Arrogant Bungie, Halo is still going and the further away they are from it the better.

What is the gif supposed to represent?

I'm not here to defend Activision, bungie and the hype machine. I dispised them and that's one reason why I kept my expectations in check and played the beta before deciding to buy it, you can't trust marketing hype.

I don't disagree with all the flaws of the game and I understand why so many are turned off and angry. It's just that I see things like 'bad IA, bad level design, bad encounters' and then I don't agree anymore. If destiny is doing some things right it's the level design and encounters. While I agree they lack the vehicles from halo and the story incentives(I must also say that I like the arcade feel of the game structure) , they are still one of the most epic encounters I ever played and had a lot of fun like I never had in a fps campaign. I don't want to take that away from bungie because aside from all the maeting crcrop and Activision deal, they still know how to design a good fps.

the pve spaces are for the most part well designed, if not slightly repetitive. the main gripe there aside from inconsistent kill boundaries is the lack of an incentive to venture off the beaten path for anything other than randomly spawning loot caches and mats.

the pvp spaces are half and half. some maps are good and others are so far from it that it's a wonder if they were even built for the same game. shoddy sight-lines, inconsistent geometry, laggy doors, an absence of incentives, predictable spawns, etc.

bungie's MO was their clever encounter design moreso than their level design, which has remained the same for over a decade. unfortunately, they lose a lot of that potential with monster closets and static mob spawns.

It's not surprising to see a bunch of "JOE NAILED IT" comments from posters in here, given that Angry Joe is perfect confirmation bias for them. He appeals to the people who actually believe things such as a certain game selling well is "bad for the industry." He appeals to the people like to reduce developers and publishers to cartoon-character, mask-wearing "bad guys." He appeals to the people who have called for individuals to be fired for making an entertainment product they don't like. He appeals to the people who think negative opinions are always more truthful then positive ones, or that positive opinions equal shilling.

He also appeals to people who think wife-beating jokes are HILARIOUS! Look! This guy a page back even thought this was GIF-worthy!

Totally nailed it, guys.

What an embarrassing post

I cannot judge the story yet. It is not finished.

Background story is great. World is great. Enemy story is great.

I cannot believe if someone who create this stunning world come up with this totally trash for main story.

But it happened. 10 hours is plenty of time to tell a story, especially considering the already episodic structure baked in, where each planet is essentially a "season," with both Myth Arc episodes (laurels) and filler. That's a ton of time to introduce stuff like characters. At this point, judging is a pretty fair reaction.

Yeah i read it. I can see where you are coming from and yes, I expected alot to be honest but when you see Bungie saying things like this and this its just hard not to expect alot, infact where is this game they are talking about?

Can you imagine if the marketing was honest? "We are making a game with vanilla WoW RNG loot grind with no story or world building because lead design guy is a vanilla WoW worshipper and the other lead design guy hates stories." Yeah that would have sold a lot.

I find no problem that you love and enjoy the game, heck I enjoy it thanks to the great gameplay but I just can't help but be incredibly disappointed by Bungie, that's all.

I guess it's time to realize Bungie 2014 /= Bungie 2004.

* * *

I do wonder if the OG WoW loot->raid->loot->raid->ad infinitum hooks will get into console FPS players. It is possible because WoW addiction was/is real for 10+ million, and if Destiny could get those kinds of numbers of people pouring hundreds and hundreds of hours into these games in order to get better shoulderpads and gonch, ka-ching.

I have to admit that I never cared for WoW-style games, but I do get the appeal. You get the rush of gambling, a feeling of social status with the right gear, and sense of belonging if you have a group. It is a pretty potent combination for some people, so potent some folks prefer it to real life.

This thread has been worth it as I now have a grasp on what this game's basic design philosophy is, and damn it is interesting albeit unappealing.

So after a lot of back and forth I decided to try my luck and see if I could get a refund for the digital guardian edition I bought for $90 on the XB1. I really feel like I was sucked in by the hype and, would much rather wait for reviews of the two expansions before I buy them (yes yes my fault but Bungie were talking out of their arses with the whole ‘story being actually good’ bit). Much to my surprise MS agreed to the refund. It was for the full amount so I’ve lost access to the game (fair enough) but I plan to pick up a second hand disk based copy on the cheap. If the expansions are good then I’ll consider buying them.

Go ahead gaf, crucify me.

QUICK EDIT: If anyone else is wondering I did everything via their web chat service.

Holy crap, surprised they agreed to that.

Hmm...

If you think the Borderlands loot grind is as bad as the Destiny loot grind, then I don't know what to tell you.

.

They are very different games. BL2 was very much story based, and the extent of loot grind was playing NG and NG+. Borderlands2 had 114 optional side missions, each with their own story, and 19 main missions; each being unique and not just running through the same content. There is a fuck ton of story content in that game, and I believe that is why most players played through the game. Once you finish it (or NG+ for some), there is little reason to keep playing. MMO loot games can be played for thousands of hours on the other hand.

Story based loot games do not have the addictive potential of mmo loot games.

TBH honest so was I, I dropped in the whole bit about BF4 premium being refunded and how I was happy to take a part refund (ie. keep the game and refund to the value of the expansion pack). They could only offer a full refund which I was happy with in the end. I might just buy the game digitally at $60 (I'm in the UK so it will still work out cheaper than going into a bricks and mortar store). I'll basically end up with $30 in my account now with the option of buying the expansions later.

How about you relax, enjoy the mechanics of Destiny and if you get a cool piece of loot then great. Why are some gamers so obsessed with having best loot asap that they willingly ruin their own time to get it?

I have full legendary and exotic. But i never grinded for them it comes from naturally playing the game. I dont get the battered partner thing. If you do your bounties and play some pvp you get your loot regardless of whether it drops or you just buy it.

If you do some repetitive shit the loot will come

Lol.
Screw that. Most of the time im nr1 in pvp yet get no rewards, while the worst player gets a legendary. Ive run all strikes 5x already or more. F off.

Destiny for all intents and purposes is a loot whore game. If your not gunning toward a piece of loot you want then you may lose more than half your reason to play depending on your situation. The loot is the life blood of the game. I don't think people are demanding gear every time they set out to kill something in god knows what. They just want something in return for time spent doing X thing like any other game of this genre does.

Lord knows the Grind:Reward ratio is all kinds of wack in Destiny, never mind the fact the game doesn't really reward skillful play with better loot in most cases. I've seen plenty of people who wind up on the bottom multiple times in PvP and get legendary engrams multiple times within 30-45 minutes tops. Mean while I can score consistently in the top and not get anything for multiple hours. The same result occurs even when I try to mix things up with some PvE.

If your not an MMO post-Everquest gamer you might not want to sell your soul to buy legendary equipment quite like they want you to in game.

I think a big snag for me is the loot is just kind of boring. It all feels too similar and nothing goes too far off the reservation. It feels safe, like they were too worried about breaking PvsP with it. I've been stuck at 24 trying to get to 26 to play the raid, and I'm quickly loosing interest. The game feels like having a job, not why I play things.

This is really is a horrible part of PvP.

Come in number one, yet someone at the bottom gets a Leg.

Fuck that.

Nope im being genuine.

I really like halo 4 and after having to suffer through destiny's story, im glad they are gone for good from halo.

I can't believe how people are calling out Destiny for its story, yet the Halo games have never been memorable in that regard. The single player is normally a 5-6 hour romp that's quickly forgotten, then on to the main course (MP / Co-Op).

Uh... agree to disagree. I actually quite enjoy the Halo stories, but even if they weren't memorable, they'd still be so far beyond Destiny it's not even funny.

I'd like to point out that this was said by Bungie.

Doc-Rivers.gif

Sorry Bungie, but you absolutely failed in achieving anything remotely close to Halo's lore and characters. Destiny is a fun game but the story/characters are nonexistent. Most people who find the characters memorable are NPCs likeCryptarch because he fucks them over with loot.

I really don't think it's "far beyond". They're all forgettable. The only one that was interesting was the first and it was downhill from there.

Glad Destiny largely realizes that the story aspect isn't any good and quickly skips past it.

I hate to continue railing on the game because I really do like it, and I'm having a ton of fun just shooting things, but man, the story is God awful. After playing the whole thing through all I came out the other end with was:

-There is a stranger exo hunter
-The Queen and her brother are playing both sides of a war that no-one had time to explain to me.
-The Vex are a super advanced hive mind that worship a ball of darkness that I killed for some reason.

Please don't tell me to wait for the DLC because... well... I probably won't buy it. There are two forms of DLC that I think are legitimate:

-Optional MP map packs (which I skip)
-Game changing expansions like Reign of Giants for Don't Starve.

If Destiny wants me to pay more just to make the core game make any sense that's fine, but I most likely won't, and I won't give them a pass on the story that I already bought.

But it doesn't though. It forces you to watch through tedious exposition and cutscenes again and again. It's actively bad, which is a much greater sin than being forgettable.

Shit like that, really made me hate the pvp in destiny.
Feels like you can turn on console start match wiggle joystick a bit and watch movie at the side to get loot.

Halo at least had a story and many of the characters levels etc are memorable.

I really like destiny and am having a lot of fun playing it with friends, but the story was a joke and almost non existent. I think they have a good ground work though for future games and am still having fun with this one, certainly got my moneys worth. Just wish they had more pvp maps and more strikes.

While Halo doesn't have a fantstic story (though well told and enjoyable) it's miles better than the tacked on shit Destiny has, I really can't see how this can be disputed. I was able to complete the main story line without completing all the story missions, doesn't say much for the missions I missed out, most likely just another defend ghost while he alerts the fallon/hive/vex/cabal. Also I didn't realise I had completed it till I got the end cutscene.

Also if the awoken
are such arseholes how come no one bats an eyelid while they dance around the tower
?

EDIT: Nevermind, went to destinypedia and read up on them...
I had no idea they were human decendents
.

It isn't a question of quality. Destiny's story barely exists.

I dont think you get kicked for doing nothing so this is prob the best way, if I had a vita I could do this while watching tv or something.

At least Halo had a story and not just random exposition from Ghost and Speaker. A few lines from Cortana had 10000x more charm and wit than anything in Destiny.

The only thing with the loot system that I don't like is that bosses don't drop anything significant. It just feels off somehow.

Other than that I haven't spent one second on farming for legendaries and I have a full set now, with one exotic helmet and one exotic weapon. It took some effort to get to 25, but it didn't include any dull activities really. I just played the game like before.

It surprises me that so many people don't know how easy it is to actually buy legendaries. I have both the Vanguard and Dead Orbit rank up so I have a lot to choose from. Many loot games don't offer that possibility at all so make sure to make use of it.

Boses not dropping loot is probably the most irritating thing to most gamers. In games like these and MMO's and the like, when you work your ass off fighting an aggressive foe and you finally prevail, there should be an award or something that makes the player feel that they accomplished something.

I am not sure how hard it would be for them to patch something like this into the game, but if I were Bungie I would look into it.

Seriously, did this guy even play Halo? Everything Cortana said was great, Fucking Johnson with "Jackels in the Courtyard!". Finding out that the Halo ring is a
doomsday weapon just to exterminate the flood
. I'd like to see anyone give one memorable moment from Destiny's story.

Except " I don't have time to explain why I don't have time to explain".

It's because Frankie didn't stay with Bungie, right?

That's memorable alright, just... not for the right reasons :P

Man I remember finding that out in Halo, and thats what, 13 years ago?

The story was simple but well told, I don't remember anything from Destiny.

4 factions + humans + Darkness wtf is going on

I mean how hard is it to put a coherent story in a game? Even iOS games like Modern Combat from Gameloft have better realized stories.

And they took out the "Wizard came from the Moon" line cuz it became such a joke.

Halo games have certainly been memorable in that regard. Many people, including myself, care about the story and the characters, otherwise you wouldn't see such an outpour of criticism after the tonal changes that Halo 4 has introduced. It's not some highbrow stuff, but Halo games have perfectly good stories for their military space opera genre.

At least with Cortana, she would have time to explain why she doesn't have time to explain

Right. How hard would it have been for her to say, "I'd love to explain what's going on, but The Vex are gathering in unprecedented numbers at the Black Garden and I need you to talk to the Queen. She can tell you how to open the portal... I would do it, but, well, um, the Queen and I have some history..."

She's too cool to tell you anything. Too cool.

I remember far more from Halo campaigns that I've played once, years ago (even Halo Wars), more than I can recall stuff from Destiny that I completed days ago.

Halo is so far beyond Destiny storywise, that it just comes off as trollish to put them in the same bracket.

Also Destiny won't let you skip the story when running the stages for the 600th time.. I'm not seeing how that's any improvement on Halo tbh.

I'm really bummed Bungie hasn't even talked about the lackuster story since the game launched.

Nothing.

Didn't one of them make a comparison to the original Metroid? Or was that somebody else?

guysy, this is the review thread, plot analysis in the OT plz. Really hard to shift through all this hatoraid :D

It's kind of the "discuss criticism of Destiny" thread at this point, since that sort of thing tends to get labeled as... well... hate in the OP.

Or here, apparently.
