Bungie and Activision is a 10 year partnership, But why is it 10 damn years.

Who ever releases or teases a game and mentions the amount of years you will be playing for? No one does which makes me wonder what it is exactly that Bungie really want to try and do with this game.

If someone said WoW would last 10 years back in 2004 we all would have laughed. Hell it's going to be on it's 9th year this year.

So i'm wondering if the game will be some sort of universe that constantly changes based on player choices and input. That it won't simply be about killing a boss with a few buds to find more loot. If I jump in at the 8 year mark to see what all the fuss is about then i've missed out on 8 years of back and forth universe changing events that impact me as a player.

If they pull that off then it could be something very interesting.

Compared to the few seconds of in-engine clips the amount of animated concept art was substantial. It's gorgeous, but I can't think of any other game reveal of this magnitude relying on concept art in a similar way.

I would classify this as an initial reveal long before I'd call it the main reveal.

Why go completely silent for two years and some change only to break said silence with a whimper?

The whole thing, including flying journalists out to Washington to give them a powerpoint presentation, seems like something of a misplay on Bungie's part.

I'm tempted to agree with Jeff Gerstmann's suspicion that maybe something was held back at the last minute.

Catastrophic game engine crash on presentation day? Go to Plan B with animated art and powerpoint?

Perhaps Bungie are just cornered from the recent leaks timing combined with biting off more than they can chew ;)
I love them for that reason alone

Agreed. I don't need to see short-haired Caucasian man #64. I like my helmets as it makes it more mysterious and fucks with my perception even if he's human.

I can foresee this happening this game will be a launch game for both systems. I pre ordered the xbox 360 but once its announced for next gen I will be pre ordering it for that system.

Still wonder how the planning of this game went:

Bungie1:We just released odst and reach, need something new
Bungie2: needs more firefight
Bungie1: no lets move away from it
Bungie2: F I R E F I G H T
Bungie1: no even there single player was baised around it, need something new
Bungie2: How about a phantasy star online style game... were every dungeon is a firefight
Bungie1: stuff it, lets call it destiny

Debunked at step one? Ouch.

Just catching up with the reveal stuff. My thoughts:

- Whoa nelly filters... Whoever said "instagram planet" was spot on. way too much filter on all the gameplay stuff they showed. I get that is adds a bit of grit to the atmosphere but it looks dated. Same goes for the lighting bloom.

- Gameplay idea sounds fun. I like the idea that this might be more RPG than traditional FPS. I'd love for this to be a skyrim like open world. Not sure if I'm out to lunch on that one though.

- Universe sounds engaging. Good variety of enemies from the looks of it with the ability to expand. Should help solve the attachment to elites that we all felt in the halo series.

- I will only buy this game on next gen. I really can't imagine buying this game with an emphasis on expanse unless it was done right with some proper horsepower. I'm pretty sure I won't be buying anything else for my 360 at all actually.

- Eagerly awaiting some real details. My mind would be blown if this was featured at the Sony meeting.

Oh dear, I've missed a lot. Time to start digging through the thread.

What's been the general consensus on GAF outside of PC players turning hype into venom when they realized their platform wouldn't get the game?

Legitimately, they overhyped what was a conceptual reveal. Bungie/Activision are looking to sell the shit out of a game that's so ambitious by selling it on their commitment and ititial ideas. Bungie/Acti deserves some flack for super hyping the reveal, then going very broad and general.

It comes down to this, if you believe that bungie can pull off what they are saying they'll do, then you'll be excited. If you don't, then this whole thing was an effort in chicanery and bullshit.

I'm cautiously optimistic honestly, I believe bungie can nail this, but I also see about a hundred little ways to fail and ruin the whole thing.

Ohh, and if you want to be insulted there's some of that too :\.

Woah hang on, this really isnt coming out this year? Development Hell looks like its struck for sure. 2014, on a 9 year old console? Good lord! They'd better have both PS4 and 720 versions with orders of magnitude better visuals in place ready to go at the same time. Cross platform multi as well (at least between both Sony consoles aka PS3+PS4 server and a 360+720 server) so as to not split a multiplayer population all around.

It's cross-gen and you really don't want to ignore an established userbase. I don't see why that's so surprising.

Nobody knows for sure yet. A lot of the press there think not because Bungie didn't blow it out like they thought they would. Personally I think they're just holding back. Either way it will release when it's done and I'm ok with that.

characters look too shadowed in, what is up with their lighting?

always playing games where character look like shadows dark inside while on the map

Obviously the game-play was from the 360. Hopefully we'll see next gen footage at Sony's press conference or maybe even further along in the year at Microsoft's Nextbox conference.

The polygon report said that
"When it's coming out. Activision and Bungie have not announced when Destiny will come to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, or when it will come to next-generation platforms. Activision says it's not factoring Destiny into its financial guidance for 2013. "We'll have announcements about release timing when we're ready," Activision says."

Is that FY2013? If so that means "Not before october this year." If it's calender, then not in 2013.

FWIW, Claude confirmed no Microtransactions was stated at the event over on DBO.

Bungie hasn't revealed anything solid about it yet, but they've hinted that there could be some pretty powerful player creation tools.

A Bungie designer said in one of the vidoc's that after a certain point, the Destiny universe will belong more to players/fans than Bungie itself. That could just be classic Bungie hyperbole, or it could hint at some pretty groundbreaking features.

And yeah, the ten year announcement is kind of strange. In fact I think it's unprecedented. Clearly Activision and Bungie are betting quite a bit on this new franchise.

As for the WoW thing, I do vaguely remember a quote from someone at Blizzard claiming that WoW could last 15-20 years. In retrospect he was obviously full of shit, but maybe that seemed plausible while Wow was at the height of its popularity.

Well, the vidoc showed much more animated concept art than actuall in game stuff. Think that's what he means.

Yea, and I don't think that's even that much of an issue.

The bigger problem is, Bungie just promised something huge, and they kind of handwaved how they are doing it on a gameplay level. Lots of cool technical/server based stuff, but the actual gritty mechanics, and in engine stuff got no love.

It's totally okay to both be wowed by the potential, and suspicious of the claims. The fact is, bungie used this event to write a big check, a check far bigger than Halo 2 E3 2003. The last time they promised anything that grand, they fell flat on their faces, and for the halo 2 demo they had gameplay. Great concept art shouldn't be enough to sell anyone on a vision this grand.

I'm rooting for destiny, because it's the kind of game I want to play, and I trust the people making it. Thing is, I'm fully aware things could fall apart.

I will give them the benefit of the doubt. That said I want this on next gen not current...and if it does not hit 720/ps4 day and date with 360/ps3 then I will probably skip it based on that reveal.

not sure if i like. seems to be heavily coop focused which usually weakens story.

Also did I understand this right; they're basically having a 10 year plan for this series? Seems a little premature

This makes no sense to me, Destiny is an entirely different beast than halo.

Is this a strictly visual comparison?

Colors.
Skyboxes.
General Movement.
Sci-fi.

You've got to understand how limited some posters game view is. I'm sure a good chunk of these posts don't even care about shooters in general.
I certainly couldnt critique most other genres without huge generalizations.

For example, JRPGs. I'd probably get banned for my honest opinions on the genre.

I'm willing to guess most of the naysayers flip on this buy the time it comes out. It looks like one of those really deep games where people need to see the whole picture before understanding what makes it so cool.

Yeah, I agree the trailer was very mediocre and pretentious, but it's just a little reveal trailer. Like I said before, Skyrim only got a minute long CG trailer and it released within a year of that announcement, so it had been deep in development as well.

I just think people are overreacting to this thing because everyone is chomping at the bit to see a next-gen game, so they heaped all those expectations and shit on this. I'm not saying I know if this is or isn't the PS4/Nextbox version of the game, but at least give the thing a chance before you freak out about how it looks. You should also realize that this isn't an enclosed single player game either. This looks to be a multiplayer heavy, big open spaces, customization stuff and different styles kind of game like Borderlands.

Just give the thing a chance before you shit talk it, because I'm willing to bet once release day comes, you'll regret all the shit you said.

Isn't this technically the first official release of information surrounding the game? We'e only previously seen leaks or easter eggs and ARGs, right?

I find it interesting that my B.net Speculation Thread from early last year, Bungie's New Game Destiny, was highlighted on the Official Destiny Community website page (1 of 8 community threads highlighted there).

I speculated (in the lower original parts as I updated the thread with general Destiny Info for newcomers to that thread):

1. Multi platform (PS3, xbox, PC later)
2. Multi device (tablets, mobiles)
3. Changing the game experience based on device
4. Cross generation (next gen xbox & PS)
5. Persistent game world
6. Micro transactions
7. Mix of FPS, MMO, RPG, RTS with difference genre-styles on differing devices

When I look over what has been revealed so far I think that thread was highlighted officially by Bungie for 2 reasons;
1) Community participation about Destiny.
2) Accuracy of the speculation and relevancy to the reveal. Looks like approx. 6 of my 7 major speculations were accurate.

In reply to your post I still stand by my speculation that the game world will be ONE single universe across platforms, devices and generations. Bungie like to be the first with new game innovations e.g. CE = FPS console, Halo 2 = XBL online multiplayer, parties, chat, Halo 3 = theatre, console coop.

Development hell indeed.

Debunked at step one? Ouch.

This just reminded me how great Bungie is at easter eggs. I remember looking for easter eggs in Halo 3/Reach for weeks with people on Bungie.net. Knowing that Destiny will be a huge game, I'm eager to discover what awaits me.
