Destiny - Review Thread

Saw these scores coming from a mile away. While I haven't played the full game, I did play the crap outta the beta (mainly the strike) and loved every bit of it. That said, the game was hyped to high heaven and Bungie did not make good on some of its earlier claims of what the game would be like.

Still, I'm very excited to play the full thing. Based on the beta I'd give the game an 8, and nothing I've seen of the full game will make me change that.

But yeah, this game will be quite divisive, just like a few of the other big releases so far this gen.

Are you agreeing or disagreeing with me? I suggested anyone who waited for a review from Pie.com to pat themselves on the back and to confirm their suspicions from seventeen years ago may be insecure.

I might've misinterpreted what you were saying.

If you were asserting that those are good score then I was disagreeing with the notion that those scores should be recognized.

Yea, and that's why they tried their hardest to be associated with the game even though Sony/Activisions deal prevented them from actively advertising it.

Some of these posts in here....

They did? I saw a fragrance ad and that's about it. And I seriously doubt they never had a chance to invest in this like Sony did. I'm sorry I'm offending, I was merely speculating.

Smash 4 could be in a position to blow people away, and take the title at a few major sites. Maybe Shadow of Mordor or Evil Within could prove to be modern classics - and you never know when CoD will suddenly resonate with critics.
Smash looks to be the best fighter in years, I would love for that to win the award.

The AI is good, but the enemies are only allowed to work within the confines of specific areas, so once those areas are learned, it's easy to exploit. I guess it's not necessarily that the "AI is bad", it's that the "enemy location encounter design" is bad where it gives you a small area to engage enemies in and they won't let enemies really deviate too far from that area because it's all instanced for only you within the confines of the overall spawned game world that is supposed to feel like you're playing with others.

AI is great within a small confined area, then it becomes broken as it reaches the boundaries of their allowed engagement area.

You can thank the PS3's 256mb cpu pool for that.

I played TLOU multiplayer for around 20 hours on PS3 and it was fun, but I can't say I could play any longer than that. It's probably just me, I can't play multiplayer games much anymore besides Halo 4 and I don't even like it that much. I need something new and unique on PS4 multiplayerwise.

I agree, it certainly isn't for everyone. Well, idk if Destiny would be a good fit for you then with what you just said, at least with PvP. And I don't know what else is coming in that area outside of Dragon Age co-op and of course Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.

Pages aren't going to click themselves.

Haha!

What if different people like different things and the definitions of "overhyped" and "ok" are subjetive

What if

Crazy thought, isn't it?
I'm not a huge online shooter fan, I never got into Halo, and I wasn't at all hyped for Destiny initially, but the idea of playing a cool new sci-fi game with my friends is overwhelmingly appealing.

Even if a game doesn't deliver 100% on all the fronts it promised (in its opening week no less), it can be enjoyable and successful if it hits the right place at the right time.

there's already less than 7.5s? damn this is a disaster
well the game's selling very well so they're definitely not complaining

Hmm I still don't get hoz people can blindly buy a game without waiting for impressions etc> Seems like many people here are saying its ok but not great... I'll pass this one I guess

Do any of these reviews actually detail what the raiding is like, how it differs from Strikes, etc? Or the gear progression at end-game? Or... anything at end-game?

I feel like playing a game like this for one day and writing a review for it... seems like something you'd do for clicks more than anything else. That first review doesn't even seem to have a max-level character... wtf?

Only ones I could find. NZ Gamer is pretty legit though.

edit: apologies if the thread is a bit premature.

I'm actually glad this thread is up since |OT| is pretty hostile to criticism on the game. It shouldn't be the place to be discussing it and we probably shouldn't be, but there's no one else to and creating a negative thread about Destiny will lead to locks, bans, and a lot of bad blood like back when people were making contrarian threads to the Beta.

And even if these reviews are poorly conceived, they are still reviews and thus allows for the thread's existence.

I'm looking at the thread with like five reviews 7 or higher and seeing people post "glad I skipped this".

A) those are good scores
B) if all you wanted was to bias confirm, why do we need to do that in public? It doesn't really reflect well on people

Your post is the one confirming bias by trying to claim that a group of scores including two scores (of 6 total) in the 7/10 range is "good" given you are obviously aware of the current state of the games media. The average review score for games, especially big budget games, has seen a creeping incline even when players don't necessarily agree. GTA IV getting a 98% is just... strange. Apparently the best game ever in the series? Even for smaller games stuff like Warriors Orochi 3 PS4 ended up with an 81%. As a result it changes player expectations. Now when you see an 81% you are thinking games like Warriors Orochi. When you'see a 90% you're thinking games like Rayman Legends. 95% is a remaster of a well regarded last gen game.

I don't think the thread is premature. Review threads should be started when reviews come out imo.

"But just how big is Destiny? At this point, it's hard to tell. After spending the better part of a day with it, I'd completed around six missions, and progressed to a level six Guardian..."

NZ Gamer sounds about as illegitimate as possible.

That's NZ Herald, not NZ Gamer.

If we can't criticize a game without people flipping out we've truly lost.

Woops my mistake.

Well that's part of it. Borderlands enemies will chase you quite far, so I'm not quite buying that one fully. I think it's a design based on how enemies are spawned in the instanced areas in the game.

But obviously the game being cross-gen holds it back from its potential by MILES, and it's really baffling when people are talking like there shouldn't be sequels and they should continue to support this game through DLC for 10 years. Fuck that, the entire game is compromised by last gen specs.

Saw this coming from the beta.
Bungie tried to sell the game for much more than it actually is also helped by a huge marketing campaign.
But as people started playing it, it has become evident that Destiny is just a sci-fi fps lacking in mission variety, story, contents and overall single player campaign quality.
Still it's not like the game is a disaster, the core shooting mechanics are fun and if you like doing co-ops with your friends it can be a very satisfying experience.

People expected story? I played through some Halo campaigns and they were all pretty forgettable generic stuff. Story has never been Bungie's strong point.

This is what I don't get. Story? I've always seen a "good story" in a videogame a bonus. I just want it to be fun to play.

For me, Destiny is not fun to play. At all. I'm surprised so many think the gunplay is solid. I think that's its weakest link.

I'd assume those that think the gunplay is solid haven't played CoD, Halo or Titanfall?

Won't happen.

Will... not... happen, no matter how good it is.

Unless some indie darling pops up and sweeps people off their feet, or one of the AAA games really outdoes its' tracking - I could honestly see it happening.

It won't be a universal pic like TLOU was last year, but it and MK8 could take home more big prizes than anybody expected them to.

Lol you mean since last November?
Yes, which is... pretty much an entire year. What's the point? It's the biggest shooter I've played in quite some time... and definitely so far this entire generation.

In a single day you've played this game for longer than any other shooter? I don't consider repeating your Alpha progress through the same zones in Beta then repeating those same zones in the retail release to count when comparing to how long you played other games without a beta. You are compelled to play Russia again for a 3rd time because that's the only way to get to the new stuff.
It's been two days actually, and I've already logged 18 hours in the game. (Took Tuesday/today off and went to the midnight release)

I didn't play the Alpha, or the Beta, because they told you that you'd have to repeat it when you buy the game if you do that. It's all been new to me, and plenty of other people I'm sure, considering I'm sure way more people bought the game than played the alpha/beta.

EDIT: I meant, definitely this generation, and I can't remember the last shooter, including last gen, that I put over 18 hours into and had fun the entire time (playing singleplayer and co-op only). Most shooters I've played in the last generation, and all this generation, I've (and the people that log their time in HLTB, seemingly) beat in less than 15 hours.

Fuck that, the entire game is compromised by last gen specs.

More than compromised, this is a ps360 game with an x1/ps4 up-port.

I still think it is great fun, and I'm glad I bought it but without the right level of expectation, I can see how people would find it disappointing.

"Not much content" compared to... Skyrim or something? I'm not sure why I keep seeing this. I've already played Destiny for longer than I've played any other shooter that has released this generation.

edit - Oh, you mean THIS generation which has only had a handful of shooters. Got it.
